"I'm a Man" by Chicago is definitely their version of the same song by Spencer Davis. The original Spencer Davis version is definitely worth checking out--it is one of my all time favorite songs. There is also a really nice live version of the song available on KZfaq as well.

Yes, Winwood was in Traffic and Blind Faith. You'd need a rock genealogy to keep all the people and groups straight. Amazing that Steve wrote this at 17 and in such a short time. Guess some people have that musical gift! This was a big hit back in the 60s and it still holds up some 50 plus years later. That was a nice tribute you wrote to Davis!

The Bill Wyman that was mentioned in that Wikipedia article eventually became the bass player in The Rolling Stones. Steve Winwood was 17/18 at the time of this video. It was just Steve that left Spencer Davis to form Traffic.

The group invented and were the first to use the fuzz box on guitar. It was a novelty at the time and gave them them first big hit, 'Keep On Running' which made number 1 in the UK in December '65. I bought one at the age of 65 and still enjoy re-creating the sound - when my wife is out.

Back in '68 I used to go to club in Glendale California called the Odd House and they had a live band called the Plague who did great covers and this was one of their best

Steve Winwood was a musical prodigy as vocalist ( sounding like Ray Charles at 16- there’s video! ) and pianist and guitarist. He wrote “ I’m A Man”. Also was the founder of Traffic ( tons of hits- Dear Mr Fantasy; Cant Find My Way Home; ) and supergroup Blind Faith. Jimmy Paige considered having Steve as his lead singer for Led Zeppelin! He’s had an amazing solo career as well. Check him out on YT at his old country estate in England singing and playing his guitar sitting by a huge stone fireplace. The voice is unchanged!

Google Skiffle ! Jimmy Page got his start in a Skiffle band. They were all over Britain in the late fifties. Basically, a couple of guitar chords.....a washboard...a bass made with a washtub and a broom handle.....American influenced music....it’s a hoot. check it out. There is a short clip of Jimmy Page at 14 being interviewed on British TV with his skiffle band......He said his dream then was to cure cancer. His future held something very different....

Steve Winwood has an incredible voice, and the two solo hits you mentioned, "Roll With It" and "Higher Love", were in constant rotation on the radio in the '80s. This song was also covered by The Blues Brothers, including in their self-titled movie (which you should watch, if you haven't, it's huge fun and packed with great music), which caused some blues snobs to complain that the Spencer Davis Group couldn't be blues, they were BRITISH. Daniel you should consider some type of standard format for honoring these folks and as you must realize many of these classic Rockers are in their 70s and 80s if they're still with us and unfortunately over the next few years you're going to have a lot of tributes

Old grandpa here, who remembers Spencer Davis, and this song in particular, very well. I was in the US Air Force stationed in High Wycombe, England from 1966 until 1969. When this song came on at the Airmen’s Club ( 3 Quonset huts merged together), even the field mice and roaches would get out on the dance floor. The other song that got the same response was “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, by Dusty Springfield. That was when Radio Free Caroline broadcasted from a boat just outside British territorial waters to avoid licensing restrictions. I won’t bore you further, but that’s a bit of musical history you may find interesting. Thanks for doing the oldies.

Try Georgia On My Mind which I think is from the same concert as this. His Hammond playing is phenomenal. But you should also check out their live version of Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out which has a 16 year old Steve Winwood playing piano and sounding like Ray Charles. Both of these are very jazzy which I love but might not be to everyone's taste.

Winwood had a solo career later on, he was also in Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, before Traffic. Winwood is singing and playing the organ on this. He can play a bunch of instruments but is famous for the hammon organ. He is his 70’s now. You should his old blind Faith song can’t find my way back home the acoustic version, it’s on KZfaq.

I have a fond memory of meeting the band in '66 (IIRC), just as their first single Keep on Running was starting to shoot up the UK charts. They were a little surprised to find two 13 year olds waiting to get their autographs when they rocked up in their old battered van to our local Blues Club that we were too young to attend... Spencer and Muff in particular were incredibly sweet to us, inviting us in to watch while they set up for the show. Stevie (as he was then known) was all of 17 and seemed to be hanging back and scowling at us disapprovingly, but I did read later that he was very shy, so perhaps that was it. Muff (bass player and Stevie's big brother) told us a funny story about how their Mum said Stevie should go with him and the band out on the road because 'it would keep him out of trouble'! (Maybe the first and last time someone's parents thought being in a rock & roll /R&B group would keep their teenager on the straight and narrow...) :-D Spencer tried hard to persuade management to let us stay for the show but to no avail. Still, his thoughtfulness touched us and now, 50 years or so later, the news of his death last week has me feeling unexpectedly emotional. RIP Spencer Davis and thank you for all the great music and for your kindness to 2 young fans all those years ago...

another really influential band of the time was The John Mayall's Bluesbreakers who introduced such band members as Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce (later of Cream), Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie (who would form Fleetwood Mac), Mick Taylor (the Rolling Stones) and Aynsley Dunbar (Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention)

Hardcore Beatle fans may know that Spencer was on the Magical Mystery Tour bus in their movie. He didn't do anything or have any lines. But you may see him in the background in a few scenes.

Steve Winwood appeared in concert at The Spectrum in the 80s. The band stayed at The Cherry Hill Inn here in NJ (Across the river from Philly). My brother in law was a cook in the restaurant. Came out to say hello to Winwood and told him the meal was on the house (Typical: Giving a free meal to a millionaire who can afford to pay!). He said Winwood couldn't have been bothered, not the friendliest celebrity to stay there. The music he was putting out at the time was pretty good and worth reacting to.

I saw Spencer Davis Group live two weeks after Steve Winwood left the group. Though we were disappointed, the show was still pretty good. SDG had a number of now forgotten hits that did not feature Stevie. These songs charted in England and internationally but were not big in the US.

The live version is good but the studio version has great backup singers. Some of Winwood's later solo work like Arc Of A Diver (my favorite). You should check out When You See A Chance. The beginning of that song is like a beautiful sunrise.

I had the good fortune to see Spencer Davis perform live a few years ago on a show that featured the reformed versions of The Yardbirds and The Zombies. It was one of the best evenings of music of my life. It turns out, Spencer Davis was a really good lead singer on his own, but if you have Steve Winwood in your band like he was in the 60s, there's no real sense in having anybody else sing. Thank you so much for doing a tribute to him, he was a fine musician.
