Should have kept that 'Political Sticker' issue raw in Mylar along with the Date Stamped VAMPIRELLA #1 and displayed side by side in your PC. They were special on their own with those "Historical Anomalies". Now some backroom "expert" has put a monetary value on them detracting from their Historical value.

Before you said it I thought the 8.0 looked like the 6.0 also when you showed the back cover. It does look slightly darker so you're not crazy.

Action Comics #340. I bought that off the rack (revealing my age perhaps). Thought the origin panel of the guy (forget his name) getting blasted was cool. I was not happy they changed his look later. I think the parasite in this form could look good on the screen.

Some important info for you concerning STAR TREK #1 from Gold Key. Both issues you presented are the more valuable editions (and rarer). That's because both have the Capt. Kirk pin-up on the back cover. The other version (which is more common) just has a regular ad. The Kirk pin-up edition is worth almost twice as much (!).
@AutomaticComics

That’s issue 2 I believe that has the variant back cover. All issue 1s have the photo back cover.

The Economy tier at CGC is for books with values at or below $400 in value. Certainly, some of your books are worth more than $400. In the past, I would submit books which may be worth 20% above market value and had no issues with CGC. However, for my most recent submission, CGC came back to me with an additional charge of $60 for 2 books which they felt had exceeded the $400 threshold. My guess is that the Private Equity firm that acquired CGC, noticed that CGC was not being very rigorous in checking market value of submissions and CGC has now implemented a special value screen at CGC. What guideline do you follow regarding the maximum market value of a book that you would submit for the Economy tier?
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics Жыл бұрын
I’ll submit a book usually up to about $1000 in economy. What if I’m off on my grading? What if I miss restoration? What if they damage a book? For example, when I sent in an FF66 that should have got a 8.5 but they damaged it and it got a 6.0. I would have paid a higher fee for nothing. Double the pain for their negligence. I’ve never had an upcharge. I figure if they want to upcharge me, that’s fine, but I’m not going to volunteer to give them more money.

Yeah, this recent tanning change has been frustrating to say the least.
@actionic135
@actionic135 Жыл бұрын
According to their new grading book, "very light tanning is allowable in the highest grades, particularly for Golden Age comics. Moderate tanning may lower a grade to the 8.0 to 9.0 range." Heavy tanning brings it down to the 6.0 range, and extreme tanning along with brittleness brings it down to between 4.0 and 5.0. Maybe the graders should read their own book! P.S., Dells in the 50s/60s are graded less harshly for tanning due to the type of paper used, leading to a higher occurrence.
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics Жыл бұрын
That is definitely not what I have seen, so I would say their grading book is incorrect. Also why I don’t bother with that book, I’ll go by what I actually see them do. Yes, you can have light tanning in high grades, but moderate tanning from my experience is capping at around a 6.5.

Just a new data point for you: I submitted 20 golden age books to CGC and shipped them on 11/10/22. I used the economy service with no pressing. I got the books back yesterday (12/6/22), so the books took less than 30 days including shipping both ways.

I wonder if tanning is subjective. One would think that could be subjected to some computer analysis to determine. At least to be consistent. However, I could see how paper stock may affect what the base "white" might be (if I'm not being confusing here). Are you sure the tanning comment may not be related to interior rather than exterior tanning? Once encapsulated, kind of hard to see what it was unless you made note yourself or took pictures before sending in. Or do you know the tanning comment is for the exterior only?

Looks like CGC wants people "lighten" their books through the BLED process. This will force more CPR's going forward which makes them more mone. Cant think of any other reason to now grade tanning to agressively.

Could I get your opinion on something? I have a very nice copy of ASM #40 (say 8.0 or better apparent) however it has a tiny piece of tape on the inside cover holding a bottom corner on. About the size of the crease on the Doctor Strange in your video. This tape is so small I think either Reed Richards or Tony Stark applied it. If you were to submit this book, given your experience would you leave it as is or take the tiny corner off. Thanks Ryan appreciate your sharing and entertainment in the hobby.

Do you think the grading is consistent enough that sending in a test book gives you a result you can count on for future submissions? If the combination of flaws are unique enough that you have to test your assumptions then each grader may look at them differently too. Will you be checking out CGC's recent book on their grading guidelines? It would be a great video series to have you review that book in sections with your insight and compare to your experience.

I’m honestly not interested in their grading book. I’ve got things figured out well enough on my own. I just point out when I see deviations from what I have typically seen from them (like in this case).
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics Жыл бұрын
But yes, on average I do think their grading is very consistent. It’s why I can predict the grade within a half point about 90% of the time. Most of the time when I’m off by more than that it’s just a book that cleaned up better than I was anticipating. Or, like in my last video, they damaged the book in grading.

Is the the lower graded book a newer book and the the 8.0 an older book you think they might be grading the tanning because of the age just a thought I really like Captain Marvel number 27 I have a signed copy starlin it's funny about the doctor strange I'm collecting Doctor Strange sorcerer Supreme I think they're a bargain I can't believe how cheap they're going for in the grades I don't think I'll ever end up with all 90 books but I've got quite a few hopefully the next movie will bump them back up laugh out loud

Question: If the that piece was gone on the front cover of that Strange Tales instead of the back, would the grade be different? I think it might.
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics Жыл бұрын
Yes I think it would. I had someone else ask a similar question because they had a book missing a piece like that from the front that they wanted to get graded. Usually front cover damage impacts the grade more. I would expect likely a 3.0. Maybe a 3.5 if it was on the front

When you use the comic book presser do you pay more for pressing and grading vs using CGC to press does that work? Also, what would you say the first silver age Joker appearance is
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics Жыл бұрын
I honestly don’t even look at CGCs prices for pressing. The general consensus is that they do a pretty horrible job and are extremely slow. So it wouldn’t even matter to me what they charge, I wouldn’t use them. I know there is some question around what the first silver age joker is, but it’s not a book I really even consider a “key” like with the other ones. Reason being that he constantly appears in Batman so there’s no real gap between the golden and silver ages for him.
@vobgreat
@vobgreat Жыл бұрын
For Silver age what tier do you use. And do you think sending in Batman 181 that is missing the poster but otherwise would probably be 7.5 or 8 worth sending in or keep raw?
@AutomaticComics
@AutomaticComics Жыл бұрын
I use whatever tier makes sense based on the value. Silver could be anything but the modern tier. And yes, that would be worth getting graded if you think it’s that nice. It’ll just get a green label.

Ryan, I’m so glad you showed The Strange Tales book with that flaw on the back because I have a similar comic (Batman 251) with the same exact flaw, except on the front right cover. It has a chunk missing with a few of the interior pages as well. I wanted to send it in to have it graded but was worried it would be hit really hard and not worth the cost of grading. The rest of the book is in really great shape with no major dings or ticks. I definitely feel more confident now sending it off to CGC. Great unboxing BTW 😃

Regarding the 1st Parasite and 1st Teen Titans...could it be that CGC treats light/moderate tanning the same way they treat brittle pages where if there's a small spot in the book that has moderate tanning the book gets graded as if it's entirely moderate tanning?
