Mother Talzin did use dark side magic to bring Maul back. Pain and suffering fuel dark side users but Maul suffered so much mental and physical pain that it broke his mind. So in a way Mother Talzin enhanced Maul when she gave him his memories back and brought him back to sanity. He was then able to use a level of suffering that would mentally destroy most force users, to fuel his dark side abilities without it destroying himself.

Got to hand it to Obi-wan he basically chopped 2 Sith Lords in half

2 Questions: Why didn't Mother Talzin use the same spell that made Savage Opress so powerful on Maul as well to help compensate for his lost force potential? & Why does Mother Talzin not join Maul & Savage in their rise to power... as well as resolve the relationship between Ventress & Savage? Imagine Maul, Talzin, Ventress & Savage working/training together, they would've become such a bigger threat to Sidious, Dooku, Grievous and the Jedi.

I do enjoy the fact that Maul was an honorable Sith, even though Sith by nature aren’t suppose to be honor-bound like Mandalorians. His nature as a Zabrak warrior combined with being a Sith Assassin makes not only very dangerous yet rather honorful even going so far to acknowledge Plo Koon as being the best duelist he’s ever seen from the Jedi in his eyes.

In Phantom Menace Maul was ferocious yet graceful, I imagine losing his legs would've taken away some of Maul's agility and fluidity.

My own "headcanon" explanation is that Mother Talzin's incredibly obscure, powerful magics restored his power to that of his full original potential, or something very close. Through ritual magic, the Nightsisters were able to make Savage Oppress much more powerful in the Force. I think Mother Talzin did something very similar for Maul.

I’d say it’s kinda like that lords of the sith quote about vader saying that although he was broken his spirit in the darkside had been perfected and he was stronger than ever, this also seems to apply to maul, and I’d say he was already dooku level in clone wars, so I think he would definitely rival or be better than palpatine in his full potential

I think that even in novelization of phantom menace or in Plaguies comic palpatine stated that he took maul in cause before the slice he very well COULD BE a new lord of the sith, that if maul was fully trained and achieved his potential he would be more powerful than sidious but of course that didn't happen

The thumbnail is awesome! I think darth maul biggest weakness was specializing in juyo, in some of his fights you can clearly see that his emotions get the better of him and this made him weak, if he would have used his mastery of niman more and maybe ataru or makashi as a second form he would have been way more efficient.

What about weaker force sensitives? Say someone like Kenobi who had a relatively low midiclorian count suffered the same injuries Maul did and somehow survive, would it cut him off from the force entirely?

There still is no evidence that losing a limb causes one to lose force potential. That is a fan theory that has been built up until people forget "it is all a lie". Lucas only stated that Anakin's injuries cut his potential in half. There are 2 major theories that came from this... 1) the one listed in this video, 2) that it is the lose of the limbs themselves that is the problem. Some task require the channeling of the force through your limbs. Anakin lost 3 of 4 of his limbs... his arm/hand being a very crucial loss. If The latter is the case... we may have seen a Maul that was close to his potential. He may have lost mobility and jumping capability, and maintained abilities Anakin lost with upper body. It would also explain Mauls ability to be so fierce in the clone wars. In the Clone Wars, Maul's handicap is not his potential, it is his failure to grow as an individual. That is what allowed Obi-Wan to surpass Maul. You may be looking at the wrong problem.

I absolutely love Maul's story and his character throughout Star Wars, bringing him back really helped make his character become one of the best in the series and my personal favorite. However, in my opinion, one thing I don't like is that I feel like the person/people in charge of bringing Maul back made his overconfidence into his personality. We see when he is fighting Qui-Gonn, a Jedi master, that he is more focused in battle; even when he begins to fight a padawan Obi-wan, after defeating and killing Qui-Gonn, he is still focused within the battle and not being arrogant. It is only when Maul ultimately defeats Obi-wan in lightsaber combat, and has him at his mercy, that Maul begins to taunt and show "overconfidence" as lots of Sith tend to do. Examples of this "overconfidence" is when Dooku would mock Anakin in their duels throughout the clone wars to try and get him to turn to the dark side, and even Sidious would show some type of arrogance/overconfidence when he fought Yoda. I feel like the people in charge of bringing Maul's character back took that one moment of Maul being overconfident/arrogant and made it become a big part of his character. I like aspects of it, but it really sullied Maul when it comes to him being a fighter. A lot of people say he is overrated as a fighter, and that comes from him losing a lot of his fights due to him now showing more arrogance and overconfidence; which I understand is for a good majority of plot purposes for certain characters to progress to later events. What some people don't understand is that Maul was bred to be a warrior with the ability to tap into the dark side of the force, especially having more physical potential as a Zabrak male. People need to give him more credit as a fighter. In my opinion, after mother Talzin restores Maul back into a more conscious state, he would have used that experience of defeat to learn to finish things before the tables are turned on him. Again, I understand that a big reason for this is due to the plot and progression of the story, but I like to think that, even though mother Talzin helped restore Maul's mind, some parts of his mind were still broken/corrupted because of the dark side of the force and how it consumed him when he tried to stay alive after being cut in half. I agree that his potential was greatly diminished after Obi-Wan defeated him on Tatooine and that he could've rivaled a lot of the stronger force users in Star Wars.

I think given the go ahead by Sidious to use the force in "Lockdown" we would have seen his true power.

in my opinion the concept of midichlorian count introduced more problems than it solved. An individual's count was on a per-cell basis. Naturally, that means losing limbs will reduce your overall Force potential, but it also means you can increase total Force potential by body building. It also means characters like Yoda, despite having a high MC count, had far less total Force potential than someone like Dooku. Except we know that wasn't the case. Furthermore, this also means it would've been better to regrow/clone lost limbs using your own cells and DNA than to get an artificial one. George Lucas didn't need to retcon a reason for why post-Mustafar Vader was 80% as powerful as Sidious. It would've been sufficient to say his injuries and suit both severely limited him.

As the 2 never actually meet in combat it is unclear whether the Maul with Cybernetic legs would actually be unable to defeat Dooku but it would probably be safe to say based on the idea of midichlorians a completely whole Maul would vastly exceed Count Dookus powers by the time of the clone wars and would indeed be on the level of Anakin Skywalker and Mace Windu. Palpatine certainly would have thought twice about going to Mandalore to face this Maul and his brother Savage.

Debates like this always make me wonder in how far cybernetics actually hinder Force users or whether or not it is rather their mind set. I faintly remember reading somewhere once that Sidious for example believed that it wasn't Vaders cybernetics which crippled his potential but his own self-loathing and his inner turmoil. Likewise with the comic where the Force itself speaks to Grievous and tells him how he has crippled himself. One could interpret this as the Force chastising him for cutting off what actually connected him to the Living Force, his flesh with the Midichlorians. But we also know how much he had grown to loath and hate the Jedi and their usage of the Force. That's certainly not a mindset which would be helpful with accessing it, not to mention his probably rather low Force potential to begin with. Now with Maul for example, he may have lost half his body and with that half of his Midichlorians, but after his return actually seems to be stronger and to have gained a deeper connection for the Dark Side. Same for Darth Malgus, who later on in his life had suffered several injuries which basically rendered him unable to live without cybernetics, yet he only seemed to grow stronger, probably also due to his suffering. Admittedly the whole topic of the Midichlorians makes these debates even more complicated than needed, but there are some examples, especially amongst the Sith, who became more machine than man and were still incredibly powerful, maybe even more so than before their transformation. Naturally they'd have to deal with the limitations their new limbs brought, like Vader and the dangers of using Force Lightning for him. But considering what Sith Alchemy could do, I think even that may have been something that could be remedied.

I was surprised in Rebels, when Mail meets Kenobi, he teased from the force (and sound logic) that kenobi was guarding something, not hiding, on tatooine.

Before The Phantom Menace and during The Phantom Menace; Maul was capable of going toe to toe and defeating Jedi council members. Qui Gon Jinn was a highly accomplished duelist and even though Ataru had glaring weaknesses in the Naboo reactor, Qui Gon Jinn was heavily taxed by their brief encounter on the flat open space on Tatooine earlier on. This might seem radical but I believe that Maul's lightsaber duel capability at the time of episode 1 was sufficient enough to defeat and kill Yoda himself. It is also my belief that Palpatine sent him off to kill Qui Gon Jinn as a 'beta test' for the plan to directly strike at the Jedi council members using sheer force. The plan obviously changed significantly when Maul was unexpectedly defeated by a very lucky, last ditch; Obi Wan Kenobi maneuver.

I have always thought this.

I would love to see a What If series showing Mauls life if he defeated Obi Wan. Does he take Anakin in as his apprentice? Does he overthrow Sidious? Does he overcome his hatred and stray from the ways of the Sith?

I always find the upper echelons of the prequel era Jedi/Sith orders super interesting. It’s like they’re all in the same classroom with good grades. Yeah Ani defeated Dooku but Dooku got weaker as he aged, Maul could’ve been pre-mustafar Anakin level if not for his injuries, Mace is… Mace, Yoda was the strongest but he was old too, Sidious is Sidious , cool to see all the different handicaps and circumstances at work to where we can speculate beyond just what we see and here from the movies/comics.

You can not forget the augmentation that took place when Mother Talzin rebuilt Maul. She likely enhance his powers with darkside magic just as she did with Savauge Opress.

His legs getting chopped of made him tap into a new level of rage against obi wan, the jedi and his old master sidious abandoning him. It made him more powerful, as without this hate and rage he may not have been as powerful with legs.

That could track with what Sidious said about Maul having become a rival

Everyone who lost those Midoclorians Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul, Count Dooku and Qui-gon jin, cad bane(When spear when through), all separatists leaders, obi-wan(Only the shoulder and knee, that is a minor yet big enough cut, only subtle difference, then burned a-bit being attacked by vader), Mace Windu and Luke Skywalker, Kanen Jarus(By blinding the eye), all inquisitors of the dark Jedi, Snoke, Kylo ren convert to ben solo(temporary wound then healed), general grevious, Leia organa may experience some damage throughout her life, All force sensitives injured by lightsaber, energy based weapon or blaster shot, or electric attacks or fire; or bladed weapon slashing though their body; Including Asoka Tano being shot in the shoulder. All clone troopers who were hit by a laser once. It counts on a celluar level. Minor injuries are subtle, yet it effects the user.

I'm hella bias here as a Maul fanboy, but yes I totally agree with you about his potential if he had remained whole. I really wanna see this played out in film, animated or live action, where he doesn't get defeated by Obi-Wan and isn't cut in half, maybe it's a draw or he just gets shoved into the hole. Kind of a "what if" spin-off show or series like what Marvel has been doing, or maybe like an "alternate universe" version of Maul. Alternste universe could be their doorway to bring legends characters into canon after that terrible mistake of removing them. Not everyone is a fan of changing canon but they made a mistake by throwing away some of the best characters from KOTOR era. It seems like they want to bring in some of those characters, like Revan for example.

Considering the established way the force works, I think Phantom Menace Maul would have been able to become much stronger if he was trained longer as a full sith lord like Vader, and he probably would have been too strong in his place, leading to the empire not actually collapsing the way it did. He'd almost certainly betray Sidious eventually, replacing him at some point, but without any connection to another person like Vader with Luke, he would have stayed to rule the empire. His being alive during the clone wars would have been very different, serving almost as a second Grievous in bringing down more Jedi, but how things would go with Anakin would be an interesting consideration. Sidious would probably still want to get Anakin as a servant, but with Maul still intact, he likely would have been treated exactly how Luke later was; they'd try to turn him to the dark side, and make him some kind of additional sith. Since we know from comic material that Vader could beat a replica of Maul, but in a very close fight, he would probably kill Maul at some point, but we'd still have the complication of Luke and Leia, making this alternate storyline much harder to predict. I'm guessing Padme would still have them, but there are a lot of variable details in wether Anakin would still be cut and burned on Mustafar, or maybe Obi-Wan would have gone after Maul instead. This would be an interesting thing to see examined in detail at some point.

He'd never be able to beat Windu, Mace is any dark side lightsaber combatant's worst nightmare. But at full potential Maul could beat almost anyone else in physical combat, except for Sidious, Yoda, and pre-Mustafar Vader.

I think that the midichlorians issue isn’t really worth exploring unless you’re simply asking could Maul gone with further with more, which the answer is simply yes. More equals more. However, I think the better question to ask is would it have mattered? And I think the answer is no. I think the Maul we get as result of him losing his legs is far better off than what he would’ve been had he never lost the bottom half. I think Sideous would have just kept pushing him into his little pigeon hole and limited his growth. Up until Dooku came around. Then, the two of them would have either simply killed him off, or they would have ended up exiling him in the end. Either way, I don’t think he would have trained as hard or grown as much as he did once he didn’t have legs to stand on. I think it is purely that hatred of Kenobi, of Sedious, and of the universe at large that forced him to tap into his rage in new and interesting ways that he didn’t bother to before he lost his legs. Without that handicap to drive him down those avenues, he’d probably just try to make himself a sharper blade, rather than branching out into being a more multifaceted weapon.

Let's say Obi Wan stabbed him in his stomach instead and he fell in the reactor then we would see an angry full body Mual more powerful remembering his defeat.

I think Maul is slept on way too much in terms of sheer force potential. If properly trained he could have equaled Dooku.

The connection to the force is not about how much midichlorians you have but about midichlorian density. Elsewise Yoda wouldn't be as strong in the force as he is small. The reason why Vader lost so much potential is the conflict in him after the events of Return of the Sith, the conflict that Luke could later sense in him. Thus i would say that maul did not lose any potential by being chopped in half.

Losing parts of your physical body doesn't make you lose Force power. First of all, midichlorians don't actually give a person power in the Force, otherwise you could just inject people with midichlorians to make them more powerful, and small Force users like Yoda would be weak. They're more of an indicator. Also, if you listen to what's said in TPM, it's the CONCENTRATION of midichlorians in cells that indicate Force power. Losing parts of your body doesn't change the concentration just like pouring out half a glass of salt water doesn't reduce its saltiness. Anakin's loss of power after his injuries was mainly psychological.

Anakin lost 40% of his connection to the Force. However, neither the Jedi nor Sidious (who saw him as a failure after RotS).allowed him to reach his full potential. As a result, despite being the stronger, his potential never developed beyond 80% that of the power of Palpatine. Lucas had also stated that while Anakin, Luke and Leia were born with the same potential, that Luke was weaker than what Leia could’ve been had she committed himself to fully train as a Jedi, because he lost his hand. At any rate, using the Force to is like a muscle. The more you train, the varied training you do, the understanding you get from that and the more you push yourself, the more yo develop you potential and the stronger you get. Maul constantly pushed himself, while the Jedi took their time, and so he progressed closer to his potential than the average Jedi, and unlike the Jedi, Maul wasn’t hesitant with was his powers to the full.

It would have mattered as Maul was a trained assassin Even if Maul hadn't lost half of his true potential. Being an assassin would have only made him more of a threat to Siddious and the Jedi which Siddious wouldn't be able to control undermining all the work up until then even if that doesn't happen Anakin fullfies his destiny as the chosen one in the process restores balance to the Jedi order as well as the Force. Changing the outcome of the war and all of history to come.

I don't know if this is canon or not but I heard that Savage was more force sensitive then Maul but wasn't trained at all, just used brute strength in both melee and force. But maul is more skillful so he is the master

This is my personal opinion : I think maul at peak would have definitely been more powerful : I honestly think on parr with Sidious or even slightly more powerful . Because Sids chose Maul over Mother Talzin and saw more potential in him . And people don’t realise that both Sids and Dooku couldn’t defeat Mother Talzin.. So if Maul was at his peak I reckon he would have been more powerful then his mother..

As much as I liked when he came back in clone wars and rebels it makes no sense because he clearly lacks most of his digestive system from being slide pretty high above the waist. Yet he survived by anger and eating rats what?
