Did Discord just make Scamming Easier?

Күн бұрынYes, yes they did. But is Discord intentionally releasing a horrendous update? Or is there a 400 IQ move hidden somewhere in this update?
Turns out, it's complicated. Discord is allowing any bot to become verified. Discord's trying to make things easier for bot developers so that Discord bots can grow, specifically Discord user apps. But does this reason have an ulterior motive?
And better yet, does the term "verified" even mean anything at this point?

(I’m Lucy) To be fair my fake MEE6 bot was terminated within 3 hours and my account after a day (though I’ve gotten it back) - But 3 hours is still a long time and you don’t have to forget that the invite to it was shared in the ddevs threads, so real scam bots will likely take longer to get banned

The current update basically strips the significance of bot verification. Discord should think of a more effective solution to prevent scamming, not just for its reputation but also for the sake of user safety.

Seems discord is forgetting about community servers now. It almost seems like every big server nowadays is dying or full of low quality members. There's no apps without servers. IMO, they need to bring back the server partner program or at least give a better incentive for going through the pain of growing a server. There's no competition or gain whatsoever from doing all the work.

It gets harder and harder to detect discord scams with every update they add. Not only do some of the features they have do nothing but clutter the website, but it seems like they intentionally try to screw everyone six ways to sunday. Oh how hard it's getting to like this platform...

Honestly if Discord makes it where these scams can get shut down within an hour of reporting them, then it'll be a massive incentive for anti-scammers to keep pushing forward. Nothing feels better than a bot you reporting getting nuked off the platform

At this point the best way to deal with those scams is to just be informed and touch grass. It's funny how discord's staff back paddle when folks get mad,if they get afraid of the backlash it means it's not a good thing.

As a bot dev, the fact that verification *isn't* intended to be a mark of your bot being safe/real just pisses me off. Instead of auditing and preventing these bots from coming through in the first place they would rather just have your ID to track you down if it's a scam?? They need to get real with themselves.

Honestly, why bother at all with Age verification? You're placing your ID (even obscured) online somewhere in the hands of some guy that has no authority, trust, or any way to verify that they would use the ID in accordance with the law. Just mark all the channels as NSFW, then let Discord handle accounts that have incorrect DoB. Even if someone was legitimately blocked from accessing that server, I'm sure they would find somewhere else online to... *view* whatever they 'need'.

I guess another way to see if a discord bot is not safe but i guess a bit safer is to see if it actually has privileged intents (if you go to a bot profile it’s the tab all the way to the right) if it can read messages or see memebers then that means that the owner has actually filled a form in order to get these.

I don't think amount of servers really matters. First: scammers known for their amount of twinks/hacked accounts. They can just create thoose 75 servers and add bot to it. Second: On the other side, there can be some highly specialized bots, with functions being important only for 10-20 servers. And verifying them can be a problem. So... I don't see how it changes barely anything in terms of defense, but it really make bot verification more accessible for small communities.

I just feel like a group of people running one of the largest chatting apps in the world would think, "How about we have the blue check mark for any bot that's just verified, and a gold one for ones that were verified the old way, so that people can use verified apps on their account but still have the gold check marks for bots in at least 75 discord servers"

Developer compliance has always been fast. Intent / bot verification apps take a day at most, and so do reports. I guess that’s good when any bot can be verified regardless of size or intent😅

I'm only in it to follow/lurk a few video game related servers at this point, lol. I stopped talking a long time ago, and I used Redact to remove most of my messages (before it required a sub to delete old messages). I recommend Undiscord script if you don't mind the manual work required (selecting chats and channels manually). It works like a charm if you got time, though.

how to not get hacked or fall for any of these: 1. if its from a dm type the real server in google and join the one in the first page its probably the real one 2. if people add you just so they can get you into a server its probably a scam 3. be VERY cautious with what apps you verify on and never use your passwords on any site or log in form (especially google forms 💀) 4. if its too good to be true it probably is 5. (same thing as last one but kinda different idk) nothing is ever free in life 6. just dont click on links that arent trusted, always research what you click on or download!!! I can safely say their page of white definitely has gotten ‘better’ in terms of responding, but not with resolution. Reporting individual messages in a server did virtually nothing, and going to Discord directly left them with saying ‘yeah whatever just use the report button even if it’s the whole server that’s like this.’ The easiest way by far to get in contact however is to right formally. I’m not too active on Discord anyway.

My bot had gotten denied for verification because we had some "violation of Developer Guidelines" that they refused to elaborate on and determined it was unappealable, even though the bot was genuinely intended to be general-purpose and be a helpful bot. The Discord team said the bot would never be able to be verified in the future. Meanwhile, some people create blatantly malicious bots with the sole intent of stealing people's information, grabbing user's discord tokens, etc., and those bots walk right through the verification process. In any case, my bot has now been verified 2 hours ago due to this new change 💀💀💀

Yea about scams, I actually fell for one a week ago(sucks to be me and yes im dumb) I have been sending support tickets on the website but they are keep getting solved, the last ticket that I sent this afternoon got solved after 4 minutes. Am I doing something wrong? Can someone help me out?

The thing is: For people (like me), actually having self-bots, meaning to be only in your own server, it's awesome to have the verification. But for else.... ???

Imo I think they should have requirements in a form of "either". Either your bot should have more than 200 cumulative users across all servers or it should be on at least 75 servers or please verify it with your ID. And if someone creates a bot with a very similar name to a popular bot, it should say something like "wait until we verify your bots name" and in the meanwhile give bot a temporary name so in case if that was a mistake the developer still can begin with development of the bot
