In part II of my series on Elvis and race, I examine the common accusation that Elvis Presley "stole" music from black people. He can rightly be accused of appropriating black culture at a time when black artists were being shunned by the mainstream, but what does it mean to 'borrow' music from artists you admire who belong to a racial or ethnic group that was maligned by the industry at the time? And when can you accuse an artist of going beyond simply borrowing from the art they love, or even appropriating a culture, to outright stealing?
