I really like them building up some original moments and locals, but I swear every time those whispers show up, I just know I’m in for a sub par time. Also, kinda annoyed with them turning down the gore and more graphic scenes, like sephiroth rampage through the Shinra building , where you have to follow the trail of corpses, while navigating through bloody, slashed up corridors , all the while some extremely eerie music is playing. You can tell that rebirth kinda cooled it with all the changes.

I’ll always be grateful to Remake for introducing me to FF and story-based videogames as a whole. However, even I could tell that there was something very weird in that final part of the story. It left me so confounded that I played the original immediately after and it’s still one of my favorite games to this day, despite being from a younger generation. I guess in a weird way, the Remake not being 1:1 is part of what got me to look deeper (even if it was out of frustration).

It didn't need to be a 1:1 but deviating the critical story moments was a mistake. They should've kept the moments that are most famous faithful then expand/add smaller stories with the original ideas.

it's possible to be faithful without being 1:1. Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, and Persona 3 all had remakes recently, and none of them are 1:1 remakes. However, all were well received, because they were still overall faithful to their original experiences, while remixing and expanding on certain elements to keep veterans on their toes. Final Fantasy IV also had a remake in-line with those past examples, and that was fantastic imo. Biggest thing - none of these were secretly a multiversal meta-sequel to their original game

they had broader appeal by visual upgrading and broad design but honestly they all aren't great P3 with its censorship, scene changed, agenda push, worse VA work and casualization of the game design RE4 for sanitization, microtransactions and weaker dialogue DS for its sanization, agenda, and talking Isaac now getting good praise doesn't mean much if the audience of that is either ignorant of the changes or doesn't have a standard to push back on them be it conformity or apathy

I played OG back in 1997 when I was 15. I also played 4, 6, 8 and 9, which I call the golden age of FF, so I grew up with memories of these games in my youth. For me, I think where we’re going with the remake trilogy is pure fucking genius. I never expected a 1:1 remake and to have the games similar in fashion with Capcom’s RE series, I personally would’ve gotten bored. Of course there are fans who are pissed that they have to buy the game three times now or how there’s no old school turn based attack. I love how the remake trilogy is an extension of the original story that makes you think harder and messes you up more.

Yeah I do think that concerns of player boredom or overt comparison with OG was something Square wanted to avoid and may have informed the direction. I think most of all I'm glad that the 1997 game is still relevant and canonical in the overall story of Final Fantasy 7. It can't be consigned to the past if it's the foundation from which Remake story tangents, and I love that.

At this point, I've got mixed feelings about these remakes. On one hand, their visuals, music and gameplay are all phenomenal, and at first I was excited to see how the story would change after Midgar. But after playing Rebirth.. idk. I enjoy certain changes to the story, but at this point I think it's diverged far too much from the original game. Yet at the same time it feels like they're trying so hard to keep it generally in-line with the events of the original that when the new elements come about, they just feel bizarre and sort of forced in for the sake of mixing up the story. The late game parts of Rebirth really went off the rails, and the ending was really only saved by the incredible final dungeon and great music. I have no idea what the frick they're doing with this story anymore. Remake set up an interesting idea of multiple timelines and acted like this was gonna more or less be a new story in a lot of ways, but then Rebirth tried to walk that back while simultaneously still trying to change things up all over the place with all these new plot elements that "kinda change stuff but at the same time really don't".

in short yes, changing it just ruins it after the hype season ends "keep people guessing" is always a dumb thing they push when it doesn't matter in the long run, its a short term goal that goes nowhere when the story doesn't and CAN'T change and even then the whole reason to see the remake is to see the original moments done again in a new coat of paint, not changed but better realized it just makes the changes more arbituary and noticeable when it happens it has more character moments but that doesn't make them stronger to the less they had before, more just for more's sake and again by the end of it we'll be back where we were before...wishing for a actual remake we'll never get

The fact is that FF7 has two extremely different types of fans, the "casuals" who just want the original again with supped up graphics and the "super fans" who engage with all of the extended universe stuff and enjoy the Kingdom Hearts-esque type of overly complicated storytelling. The Remake trilogy seems to have doubled down on the "super fans" leaving the "casuals" high and dry. For me, the Remakes are at their best when they follow the original story and expand on it (seeing Jessie's dad with Mako poisoning) and at their worst when they delve in multiverse nonsense.

I think given that people who don't even play video games know that Sephiroth is the greatest video game villain ever. The changes to his character are fine. The fact is that the general aura of mystery that surrounded Sephiroth in 97 is gone forever, in the same way, that the shock value of Aerith dying can't be recreated. Things like this are why I am glad that fans don't develop or write video games. Shifts in perspective keep classic stories in the hearts and minds of future generations and without new perspectives these stories would be lost to time. I do agree that SE is struggling to figure out what its target audience is but in the case of ff7 I think they genuinely have a definitive version of the story that they want to tell.

I have an overwhelming amount of positive things to say about Remake and Rebirth. I much prefer what we are getting now over a 1:1 Remake. however Ever Crisis should of been the true 1:1 Remake of FF7 with options to have the new or old visuals and the choice to have the original script or a more correct translated one. A 1-to-1 remaster would not translate well to 4K graphics with professional voice acting. The only thing is that they included Cloud and Tifas romantic history alot earlier in the story than in OG and rather seamlessly incorporated Yuffie as a non-optional party member aswell. I am almost certain that Aerith _is_ dead and if the multiverse is real and not just an aspect of LS, "our" Aerith is still dead and will most likley not end up reuniting with her friends, even if "a" Aerith gets a shot at life in another world at the end of pt3. If Zack isn't just a dead spirit being guided by Aerith to aid Cloud, i won't be surprised if he ends up sacrificing himself for Cloud _again_ in pt3 either.

Great question. Ff7 is still to this day(imo), the best game ever made, and the original psx version still holds up and is amazing to play. Seems as if this push for realism in the modern day just seems to water games down when ff7 really had a wonderful alice in wonderland type feeling...the rough translation even added to this as it really made my brain think to parse out what's going on. Moreover, I don't think remaking ff7 for a "modern audience" has even had the intended effect as sales have been middling and serves only to alienate og fans. So maybe a 1to1 remake would've been in better faith to their fans and honestly probably would've sold better...look at persona 5.

As a fan of the original since around its release, I never wanted a 1-to-1 remake. The game is so defined by its technological constraints, it would never work in a modern realization. I feel like in a lot of ways the Remake trilogy captures the spirit of it, its battle system feels like the action system they wanted ATB to be since its introduction in FFIV. But the story has a "I have to write an essay for school but don't know what to write about...oh I know, I'll write about writing an essay!" energy to it. I tolerated it in Remake since it only disrupted its ending and I thought that part 2 would have to contend with those changes and really go in a completely different direction. But then Rebirth starts with the Nibelheim flashback...which no longer makes narrative sense since Sephiroth's bad guy status was directly established in Remake to the point where none of the characters would mistake him for an ally. Similarly, the midgarsormr scene is completely unnecessary because we last saw Sephiroth creating a portal to a world where they fought fate itself, which is a much stronger demonstration of is power. It is a shame, since so much is hugely improved compared to the original, but the new narrative layer draws attention to the developers themselves away from the actual story the game is supposedly retelling. It's no wonder people are singling out Nomura, justified or not, because that's what this new metastory invites.

I love that they said the original is the real FF7 and that this new one is a sequel. I think this practice of looking at the classics of of our medium and trying to bury the original art under shiny new graphics has been pretty awful and it's nice to see the creators of this game tackle what it means to do a "remake" of a classic and toy with expectations. They've made the original game playable on everything and people should do that if they want the original game imo. It hasn't stopped being what it always was just because we have new tech. FF7 will always be the same great game and everyone should check it out.

I think the biggest hurdle is that FF7 has a more difficult time leaving a good first impression on modern audiences versus 7R. The translation is messy, some sections like Wall Market might come across as insensitive, and I know a number of people who just can't get over the original character models. Playing FF7 for the first time in modern times requires a shift in mindset that 7R wouldn't have to worry about. 7R should have been a modern alternative to experience the story, it inherently wouldn't replace the original due to being so different in its gameplay and presentation, and having the original so readily available. Final Fantasy IV has both its Pixel Remaster and its 3D remake readily available on Steam, and one doesn't replace the other - they're both alternate ways to experience the same fundamental story

The problem with Remake and Rebirth is that they are not remakes of OG at all, faithful or otherwise. When you take the very heart of the story and themes and throw them out the window and design it as a sequel ( because the events of OG have already happened and players literally depend on OG context to understand what's happening and why ), it's not a remake. You can play every other video game remake in history and still understand the story of the OG counterpart, be it the OG is the better or worse experience. 7 is no such case. A remake doesn't need to be 1:1 to be faithful like Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes. But 7 isn't even faithful with expansion of lore. I don't agree VII is for Legacy fans though that's my own anger and frustration coming out, but I absolutely will die on the hill it's not for new-comers because it's not new-comer friendly when the story of Remake depends on knowing prior knowledge that's within the OG that many have not played. It's a terrible entry point. If any other remake in history tried to pull what FF7 did, it would get burned alive. A friend mentioned FF7 has fallen into the Pokemon complex - no matter what Square turns out just like GameFreak, people will eat it and convince themselves it's good. I love your videos as always Alleyway. Curious about your thoughts on the character relationships and wanting to hear it out because my experience was the total opposite. There’s no way you could possibly equate the two. Just because the remake series has issues doesn’t mean it suffers from the same problems of “fans will eat it up no matter what we crap out” like Pokémon. You can not like Rebirth for what it represents to your relationship with the original game, that doesn’t make it not a well made game where you can feel the effort put in.

Personally, as a traditionalist, I find the "1:1" argument to be overplayed and a little disingenuous. The reality is far more nuanced. Anecdotally, I know no one who grew up with these games that was in the hypothetical "1:1" boat. There's either support for the new style, or disappointment in what was given. From general observation, and more in line with how I felt personally, most people disappointed with these games are fine with, and even enjoy many if not most of the liberties taken. Its the deviation from tone and spirit of the original in a reckless fashion that these folks take issue with. Resident Evil 1 and 2 remakes are two of my favorite games of all time, matching their predecessors in many ways. Bringing in myriad new ideas and taking plenty of liberties with characters, plot and gameplay, while still being firmly identifiable as their counterparts in spirit. Granted RE is not a rich story-focused experience like FF7 but the philosophy behind the remakes was a lesson that more studios, especially Square, should have paid attention to. Of course all of this is academic at this point. Time will be the ultimate judge of whether this was the right direction for Square to take with the Remake trilogy. It's far too late for them to turn the ship around now.

It didn't even need a remake. It needed a simple, straightforward remaster. And that's the end of it. I will die on this hill if I have to. I'm sick and tired of remakes. And since emulation is more often than not better than modern ports of old games I sail the seven seas and never pay a single dime. These corpos are so out of touch. These companies need to be reverted back to indie status and start anew from scratch. P.S. Nomura is a hack. He should get demoted at the very least. P.S.S. The recent Capcom survey shows that this "new market" simply does not exist. Most gamers are between 20 and 40 years old. Chasing kids and teenagers is also weird in and of itself from a purely financial perspective because kids and teenagers do not have enough disposable income and are mostly reliant on their parents. It's the adults who have the money to sustain a gaming hobby. They should be the default target audience. Kids and teenagers will eventually become adults as well, so you do not need to chase them. They will come to you instead.

Depends on the definition of need. You could argue that no great game needs a remake. Just remasters to make sure they’re still available on modern consoles. Only games that couldn’t fully see their vision through and had potential need remakes in my opinion. The remake series features more expanded upon world building and characters, but the original game has better storytelling and pacing. Both are great for what they are.

I wanted a nearly 1 to 1 remake, maybe introduce more of Zack's stuff, and Cissnei, directly into FF 7. But it was largely because the original translation had issues for such a complex story, and since I don't replay the game every year or two like I used to, I'm forgetting the finer details of the original and less interested in replaying it like I used to, because it feels almost like an indecipherable mess again. I'm also worried if the combat will feel too much like FF 15, rather than something like a Tales of game, because I just did not gel with FF 15 on two attempts.

I've commented elsewhere here, but yeah, I think if Ever Crisis was a 1:1 remake/remaster published alongside the new Remake trilogy, rather than a mobile gacha game, that would have been a sweet release package by Square.

I am a old fan, i love the new story elements, if you enjoy ff7 universe beyond the og game its a really rewarding experience to see them building towards what looks like an avengers endgame like culmination after 30 years While ff16 and 15 were for sure as you describe trying to keep old fans and cater to new, I don't view ff7r in the same light. I think they saw the opportunity to do something special and took the risk to try to achieve it, otherwise they could've done a 1:1 story remake just with the new hybrid battle system

I kinda wanted an 88% remake because certain moments like Cloud involved in certain Honey bee rooms wasn't appropriate, another moment I disliked was Cloud slapping Aerith.. yeah he was controlled but that original game moment didn't sit well with me. Now that I've experienced Square's version for FF7R in two games... I'm more intrigued by their choice and bet I wouldn't have been as excited for the 3rd game as I am now. It's still not perfect but I'm truly impressed with how they handled stuff. Max Dood also helped, if I never saw his theories on Remake, I would've seen the hidden message that this Aerith is from the future or from the original. Just didn't catch that during my playthrough.

I didn't like alot about remake... whereas I loved alot about rebirth... however a 1:1 really should've been done...slot of things they've added are great and alot they've added was unnecessary... basically alot depends on how they stick the landing....in regards to how the remake trilogy is viewed. But I don't think we would ever get a faithful remake

Once the FFVII Remake trilogy is complete, I would like Square Enix to remake FFVII. 1:1. They will have virtually all the assets they need and an experienced team. Of course it won't happen, but it would be an extraordinary project, a triple AAA game with immense variety of environment designs and little filler.

They're never going to be able to please everyone, I suppose. I have no nostalgia for FFVII, or for FF in general. I loved the original VII, and I'm largely having a wonderful time with the Remake titles (the combat system is genuinely one of my all-time favorites). I think a more faithful remake could have been great --- but I feel like I have to wait until the final part comes out before I try to judge whether this thing they're trying to do was a good idea or not. Storywise, coming off Remake, I had some small concerns but saw potential. Coming off Rebirth, my concerns are admittedly bigger. What the creators are doing with the story is risky, and I'm worried about the fact that they're putting so much energy into confusing us and keeping us speculating. I don't see more than two alternatives --- either they stick the landing in a way that is deeply satisfying, or the ending falls flat on its face and the whole thing falls apart. The end of Rebirth actually left me a little annoyed because I felt like I spent more time trying to follow what was happening than going through the characters' emotional journeys with them. Imo the story is at its best when it's expanding on and enriching what it already has rather than when it's throwing in all these wacky new elements. Remake is a less extreme version, and luckily great character work and world-building help make up for it, but this kind of thing is why I stopped being a Kingdom Hearts fan lol. I don't like being strung along and then disappointed.

Nah i dont, when it comes to the topic of remakes theres going to be a group of people who get upset. Theres people who complain about the demons souls and shadow of the collosus remake because theyre the same, theres people who complain about dead space because they ruined the vibe of the origonal, theres people who complain about the resident evil remakes, theres people who complain about the last of us remake. Dont get me wrong some complaints are valid but the point im trying to make is regardless of how they went about this there would be a group who didnt like it. I never loom at commnents of remake announcements anymore because its ussualy filled with people complaining.

I feel like you're talking *about* the point rather than the point. Do people really think that the Weapons have been turned into Fish now and that they won't evolve into the ones we know in the third one? The Midgardsormr part was honestly one of my highlights of the game. I was certain they couldn't get that bit rught in any way. "Did Sephiroth do this?" Did the guy who opened up a crazy fate dimension, sending ghosts everywhere, cutting buildings in half and possessing the men in black capes kill a snake? Yeah I guess. The problem was Sephiroth in Remake absolutely ruining any chance of this moment being anything like it used to be and the fact that they managed to turn it around into a complete shocker of a moment that made me shout "HOLY FU" out loud was a hell of an apology. Rebirth managed to walk back so much and practically *be* the 1:1 remake for 90% of its runtime, frankly I'm still shocked. It says a lot when you can Switch Zack's interjections off for the New Game+.

you've already said as much but it just needed a remake instead of a sequel. look at Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for examples of a successful nearly 1:1 remake. I replayed 1997 Final Fantasy 7 last year and got 100% of the achievements but have absolutely zero desire to play the new "remakes". yeah I like turn based games, I loved the atmosphere and music, I'm tired of Square telling me indirectly I'm a relic of the past and I should consume their products and wait for them to drip feed me more content until I die. I also replayed Final Fantasy Tactics: WoTL recently on emulator because I know they'd never remake that game and if they did they'd ruin it. I loved old Square, I hope new Square fails so they can go back to their roots. It's wild to me they'd get so popular off a certain style of game then completely trash it after Final Fantasy 10. Like how are you going to make so many games and get so many players to love your style then tell them later the gameplay they loved is old and bad?

Yes, it does need a 1:1ish remake (like Capcom did with resident evil), instead of this cynical, episodic (and separately individually paid for), generic format with story changes that no one asked for and make it the same kind of schmaltzy story as their current offerings. Final fantasy VII was a unique and extremely cool story, and I don't think we will ever be given a one-to-one remake with improved graphics and quality of life changes. I find 1:1 remakes incredible boring right now. It was a nice novelty a few years back to remake games as 1:1 but now is just not enough. Demon Souls remake, although a great game, it was boring because I already had played the original. Same for shadow of the colossus. Sure, I played them once, but it was whatever, even tho I love the originals. Some of my favorite games ever that had gotten a remake, I have 0 interest in paying: Super Mario RPG, Live a Live, the upcoming Sneake Eater. I'm glad they choose to do the Remake trilogy they way they have done so far. This project has elevated FF7 as a whole as one of the top 3 games/franchises of my life. And I love every second of them, specially not knowing exactly what will happen.

It's like they actually believe they can get the same experience and feeling the first time they played the original FF7 if the story remains exactly the same with no revisions. I really hate to break the bad news to you guys.... but you can't experience something for the first time twice. You're not complaining about the changes to the story. You're complaining because you had unreasonable and unrealistic expectations about how the games would make you feel. I know you think you're right, but you're not. Get over it.
