The Old Testament can feel quite harsh when you're viewing it through a modern lens. Dr. Heiser was very right to point out that there is context to consider. It changes things quite radically, but you have to be willing to go a bit deeper than just the translated Biblical text. It's just not enough to fully understand what was going on there.

Dr. Heiser was the most engaging and informative biblical scholar I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of them for over 50 years. His death from cancer about a year ago, at just 60, was a loss that many will be feeling for years to come. He revealed things from the text that I would never have seen on my own, and he gave me a perspective on Scripture that's been unmatched by any other teachers, pastors, or theologians. Other than his death, my only greater regret is not discovering him a decade earlier than I did. He was a treasure.

The Canaanites actually had 440 yrs to repent. God told Abram in Gen. 15:13-16 that his descendants would be afflicted in slavery for 400 yrs, during which time He would judge the sins of the Canaanites. God wanted to give the Israelites the land a lot sooner, but then He sentenced the Israelites to wander in the desert for 40 extra yrs because the majority of them refused to believe that God would help them conquer Canaan.

I was stuck for years in what is called non duality. It’s very popular. Eastern/ Buddhism type thing. Its core message is we are all one being. The person& world is an illusion. No free will, no doer, everything is just happening, no evil, just life happening. I see new age videos addressed by christians but never non duality. Which is new age but the guru’s & teachers would disagree! Rupert Spira, simply always awake,& Jim Newman are very popular KZfaq channels. Most followers believe they will overcome suffering because there is no self to suffer. I became Nihilistic. Just wanted to ask& to say thanks for your channel & others. I would recommend reading the book of Matthew and or John if you haven’t already. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. May God fill you with the Holy Spirit and guide your steps as you seek him, in Jesus name. A lot of what you are asking is addressed in the bible. Just keep reading and pray to god to open your eyes for understanding. I say this because the most important thing is to read the word for yourself. We are told to test the spirit so that includes testing what I say. There are many false teachers so always refer to scripture and you will be safe. Anyway take care and keep well. @@trumpbellend6717 Biblical "slavery" did not involve capture (Exodus 21:16). Runaway slaves also had legal protections (Deuteronomy 23:16). Compare this to other ancient codes like the Code of Hammurabi, and suddenly, the Bible seems a lot more moral.

@@mentalwarfare2038 The verse you mention from Deuteronomy regarding how to handle a runaway slave. The concensus among biblical scholars is that this verse refers specifically to foreign slaves that have escaped to your lands from the enemies that the *previous verse* spoke of defeating and the surrounding lands. Hence the " let him live in "your" midst " ( the Israelites) and being able to pick one of "your" (the Israelites) towns to live in. This once again is no different than that from some of the American chattel slave states that forbid the returning of runaway slaves from other states whilst still permitting slave ownership. For example ..... Pennsylvania ( 1780 ) "No negro or mulatto slave... shall be removed out of this state, with the design and intention that the place of abode or residence of such slave or servant shall be thereby altered or changed."

I think that it goes even deeper than this. As we know from what Dr. Turek mentioned, other "gods" demanded that their people sacrifice to them their children. So, just as much of the Old Testament Law was intended to set Israel apart from the nations, the test of Abraham accomplished the same thing: As I understand it, God was sending the message that far from demanding the sacrifice of children, He Himself would sacrifice His own Son for us (a complete 180 turn). Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son,” and later in the reading, God does provides a ram. But the lamb that God ultimately provides is Jesus, His own Son, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Abraham had faith in God and trusted that God indeed would provide the lamb and not require the sacrifice of Isaac. Again, when Abraham told Isaac that God would provide the lamb, he was not lying to Isaac. Abraham did not understand God's full plan, but he knew through faith that God had a plan and would indeed provide a substitute. God was not "immoral" for commanding the sacrifice of Isaac because it was never the true plan or intent by God. The whole point was to show the plan of substitutional sacrifice by a lamb provided by God (i.e. THE Lamb of God - Jesus Christ). This was a demonstration of the plan of salvation, never at any point was Isaac in true danger of being sacrificed. Abraham understood this this from the moment God gave the command! He did not understand the whole plan of what God (as we often do not understand God's ways) but Abraham had the faith in God to follow His command and trust that sacrificing Isaac was not God's true intention. This passage is not only a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God, but also a lesson in faith and trusting that God always has a plan, and that God's plan is always perfect and always for our benefit.

Generally speaking, those who are anti-GOD don’t really care to sincerely search for true understanding of His Word. The phasing of the question (What would you do?) gives Frank the opportunity to avoid addressing the issue. He answers correctly that he doesn't know how he would react in a high stress situation. That's fair. But the better question would be, what *should* he do if God asks him to kill his child?
@TheNationOfTexas
@TheNationOfTexas 4 күн бұрын
In order to have a balanced scientific answer, we'd need to add a few nuances to that question. Abraham had no children when God promised him descendants. His wife was too old to have kids, so this was a miraculous situation. If Frank saw that the existence of his child was undoubtedly the work of an all powerful God, he would probably have enough faith to say, "yes, I'll sacrifice him to you" with much more certainty of faith. I think our faith is understood in direct proportion to the knowledge God has given us. He doesn't leave us to our own devices and request faith based on nothing. Faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen.

@@erikstyers4005 Comprehension is fundamental, my friend. Sovereignty has nothing to do with amorality. There is a big difference between not being bound by law and lawlessness. Lawlessness is being bound by law like all humanity yet willfully objecting it. Trust me, this is a losing argument for all atheists or anyone who is so prideful enough to challenge the Almighty. You Christian's keep going on about god's all-loving morality so now this puts it to the test when you're faced with this decision. It's not a trick question or a loaded question. God had and has every right to eliminate people including the whole world if He chose to since we are all sinners, but in His mercy, He made a way from His own horrible death to save us and all who repent and follow Him. Sometimes you need to "cut out" cancer vs chemo. Once you understand the complexity of why, you would understand. God is Love, but He also demands Justice. If someone murdered your family...you would demand justice. Although as a believer we might ask for God's mercy on that person in hope he/she would believe and be saved. Only God knows and His decision is Just for all.

The irony of this conversation is that the sentiment that nothing God does is wrong or evil is explained and expressed beautifully in the anime, Noragami. Not the place I thought I'd go to and find my faith bolstered but it was. Even the concept of sinning and how it hurts God is artistically explained as well as chastisement. Kinda wild still but yeah, it was really eye-opening. Seeing it said here is also a real experience.

If there is a God, which I believe there is, He created all things therefore owns all things and can do as He likes with His creation. The old testament was a direction pointer toward Christ and in Christ, Grace, salvation for one's' soul. The old testament was to establish a basis for good and evil, right and wrong, righteousness and unrighteousness ergo the ten commandments. The ten commandments is the basis for all moral societies. The ten commandments is not the basis for atheism. Atheism has no foundation. Atheism is inherently evil hence the 80,000,000+ deaths (murders) due to communism. God will always judge evil sometimes He does it Himself as in Sodom and Gomorrah or other times people as in allies in WWII against the N A Z I S or the people of Israel against the Canaanites. The fear (respect and honor) of God is the beginning of wisdom. God is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him.

If I am a dog owner, I technically own that dog but I still have responsibilities to look after the dog, because it's just abusive to literally do whatever you want without anny care for the actual wellbeing of your property. "The ten commandments is the basis for all moral societies. ". You mean Christian societies. All other societies don't. Though i would doubt it results in moral socities, considering the atrocities Christian societies have committed, like genocides, oppression of minorities, slavery, colonialism. I'm not saying Christian societies cannot do good. For example, they also played a pivotal role in eliminating slavery. But that doesn't eradicate the bad. You cannot just have it your way and only look at the good. Every society does some good, and some bad. "Atheism has no foundation. Atheism is inherently evil hence the 80,000,000+ deaths (murders) due to communism. ". I think you are forgetting that atheism isn't a religion or ideology really. It is simply a form of belief (or rather, lack thereof). So you saying atheists and communists is like me saying muslims are the same as Christians because they both believe in monotheism. They're different religions, just with the same belief in one god. Not all atheists are communists. I'd guess most aren't. I aren't for example. I like democracy a lot. And I argue against all forms of authoritarianism. Also, you are being selective. Most European wars in history, and atrocities by Europeans, have been done by Christians. As a final note, keep in mind that there are more people in the modern day, so obviously casualties will be higher. But the proportion of deaths relative to the overall population could be the same or greater in the past, so it's not all that simple

If you're a materialist atheist who believes we come from the primordial soup and became human through evolution, then you really have no moral claim over anything. Slavery, genocide, rape, or murder can all be seen as the expression of "Survival of the Fittest". There is nothing wrong, then, with culling the weak and propagating the fit. "But it's not good for society!" Based on what standard? "Progress!" Again, based on what standard? I'm assuming it's based on how you and your buddies feel clutching each other's pearls, wagging your finger at GOD. P.S. there's plenty of archeological evidence for what happened in the Bible.
