I feel like she wanted the emotional connection/support from him while, - unbeknownst to him - keeping him at a distance due to his financial situation. There's nothing admirable about that. He's young. He has plenty of time to make it. If he loves her, he's not going to let his temporary circumstances prevent him from pursuing her.
