You are right. For a guy playing at this level such a blunder is unthinkable. `Here, take this. I'll win anyway.` But Esipenko didn't take. `I don't need your pawn. Show some respect`. I think they ended with a draw if I'm not mistaken.

The highest rated game I have for this opening, supposedly called the Devin Gambit, is Zubritskiy-Oparin (2021). Grigoriy also played 3...d5 and won in 29 moves. It has been played on at least 2 other occasions by >2000 players, specifically Navalgund and Flajsman - their opponents also played 3...d5. The only white win is from Navalgund playing against a much weaker player. It surprises me a little that 3...h6 is not a move here as that is the most common reaction to 2 g4 and seems generically useful after 2...e6.

B4 and G4 pawn sacs for white or b5/g5 for black, usually lead to strong center build and potential use of the G-file. It's although a "dubious decision", because black can ignore this move, improve it's position and eventually g4 can be just another over extended weakness, nothing that i would call a mistake, just a very challenging and original way to play and especially good if you consider yourself better than the opponent to get him out of preparation.
