Great video. Stone picker story is interesting… considering the wet year you did well to get 3/4 of the repayments needed. Hopefully you’ll make that extra bit next season or soon enough. Can’t beat having a few income streams to balance the books. Keep up the good work.

We gave years at stone picking and burying with various machines, packed it in 7 or 8 years ago. In a wet year the machines might never come out of the shed, in a normal year stone picking would be clashing with other dry weather work like sowing or baling, the only chance you'd get to make a few quid at it would be in a dry year when there's no pressure on anyone. A tricky enterprise to make money at with expensive repayments to contend with but the best of luck with it.

Thank you so much for that explanation of contracting. I want to get into cutting and handling silage. I'm always seeing videos of people that have more business than they can handle or people that need their silage cut but they're waiting for their contractors to have time for them. So far I'm thinking an older tractor that's easy to afford, some kind of cutter/blower combo and a wagon. Shouldn't be too expensive to start out with but it'll get the job done. I'd be just fine with picking up the extra jobs that others can't get to. Only thing stopping me? I don't even have the money for the cheap stuff. Time to start saving up.

saw a stone picker in use in Scandinavia a few years ago, was the 1st time i saw one in action. contractor was clearing old forest ground. He also had a triple K and towed it on a trailer behind the picker when going from job to job. He would run the harrow over the field 1st then put on the stone picker.

@@FARMERPHIL3690 like everything, advantages and disadvantages. Saw a video where a lad had a similar picker and had lower pickup bars widened to leave smallish stones and a second machine coming with a stone mulcher busting them up. Looked an expensive bit of kit and I'd say the consumables on it would be a serious regular bill. Ya might need a few more years under your belt getting the customers built up before that. Good investment for tillage farmers long term though as would improve ground and save on machinery wear.

Used to be on hire with one of the older ones. Gave it up in the end. Main issues were fellas didnt have ground prepped right/ didnt have it harrowed right or have the big stones picked. Flat stones used block the rotor aswell. Crow bar and sledge were always on board. Also had lads complaining of the price per hour😂

I don't know you're situation Phil, but I think you need to look into the finances of contracting in a bit more depth. You're judging against if you can meet repayments and pay diesel, but not counting any wage for the driver or depreciation on the tractor. If you don't count those things then you just end up tricking yourself into thinking you're making profit when you're actually just subsidising the contracting business with money from yourself that you weren't paid or the farm through tractor costs that weren't paid through contracting. Maybe reach out to a professional or whoever does your accounts

best thing to do with the area where the water is coming up in the new yard is to dig it out again and fill it with the big stones you got from the filed. don't bother putting in the fine stuff to bind it as the water will flow through the gaps the stones. The weight of the machinery passing over that area probably compresses everything too much to allow the water to flow.
