At 2:55 you say the field of view is different for the two lenses both at 25mm. How do you know when the kit lens is at 25mm? Is it because the 25 is next to the index mark? That is probably an approximation. I would say you have 25mm when you have the same field of view as the 25mm prime, not when the 25 is on the index mark.

5:05 I was expecting the 25mm 1.7 to destroy the kit lens and that did not happen at all, besides, I'm afraid with the lack of stabilization the 25mm 1.7 could be useful only for photography and useless for videos unlike the kit lens which does have stabilization. Should I buy this 25mm 1.7? or should I invest more money and buy a low light lens with stabilization? thank you, great content.

Hey man of all my lenses I use the 25mm the least.. in video work I would use a 25mm for something like interview shots but if you want to have the background a little more blown out I would save a little more and get a 42.5mm 1.7 instead (it has stabilization)- but only get this if you have a wider prime like a 17.5mm 1.8 or similar. But if you only have 1 prime lens, the 25mm is a great lens!

f1.7 at ISO 1000 would give a far less grainy result and more details than f5.3 at ISO 2500. The difference would be huge, wouldn't it? I currently have the kit 12-60mm on g85 which gives up to f3.5. Are you saying there wouldn't be much difference in exposure, let's say between f1.7 and f3.5? was planning to get this 25mm lens for low light.

I got the G7 early with the 14-140 kit. As a newbie I thought this would be the only lens I'd ever need. Now, two years later, I've tried a bunch of different lens. My favorite is the Sigma 16mm/1.4, followed by the Panasonic 25mm and the Laowa 7.5mm/2.0. All of these are super sharp and easy to use. Like how the Laowa on infinity focus turns the G7 into an amazing point and shoot.

Great video, really helped. I was on the fence about getting the 25mm to replace kit lens on my GX85 because for video it's not so great indoors.... outdoors it's amazing, indoors it's meh. I almost pulled the trigger until you said the 25mm is a little tighter than the kit lens at 25. Before finding this video, I had my kit set to 25mm to get a feel for what it would be like which I already felt was a little too tight for the videos I'm trying to shoot (my kids) but I figured I could probably work around it because I felt it was right at about my threshold focal length. When you mentioned it was tighter that was all I needed to know and absolutely no one else, at least from the videos I've seen, has mentioned that. I know I can opt for the 20mm but spending the extra $ is out of the question. At this point I'm probably just better off investing in better lighting.

i can only talk about native lenses because that's what i have the most experience with, but generally the 25mm 1.7 will be alright, my only complaint is that it's a bit narrow for my taste, but if you're looking for affordable, this is your best best. the next one i would recommend is the 20mm 1.7, a bit more expensive and slow to focus but it's got a wider field of view. I think those two lenses should be enough to start off with! If you want to a a little off the beaten track, get some vintage lenses (can be anywhere from $20-$100) like from canon's old FD mount and buy a dumb adapters (around $20-30). They won't be as sharp and they won't have autofocus, but maybe you can find something wider than the 25mm 1.7 for almost the same price or less!

Jarem Cabamongan I have. I used Canon FD lenses on it, a 24mm and a 50mm. The focal length doubles since it's a full-frame SLR lens. I didn't use them for long because I don't need long (48mm/100mm) primes and they're quite heavy compared to native lenses. I don't recommend adapting old lenses unless you're seriously strapped for cash or find an amazing old lens. Between the two lenses shown here and the Panasonic 45-150mm you have pretty much every lens you'd ever need for the the majority of uses.
@JodyBruchon
@JodyBruchon 6 жыл бұрын
Are you sure you're shooting at the same focal lengths and equivalent settings in some of these tests? The bokeh comparison shutter vs. aperture doesn't add up right. I know it's impossible to hit the 25mm target exactly but f/5.3 at 1/200 and f/1.7 at 1/400 with the exact same ISO setting should be exposed very differently for identical amounts of light. That's over 3 stops of aperture difference with only one stop of shutter difference. Transcription error? Something reading EXIF wrong?

Hey I think they provide different looks and I'm not a group portrait expert but I would say I prefer this one over the 45-150 just because it's not as long (in case there's not enough space to get everything in the frame). it really depends on what lenses you already have? personally if i dont have a wide angle already or don't have a kit lens, i would go with the 25mm just because it is more versatile.. if you already have a wider angle lens or a kit lens, the 42.5mm is GREAT for portraits and for shallow depth of field shots (more than the 25mm 1.7)... on a budget though, you can't beat the 25mm 1.7!

Yes, I think, like myself, you did waste your money on this 25mm lens. I find it kind of tight and frankly in native lenses I think you want 12. 16 and 42.5. That kit lens that came with the G7 is pretty amazing, especially if you don't need low light and only do landscape. I tested the kit lens against the Rokinon 2.0, native MFT, and frankly the kit lens is better and sharper and better color. I'm talkin stills here. For video I love adapted old Nikkors with a Viltrox. I rented once a Sigma 20 mm 1.4 Nikon mount and I was blow away on what it did on my G7, but this is not a lens from travel. Frankly, for travel and shooting mainly outside, the kit lens can't be beaten, even my the 15mm summilux that will only be better if you need low light. Anbody interested mainly in landscape should NOT buy the Summilux 15mm. Waste of money. Now, inside, sure, but you could also turn the lights on?

Can anyone help me with my 25mm f1.7 (using it on a G7). I cant rack focus by manually turning the lens wheel because it has some excessive play or focus by wire so it lags heavily and doesn't respond to turns, meaning the same turn does different focus ramps each time i repeat it with a focus rod attached to the lens for accuracy (found out it ramps to different lengths for the same half turn depending on how fast you turn the ring). It seems Panasonic is a shit company when it comes to video and nowhere near Canon. From crippled lenses to crippled cameras. Imagine my plight, there is no method of focus marking, unless you can turn it from mark A to mark B at EXACTLY the same speed like a robot.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 3 жыл бұрын
mgr5550 it's a focus by wire lens and pretty much any lens made before the last 3 years is exactly the same so it's not brand specific. This is one of the ways I rack focus though: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/js1kqNerqtmwh2g.html
@mgr5550
@mgr5550 3 жыл бұрын
@@KimCruz1 > Hi Kim, Thanks for your reply,,,,,This is not about focus pulls from A-B. Ive seen your video much earlier about SNAP MOVIE mode. However SNAP has many disadvantages, such as 3 preset timings only, worst of all wont continue recording after it racks focus once it reaches focus BANG recording over, whats the use. And finally only 1080p option. However what im trying to do is different. Im talking focus racking not from point A to B. But focusing on just A (say a coke bottle) that's all, and maintaining that focus manually when i push in with the whole camera on a slider or pull back. The autofocus/tracking even wont do that bec when u start pushing in it start bouncing and hunting and then again n again as you keep pushing in. So that useless. So the only way is by full manual (turning the wheel), Thats where im f***d an exact quarter turn does different lengths of focus pull depending on the speed with which you turn. Now on my canon etc if i put a focus lever band around the focus ring. A quarter turn will focus exactly from say a point A-B no matter how fast you turn. Here the focus is all over the place each time you repeat the quarter turn even with a focus lever (the lever helps do precise exact 12pm-3pm turns etc). So i activated the FOCUS turn assist tool or something its called on the G7 (its just under the AF modes ON/OFF menus in the master menu). That tool shows you a mountain logo on the left and a macro logo to the right and shows with a white line where your focus is (kindly note that this tools feedback is precise and lets you know exactly how far and fast the focus is actually moving). This line confirms that for each quarter turn move repeated, the line ends up at totally different locations on the focus range. So it looks like it depends on the speed with which we are turning. SO this makes a marked lever turn useless as it will render different pulls each time. Though at the bottom of this id just like to know if i got a broken lens or is this the normal way it behaves, i mean different pulls depending on speed of turn. If youd be so kind enough to check this on your lens and tell me. Or is my camera broken, its a brand new G7 used for 2 shoots only after i bought it a year ago.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 3 жыл бұрын
mgr5550 hey man yeah those focus assist tools are actually pretty useless for focus by wire lenses like the 25mm 1.7.. the issue here is the lens design which a lot of mirrorless lenses use. The only way to fix that is to use a manual lens or to get the newer lenses like the 10-25mm 1.7. This is not brand specific as well, almost all mirrorless lenses are focus by wire and it's only been a recent development where some of them have a 'linear' mode like the 10-25 which allows you to have consistent focus racking every time. Personally I rock a sigma 18-35 with a viltrox adapter and that solves it. There's nothing like a manual focus lens if you want to pull focus for your use case.. hope this helps!

I think everyone should at least have some experience using a nifty fifty (which is 25mm in the m43 world) at some point as it is such a talked about lens (compares to the view of the human eye, so they say). I ended up going with the Leica f1.4 25mm as a bargain came up on eBay. It does have a little fringing in high contrast shots, but the colours and quality is awesome. I am still fairly new to it, but I had kept my eye out for a lens of this focal length, so I would get a chance to really give that focal length a good try.

Not a fan of the kit lens, I feel like the photos I get on that I could just use my phone instead. 25mm on the other hand I love, great value lens.

to each their own but wow for $150 the 25mm 1.7 is quite impressive!

The 25mm does not have a tighter field of view. The indicators on the kit lens aren't perfect or you're missing the mark. 25mm is 25mm. It looks like you're shooting with the kit lens set at like 23.

think I'd take the 20mm Lumix over the 25mm tbh
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 4 жыл бұрын
all dependent on use case and honestly, the 20mm is still one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used in this system... my other lenses aside from the 75mm 1.8 and the sigma 18-35 are about the only ones in the same league as the 20mm

haha wow.... bad luck man! honestly i think it's probably the best bang for the buck lens in the system and is quite versatile, a reason why even though I don't always use it, it's always with me on shoots!

Sounds absolutely fine with me! Haven’t handled that lens but by all accounts a great lens for the price! In my opinion if it’s a prime lens, the wider the better because it’s more versatile!

hey man actually it's a japanese word that's spelled Bokeh- so people say it all sorts of ways, 'boca, or bokeh'... but it's just that effect where the background is blurry and lights in the background turn into balls lol I made a video on how it's done in 30 seconds here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/at1pqqeCu7y7eps.html i hope this helps!
