No, you are not being too fussy about the water, my horses' water never looked like this. It's a daily chore no matter the weather that horses have clean water.

If one as a horse owner won't drink the water the horse has to drink, it needs to be cleaned.

The water is gross! Clean water should be available at all times. We have 3 horses and a friend's rescue on our property. We clean the water tanks regularly. Look up algae in water. You may need X-rays to see what is going on with his feet. All my best to you and Black Jack!

Sounds like navicular or he may have foundered in the past. They knew. People please dont beat me up for saying this but will the seller take him back? Strongly suggest moving barns. Everyone from the vet at ppe to trainers at your barn did wrong by you. Good luck. It's hard when yoir heart is involved. I genuinely wish you and BJ well.

No that water is not ok! They should be providing clean fresh water every day, and the troughs should be cleaned often. That is stagnant water and all sorts of bugs can breed in there. Hope he recovers well, and you can get the lameness fixed. I do wonder if the guy who sold him to is being honest about the foot problem

I was a new horse owner as of last spring. I've loved horses all my life, and was fairly educated on them despite not owning one. Leading up to this, I did months of research. Horse prices were really high--for a grade broke horse, mid-teens, some traders wanted near $20k. I wanted a draft cross since I was a slightly larger rider. I just wanted to do easy trail rides. I finally found a 3-year-old broke mare who was breathtakingly beautiful and advertised as very calm and willing. She was not a cheap horse, but not 20k. She was out of state. I traveled alone out to her to see her, had a PPE with x-rays, and honestly did my best in a situation where I was terrified and very unconfident about what questions to ask. The mare was standing calm, the owner rode her first and she did all her gaits smoothly. Then I rode her. She was fine. Passed the PPE with flying colors. So I paid even more money and had her shipped to me. Once I got her back, it was a mess. *After* I had paid for her, the owner admitted that this mare had never been stalled before. I didn't think anything of it until I was just trying to groom her in the stall (no crossties in my barn), and it was terrifying. She was very big and dancing constantly. After weeks of being at my barn (she was predominantly turned out), her stall manners were still terrible. Grooming was awful. Tacking was awful. Trimming her feet was awful. She wouldn't stand at all from a mounting block so I barely rode her because there was never anyone there to help hold. While on rides, she acted like the baby that she was- nervous. Health-wise, she was perfect, but I couldn't get a grip on the constant behavioral issues. No one helped me. They just shook their heads and said "She'll grow out of it eventually." While being asked to do gait transitions, she started to buck. I had had it. My spouse was not keen on me getting a horse to begin with due to the financial commitment, we were fighting constantly over the horse, and the fact that my safety was in constant jeopardy made me realize I made a big and very expensive mistake. I no longer looked forward to seeing my horse. I dreaded it. After 3 months, I sold her at a significant financial loss. It was the best decision I could have made in the situation. I learned very hard lessons, and truth be told, I'm still a bit bitter about it because I was so alone in the whole process and I tried so hard to do the right thing only to still fail. If there's any good news though, it's that I learned what age horse I needed, what experience, and what questions to ask. I had a better eye to recognize BS in sales videos. I now have 2 wonderful horses who are a great fit for our family. I'm sorry it's been such a health saga with Black Jack. I hope you get some relief soon!

Yes I have to say and agree, the person who sold and recomemeded you Jack knew he had issues. Good to see you have moved out of there and re think who to trust and rely on. You both deserve qualitity time together, it's been one thing after another! I hope you didn't get ripped off on the purchase price. It would be interesting to find out about Jacks history

Dawn, this isn’t a mistake on your part…you did a PPE..and every one of us with horse fever jump on that “dream horse”… we just do. I blame the seller…the seller was selling BJ because of these issues he was WELL AWARE OF….trust me, these are issues that didn’t happen overnight. I have to wonder if he was on Bute when the PPE was done to mask the pain. I also wonder how BJ was being used by previous owner(s). Being in Texas I’m curious if he was a ranch horse in a previous life and worked very hard. He has a roached mane…which often is done with ranch horses they rope off of. So many questions about his background. My heart goes out to you. Your first experience with your horse should be filled with positive achievements. I am sorry

How long had the pads been on once you had him trot? Did your vet do a flexion test during your PPE? Try not to feel too discouraged (I know it's hard). The people who sold him to you should have disclosed all this before you bought him. One doesn't put pads on a horse's feet for fun there is an underlying cause. He seems like such a nice horse and you talk about him with such admiration that I feel you didn't make a mistake. Hopefully, once he gets used to the pads again things will settle down enough that you can lightly ride and do simple trail rides.

Did you get a pre purchase exam? Have your vet out to examine him first.Get xrays of his front hooves.Then work with your farrier. There are drugs as well that might make your horse more comfortable.Horses are expensive and heath issues do arise.As a beginner, you need experienced, knowledgeable horse people to guide you.I would ask your vet to recommend a quality boarding facility in your area.Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Honestly your trainer should have recognized if your horse was lame.To me safely is the priority. If your horse is perfectly safe for you as a beginner to ride then he is probably worth the expense. Good luck!!!By the way, never trust people selling horses.

Is the horse used to drinking that water specifically in that pasture? Horses can be fussy with unfamiliar sources of water. Some horses won’t drink away from “home.” These horses require very close monitoring when traveling or changing barns. Horses don’t “mind” dirty water (they love creeks and ponds they’re familiar w) I’d be really concerned if the horse was used to drinking this water and randomly is refusing to do so. That water is nasty and it’s fair to expect better quality for your animal.

You should not let a horse drink if hes all sweaty , untack him and walk him around until he's dry and then let him drink

Honestly this poor horse looks lame in both front feet. He's shuffling and landing toe first indicating possible heel pain. It could be the old flexor tendon injury playing up. He cant trot cos he's sore. Agree you need full workup at equine hospital, xrays, nerve blocks, MRI scan. The water is disgusting and unacceptable. You need experientced help, I think the seller has really done you over. Poor horse and poor you.

My horse was lazy and when she wanted to go home, she'd drag her feet and trip to scare me so i would turn around and go home.... One time she really tripped and almost fell on me. She was a 17.2hh draft horse. I WAS scared. But we did not turn around. She never tripped after that.

The water is gross! 🤢 I, like others, also wonder if he was on Bute for the ppe. Something I learned too late, was during the ppe, have your vet draw blood. You don’t have to get it tested if you decide not to buy the horse you’re looking at, but now I’ve discovered that having the blood drawn usually works like truth serum, suddenly the seller steps up and confesses things. And you can always have the vet run the blood test later. Also, I’m surprised that during your ppe your vet didn’t insist on hoof testers, but maybe that was discussed and I didn’t catch it. The tripping, could be a lot of things, I had a TWH that’d I’d owned for many years that suddenly started tripping, right front, turned out to be arthritis and it was very easily managed. Don’t beat yourself up over your purchase, he sounds like a nice gelding. Even after 40+ years owning horses I still question my logic sometimes 😂, most recently I paid $500 for an emaciated, senior gelding with skin problems, soundness problems…ALL the problems really. Bought him from two young guys who were obviously trying to fool me, the rascals. Spent tons on vet bills when more problems surfaced, probably about 5Xs more than what I paid for him. He eventually died. But, he was the best, sweetest horse and I’d do it all over again. 🥹 Every horse can teach you something. Wishing you & Black Jack all the best! 😊 🐴

Just remember none of this is the horse’s fault. Sounds like a convergence of reactions to a field that is not properly maintained, clic n response to maybe the heat, maybe he pasture, his food, who know? You would think the farrier would find out why the pads a year ago, and give you better guidance than to take it off. Strange at the very least. How long after his feet were done did he trip? Maybe long toes and overdue shoeing? I don’t know. I’m had been riding for over 2 ears before getting my first horse but I relied on my trainer and the barn manager for every little thing and they were very helpful. Bi also started reading books about horses, tack, shoeing, physiology, etc. every free minute I had. There is a lot to learn. Horses are very fragile, some more than others. How old is he, BTW, just curious. The one positive about all these events is that you are getting a crash course in the trials of horse ownership. Clean water ( no algae) and a properly maintained pasture are also important. I’ve had 5 horses throughout my life, all dead now except 1 and I no longer ride. I made it my mission on how to keep horses well and happy as well as how to ride well so as not to be a burden to my horse. I takes time and patience. Sometimes problems come together like they did for you. If you make sure you get to the bottom of why they happened and how to fix it you will be learning valuable lessons. As frustrating these are for you just imagine how unpleasant they are for your horse. I am 80 now but all the time I spent with my horses were the best times I had, spent in the best company. Worth all the worry, work and money. I think you are conscientious and loving and you’ll find the same is true for you. Keep us posted and hang in there.

Lack of water is a cause of colic. Clean water spray be available at all times.Ideally quality hay should also be available at all times.

Can you return him and get your money back? Ask a horse lawyer to help I am from Sweden, i got in a similar situation. Got a horse in march 2024, the horse seller hide from me that horse was lame on some endurance training she had just a week before i met the horse. The horse was sour on their stable, gpt better at my stable but sour when i wanted to go up in saddle. Relictant to move forward. In may she started showing lameness that came and went. 19 june i took her to clinic and xrayed and they discovered arthritis in front feet locks. Inflammation. I hired a horse lawyer and seems that soon i might get most of my money back and get the horse picked up from my stable

Move barns. You’re going to be the best owner he could have if you actually give him the help he needed prior to you owning him. If he’s a good boy he’s worth it, you will create a horse worth a million bucks because most people don’t do right by horses. You know better tho because he’s yours so you will be able to tell it’s off because no one else has prob laid that much attention to him. Horses have something wrong with them a couple times a year 🤣 I think this is why so many people have two horses. Cause one always has something 🤣

unless a wild animal chooses to live and be in your company and have the freedom to leave anytime and everytime it wants to, humans are a mistake . it shouldnt be the humans choice
