In this video I am trying to increase the level of sheen on my beautiful les paul style kit from Precision Guitar Kits. I have a very nice hard wax oil finish from Maximum Guitar Works on the kit right now, and I'm trying to buff it up a bit with a wool pad, and then eventually with some compound from Oxford Supply. I think I may have messed it up though. What do you think?

Hey Brad this is Mike (ASA Mike) the key to the SOS is build, build, build with #8. It has no wax and more solids. Then put #7 on for several coats. It has the wax in it. I set it with white Diamond bar polish on a wheel, a mild friction polish so to speak. If you aren’t sure if its built up enough, try the white Diamond first on a small area and finish with a an extra soft wax buff. I use the the Bealle Wood buff wheels and bar polish. The great thing is it’s so forgiving you can always add more to get where you want to go. It will get to a nice satin sheen.

Sand it all back until just slightly green figure remains, then spray green tinted lacquer shader to get the color even, then clear coat gloss.

I saw a furniture video where to get a little more gloss they used another odies product over top the hard wax. You might try that on a sample piece. Really nice looking axe!

Blotchy. You can see the natural wood color near the control knob area up towards where a pick guard would be. Love the color though!

my own les paul kit build (from solo guitars) is taking about as long, mostly due to my own incompetence, so don't feel bad. yours looks a hundred times better than mine though.

At this point I'd really mask up the nice back and edges and neck for protection, they look great. Then sand back the top again, leaving some of your green, seal it when it's even, then tint more spray color back over it, maybe even fog a bit of a burst or fade from the edges to being brighter in the middle up on the arch of the top. Then clear it with poly or lacquer and polish/buff to the gloss you want. Personally I'd tint it more toward forest or olive green, something darker, with your bright green as an undertone. Of course you'd have to touch up the face of the headstock too. Or paint it black. Just some ideas, carry on Brad!

IMHO I'd sand it back some to try to get an even colour and then assess it at that point. Maybe a burst, even?

I've got a few builds under my belt now and the 1st one I did was for Ed King, He was picky when it came to guitars and he loved it. The last build I done was also a precision guitars kit, close to 2K the way it was ordered for just the neck and body alone. The wood wasn't dried and gave me nightmarish finish problems that took a year to complete due to that and neck fitment that sucked. I've build 3 of their kits now and will never buy anything from them ever again.. I could have bought a real Gibson LP or 2 for the price that was paid for their kit that sucked.

If you're getting green bleeding, that means you're down to stained wood. I guess you should put another coat or 2 of finish and, if you wanna make it shine a little more, maybe apply some regular wax like Renaissance.

I really do like that green. You'll have to go gold hardware (or maybe black/chrome black). Chrome is not going to pop with that finish. You should also drop a Bigsby on it too. They look awesome on a Les Paul. Drop some pickups in and you're set. I just bought some gold foil pickups which sound awesome. Also have all the parts for a Strat build. It will be Blade themed. Black and Red with Hotblade pickups (see what I did there?) and all black hardware (including locking tuners). Thinking of also doing a custom neck inlay as well. Maybe brass bullet shell casings as fret markers and a red glow in the dark graphic. Should look cool.

More green and a little more gloss. Could try a high shine car polish designed to be hand rubbed only to prevent removal of the green dye. Then hit it (metaphorically speaking) with one of those quick car show room shine spray detailer products. The ones you just basically spray on and wipe off, designed to leave a showroom shine on cars. I did that to my 2013 stock mat black SG. It increased the glossiness of the matt by a few levels.

Brad, I would say add darker green and do a green burst. Big D did a body like that and it looked awesome. In fact, I have a LP Solo guitar that I am going to do a green burst. Another thought would be to finish with Tru-Oil or shellac. Great videos and thank you for the inspiration and insights.

Perhaps because it’s constructed mostly with that part up. Or perhaps because “drop top” sounds better than “drop front”. Or would you call it the face? Short answer is I have no idea.

I love the top color, I don't love the matte finish but that's just me. I'm actually doing one now that's very similar with green and spalted maple. In fact, I was thinking of using the 2K clear on mine for that super glossy finish. I would love your thoughts on that? Keep up the good work. I always love your videos.

If you’re looking for a strong high gloss finish the 2K is often the way to go. I think you’re on the right track.

Doesnt look half as bad as you think. Im sitting here trying to figure out how to get air bubbles out of a maple top from a Solo LP kit that just came in. You can press the bubbles in like keys on a keyboard 😮

I hate it when that happens. They have good customer service in case you need to return it, but you could probably inject some thin super glue under there if there’s a small hole and then press down until it sets a bit.

From the video footage, it seems to still match the headstock very well. It's your guitar, so I will obviously leave the call up to you. My opinion is go back over it with the wax and call it a day. Get some good wax build up for protection, the guitar still looks awesome! Love the color!

@Brad Angove I actually have a question about nitrocellulose lacquer too. I just purchased a PRS Tremonti with Nitro finish. Have you ever tested ceramic or graphene coating on a cured nitro finish? I know that some automotive finishing technology crosses over into guitar finishing, but I'm afraid to used a brand new PRS as a test subject. Thanks for any advice in advance! You make amazing experimental and innovative content! Keep crushing it!

@Brad Angove the products I use on my vehicles are made by Turtle Wax. Their Hybrid Solutions Ceramic coating and Graphene coating are the ones I was considering, and are widely available at any auto parts store and Walmart.

I haven’t tried those at all actually. I was under the impression that ceramic coatings were both expensive and difficult to acquire outside of professional automotive refinishing. I wouldn’t test that on a new prs. If anything just do a test piece with some nitrocellulose lacquer and then try it. I don’t know enough about the ceramics to theorize about whether it would work.

@Brad Angove Thanks for your honesty and input! Might be a good quick video idea for you as well. Project Farm on KZfaq did a side by side comparison of ceramic coatings both cheap and expensive. Sorry for the spoiler, but the product by Turtle Wax was not only the cheapest but also came out on top of the competition. Cheap and effective. I'll certainly take your advice, and will not be trying it on a new PRS. Thanks a ton Brad, you're the best!

@Brad Angove No way your good . The beauty of the varnish is you can wash it off if you dont like what you have , the downside is dry time . We're talking a thin ,thin finish!

Brad you are the man. I love that guitar. Would it not have served you to use some carnauba or microcrystalline wax on that body to gloss it up? I am not claiming to know this, I'm curious. I use that technique on Osmo hard wax oil and it works a charm. No compound, just Briwax wax on a wool pad. I've used the SOS as well and while I like it, I don't think it performs as well as Osmo, mainly because Osmo is available in 3 sheens: Matte, Satin and Gloss. It's the best oil finish I've used out of at least 10 different ones!! Thank you for everything you've taught me, without what I've learned from you, I wouldn't know what works and what sucks!!! Why not test on a small area like the headstock? Imo, it needs to be darkened a little since it kinda looks blotchy. Could just be the camera/lighting though.

Curves behave differently than flat surfaces, so that’s one aspect of why I don’t test techniques on headstock (although I do test colors on them). Also, because it’s for a video the body seemed like a better piece to work on. Luckily with these finishes it’s easy to correct/rework.

I think it looks good as is. It looks like a custom shop color I saw online a little while ago. Sweet. I just finished 4 coats of nitro on my sons bass. I feel like I can still see wood grain. They were pretty thin coats. How many coats would be enough. I used the Mohawk nitro.

Yeah. But I think I chose a poor product for the filler probably got lazy on the sanding too. Lesson learned.

You may want to sand back a bit and do a bit more work with the sealer before moving on to your color/clear if you’re getting wood grain coming through.

Hi Brad! From the footage I didn't see that you would need to add stain. However regardless of your experiment, I think that it lacks the tiny white line of the binding visible when looking at the front of the body. Did the polishing attempt maybe green up the line? Hard to tell from the footage, though. Cheers V! BTW: Equipment question: does it make a difference generally to use a polisher vs. an orbital sander with the same pads?

Thanks; it never had the line from the front. I only did the natural binding look on the sides. The polisher is more powerful, so it works better on harder clears. For softer finishes like lacquer etc. it doesn’t make much difference.

It’s hard to tell - is there sort of a 3D effect to the grain? If not , I’d probably go darker. I’m looking to do something similar but I want to go high gloss so I’m going nitro. I haven’t made up my mind yet if I’m going to go green or blue yet. I’ve tried several dye / stains and I think the Mohawk dyes work the best. Thank you for all the help.

@@BradAngove Don't feel bad. I built a beautiful Regency Purple 335 StewMac kit recently. StewMac must like it because they've used it twice in their flyers. However, getting the purple right was a nightmare. It was only on the third attempt it revealed the glorious tone I had hoped for. Mind you, everything I do is experimental so I expect to mess up occasionally.

Not that it is important, Brad. You might like to know, the person you are conversing with is not Anna Stafford, but Byron, her husband. She has the Google account so KZfaq thinks I am she. I am an English immigrant to the US and a lifetime professional musician and "hobbyist" Luthier. The guitars and their cases are taking over my house (not small). Sad to say, I am losing my sight. My current 12-string Scratch Build may be my last. God but I hate that. Thanks anyway.
