Did I Waste $5000 on Engine Parts? More Horsepower & MPGs? (Part 1)

Did I waste $5,000 upgrading my old pickup or should I have spent that money on a new pickup? Before the upgrades, the truck accelerated from 0-60 in 17.08 seconds. Towing 10,000 pounds, the truck accelerated from 0-60 in over 45 seconds. Also, the truck is unable to hold highway speed towing 10,000 pounds climbing a 3% grade.
I requested a collaboration with Power Driven Diesel in Cedar City, Utah. A big “thank you” to Will, Todd, Myer, Griffith, Reed, Levi, Pedro, and the rest of the team at Power Driven Diesel for their role in this review. In part 1 of 2, I travel out to Power Driven Diesel for the upgrades to the engine. I do not accept sponsorships and I paid for all of the parts, fluids, etc used to upgrade the engine. In part 2, I rebuild the transmission. I paid for all of the parts used to upgrade the transmission.
I do not receive any form of commission or financial benefit from the sale of Power Driven Diesel parts. Here are the links to the parts I purchased for the upgrades. I used 055 delivery valves and not the 025 listed in the engine upgrade kit. I highly recommend calling Power Driven Diesel’s customer support team to discuss upgrades. They are friendly and very helpful.

I really appreciate the focus on fuel efficiency and clean running diesel, amazing seeing 0 soot come out while on the dyno. I hate seeing all these clowns with their diesels that are poorly tuned, rolling coal and have shit fuel efficiency with less power. Awesome video and amazing gains!

Agreed. I had to properly calculate and size my full exhaust properly for the exhaust shop. Everyone just comes in and wants 3" pipes. I explained if I was going true dual with true x-pipe I don't need that and to keep the stock size size. I also installed race converters. My case was gasoline The black diesel guys don't realize that all the coming out of the exhaust was also in the cylinder, all that soot does get into the oil and ruins the engine faster. Look up the oil change intervals of diesel vs gasoline vs CNG

@@ProjectFarm They are a great expansion to your style of investigating topics, evaluating them, and helping us learn alongside you. The only constructive criticism I can offer is to vary up your transition/explanatory phrase for scene cuts. There was a lot of "let's . let's . let's " that wouldn't sound as artificially punctuated with a script like "let's letting us . Next, the " or, if the shop was doing the work and you were describing their work "they first before and ". In your typical comparison videos, that kind of word repetition doesn't typically develop because instead of "let's", you usually are naming the product under test.

When you think about it, 5k for a 50% power boost is actually quite a bargain. People often spend more than that simply to gain 20 or 30 hp. Love to see you doing engine stuff on the channel again, please dont ever be afraid of thinking outside the box with these videos, they are so spectacular. Id suggest targeting the farmabago next for engine//mod videos. It would be awesome next to the cummins videos.

not knocking this, but that's 5k in parts. best have another 10k to spend to do this, without the trans. it's closer to 20k when all is said and done. so it's 25k. now i didn't work on diesel engines, but built my fair share of hot rods. sure i could get 550 horse out of a 350 by spending 5k. but i did all work. labor ain't free. other than that? this guy is good.

It's a matter of semantics, "over-engineered" can mean it's designed such that it is overbuilt. There are valid reasons for building a lightly stressed engine that produces much less power than it's cable of, longevity. @@giggiddypower driven diesel just did a teardown video of a 600hp 12 valve cummins that was a daily driven truck to see what the effects were. There was almost no visible wear. The rod bearings were all perfect but one, had a very slight line. Id say that could be due to a grain of sand or small metal fragment during assembly.

A masterful video to prove that a turbo upgrade alone is not what improves the performance of an vehicle, a HUGE misconception! Thank you very much for breaking down the entire process, Todd! If you’re enjoying these kinds of tests and more folks than myself show interest in improving a belt-driven, carbureted engine, I’d absolutely love to see it. Take care!
@shona5512
@shona5512 7 ай бұрын
It's entirely dependent on the engine. Many of the cars I have just required a turbo upgrade to make more power. Obviously, you will have to tune it again to get more power out of the turbo, but if your car is capable of it, your factory injectors and intercooler are enough to make a large difference in power. However, if you want to get the absolute most out of your turbo upgrade, you're best to upgrade other components as well. So basically, you can improve performance with just a turbo upgrade, but you won't be able to get the figures that the turbo is rated for, without other upgrades.
@devdecker7812

Well , smaller engines get less effect just from turbo . Bigger engines get a bigger boost because of percentage
@Demoralized88
@Demoralized88 7 ай бұрын
You don't even need a new Turbo anymore - tunes just up the boost from stock. Modern DOHC Turbo engines will very much improve with a little more boost. Older pushrod and 2v Diesels are so flow-restricted that they can't make much more without greatly improving head flow and raising the RPMs to take advantage of it.
