Mr Dasgupta passed away earlier this year, at the ripe age of 82. I found his book at the local library and was intrigued by it, after i was done with the book i decided to look him up on the internet, in order to hear the tales from the man himself and found myself a bit saddened on finding out that he was no more.

This book 50 years after the earth shaking event of 1971 is like a Primary School Teacher writing World War History in 2050 !!! All that he claims is quite interesting !!! Nicely peppered for encouraging Sales ...... Simplistic, BUT that is my view !!! Finally there is nothing to gain if the reader does not have any insight into LtGen Sagat Singh's audacious generalship during 1971. He maybe well be the actual unsung Hero of 1971 - Sagat A Talent for War !!!

There's no animosity amongst the general public of both the communities against each other ! They want to live in peace and harmony ! It was the politicians - on both sides of the divide - who had failed us ! The sequence of events in the lndian History leading to the partition will amply testify to this historical fact !

It's a stark reality ! Truth hurts and hurts very deep, indeed ! How right was Lao Tzu in his assessment in saying - "Truth is not always beautiful nor beautiful words the truth !" The answer is very much implicit in the narrative itself ! What's absolutely required is - proper application of mind ! However, it's an altogether different issue, if someone feigns ignorance intentionally !

People killed people in the partition riots. Man inherits instincts of fear of unknown from animals. Politicians have a choice to make - whether to exploit that fear or to cure it. People have a choice to make - fall for the fear psychosis or tricks played by politicians. Blaming politicians without admitting and addressing the deep seated suspicion and fear people have towards each other usually has disastrous consequences.

Pakistan is not going to give us back PoK through talks! It is also clear that no country is going to help us to get back PoK. A good book, most students of history in the subcontinent would like to read. In my considered view Indra Gandhi decision to invade East Pak in 1971 was primarily not to create BD but to defeat Pak army already under lot of International pressure to withdraw from East Pak and would have happened with 3-4 months even without Indian attack. This decision by Indra appeared more guided by her animosity towards Pakistan a gain local political support but certainly not a strategic move as it made Pak permanent enemy of India, because of its humiliation and a deep spirit of revenge in their army and general public. Resultantly situation in Kashmir is much worse and anti India than it was in 1971 and the valley is being held by Indian state by force with over half a million troops. Likewise BD too is now too close to China which has occupied over 1000 KM of Indian territory. Hence with the strong possibility of 2 fronts war again after winning an unavoidable war 50 years ago infact can best be described as like " Winning a battle but loosing the war" Had India not attacked East Pak and humiliated a besieged Pak army, there was a greater chance of peace by now between the 2 countries, a dream which perhaps would be dream for another 50 years until India gives freedom to Kashmir through a plebiscite and not the war which most certainly happen on 2 fronts in the next 4-5 years as predicted by few well respected Indian political & military analysts.

If they are happy and agree with it, how is it wrong? Jammu& Kashmir is land of Kashmiri people and they should have right over their land. Pakistan respected decision of people of Junagarh to join india even after the ruler of Junagarh signed accession to Pakistan. Would you indians have approved if Pakistani government had treated hindus of Junagarh the way india is treating muslims of jammu & Kashmir?

The seeds of today's politics are in 1971. India has been looser since long and the same continued. Today's problem of Bangladeshi refuses started in 1971 and what's more people of India paid tax by refugees ticket. During that period Bangladeshi Muslims had scattered in small groups in almost all major cities. And with the help of locals and congress they established and prosperoured. Bangladeshi Muslims have been main force behind CAA. Second is Kashmir..before 1971 war Kashmir was not in lime light as all the leaders of Pakistan have started vigorously this issue. Perhaps India would have been in better position economically, politically and communally. The issues which BJP has been coined..the root cause is 1971 war i.e. illegal migrants and Kashmir. Economically India had suffered a lot. Since then USA has been openly started anti India stand on international level.

Here is the proof from shri Vajpayee himself that he never called her Durga. But youbwould still propogate stories that he indeed call. That given the fact now, who will believe that Indira has already decided about invading in November and Sam Manekshaw made stories that he persuaded Indira and so on.....

Not much light thrown. Only repeatedly utterances of "Absolutely" or "Precisely" in response to longish statements made by Karan Thapar. No reference to the sources for claims that no plans were needed or made for operations in the Western sector. If the plan was to invade and occupy Dhaka, why did we labour on the point of self defence in the wake air attacks by Pakistan? Again, the interview does not shed light on Soviet pressure for quick end to war after the GA vote or about the diplomatic missteps in the UN. Sorry to say, the usual interrogative Karan Thapar is sorely missing in this episode.

@@soumenpanda8460 Bangladesh was not my own making. Anyway, 90,000 were captured, not all military, it was humiliating for the Pakistanis and still is. However, it showed them the way to go nuclear. Now, they are a pain in your neck, will remain till you come to terms with what India has done to them in Bangladesh. Anyways, neither India is the same powerful country as it was and nor Pakistan is a weak country the way it was in the 70s. What do you think, hundreds of thousands of Indian security personnel doing duty in Kashmir are normal people now? They are not, these men will go back to their villages and city, they are done just like Americans came back from Vietnam and Afghanistan recently. Illegitimate occupation has a cost, I am afraid, India may disintegrate as a country. Its never been a country in the first place, historically princely states in that geographical reality. However, it's a five thousand years old civilization, it hurts to see it going to waste under the hard-line Hindu government. You Indians need to put your act together and come to terms with the realities of the day, US is not going to fight your war against China, Pakistan is also not a walkover.

Regarding Kashmir, I believe occupations of Pakistan too is deemed illegal. Chinese challenge is real and it's a civilisational one as much as for India as for Pakistan. Remember your theocracy stands in opposition to the godless communists, the uligur experience must have made it clear now. @@soumenpanda8460 You are right about the shared history. We can't do anything about the 100 years old realities or 4000 thousand years old civilization, the problem as of today is that China has been able to eliminate poverty. They have resources to engage with adventures and misadventures with USA, Taiwan or Glawan for that matter. The rest of the region, as you have spelled out still faces profound challenges. This region needs peace and stability to prosper. India has to avoid a military conflict with China, it is madness otherwise. Indian people are very hardworking, they don't deserve a useless conflict, India should spend money on education, infrastructure, R&D to achieve technological breakthroughs. Spending money on French fighter planes and Russian missiles is not what the people of India need. Indians are very capable, they can come up with technology that can enhance health, increase life expectancy, improve AI, and curtail environmental challenges. Being stuck with teaching a lesson to Pakistanis or facing China is not a wise thing to do. Giving technology to neighbouring countries, helping them learn and learning from their experience is the way to progress, creating and sharing opportunities among all the people that live here.

@@zaffazad4040 China eliminated people too.... Uplifting people from a crisis and eliminating people to hide the crisis is not the path indian took.... We successfully uplifted a major proportion of our population from poverty, I agree the past few years we aren't performing good. But trust me this India you are witnessing at present is but an abberation from the normal, we will certainly win over this temporary dip.... Regarding China, better be careful the dragon has a huge appetite, the jets is to tame it's fangs from spreading! Remember the gujral doctrine, and we are still committed to no first use policy, I hope going nuclear gives great powers but even greater responsibilities which India has certainly demonstrated in its policy of restraint, a lesson which Pakistan must emulate for confidence building. Our defence imperatives are necessary for an aspiring superpower . We are also equally committed to indegenisation of our defence technologies, the LCA tejas, Howitzer are proof of that. We are catching up. I know despite our politics, we civilians don't hate each other, we share the same food, culture, bigotry, minority hatred etc. I just hope the subcontinent prospers in the future and peace prevails. Imagine all the money spent on defence architecture in the subcontinent by India, pakistan, bangladesh combined being utilized to fight poverty, disease, ignorance and illiteracy, a new dawn of civilisational excellence would emerge which can even put the Western nations to shame. However, the power politics would just push this as wishful thinking of a privileged boy wasting his time on KZfaq comments with a pakistani.
