That is really a great and complete review. I just purchased a Kobo Libra Colour two days ago. , but when I saw it compare to the Pocketbook Era Colour, I first felt I got the wrong ereader. But you also explained we can tweak the colour settings in developer mode, and I saw much improvement. The colours are actually more faithful on the Kobo Libra Colour than on the Pocketbook, although more washed out.

Yeah, definitely. Kobo did a great job with color palette accuracy and I suspect that was the main goal with how they implemented it. I still appriciate that the dev-settings allow for some adjustments though. In the end color saturation mostly really comes down to software with the current generation color ereaders.

For comic reading, I manually adjust the page to fit the screen and leave it that way so I don't have to scroll every time I turn to the next page

Yes, it's totally fine using it this way - I just think it would be better to have the option to zoom in just a bit and being able to move the viewport with a tap like on Boox and PocketBook.

For comics I would like to have the same functionality as the kindles have. The possibility to zoom in the Individual tiles with a double click would be great

Hello, amazing reviews. I went through some reviews and comments. It seems Kobo Libra Color matches my choice. I mainly pdf reading with some graphical charts or photos, making notes on it, and sometimes downloading files from the Internet. Does the Libra Color work great on browsing? Thanks.

Thanks! :) Unfortunately the web browser on Kobo ereaders isn't very good. I'd even say it's actually the worst of all current E-Ink devices. If browsing the web is important to you, I'd recommend checking out Boox or PocketBook devices.

I wouldn't recommend the Kobo Libra Colour for PDF and browsing. Imho it's actually the worst you can get for those specific applications. The browser is especially bad compared to many others. I'd say Boox is best for PDF-files and browsing, PocketBook takes the second place, with easier handling but less options.

Would you recommend the pocketbook era color over the kobo libra color?

It depends on what you primarily want to do and expect from the device. I'd say you can't really go wrong with either one, it just depends on what you need more. Both have strengths and flaws: - The PocketBook Era Color is better for Comics and PDFs (more viewing modes), as well as audiobooks. It also has better customization options and doesn't need an account (check out my review for more info on that). - The Kobo Libra Color has the (slightly) better frontlight, and much better note taking with the stylus support.

@@kenlemottee7720 Yes, sorry I wasn't clear. I meant the Era Colour is better for audiobooks because you can use sideloaded audiobooks easier and it has a built-in speaker.

Imho, yes, the Era Color is better for PDFs and comics, simply because the viewing modes work are more intuitive. But tbh I'd go with the InkPad Color 3, which has a bit more screen estate and the better frontlight.

I've only ever owned a non-backlit Kindle but gave it away years ago. I'm ready to get back into an e-reader and I'm concerned about the darker screen and battery life anxiety. What's the battery life like when compared to the BW Kobo? Do you always use the backlight when reading, even on the BW model?

Personally I use the frontlight of BW ereaders also during the day. But just enough so the screen background is a bit whiter. So I don't fully dial up the light. That also works well for color E-Ink devices, the only thing that's worse in this case is the grainier screen compared to B&W displays. Battery life really depends on the model. Some BW Kobo models have poor battery life because of the chipset (Kobo Sage) others are much better (Kobo Libra 2). Oddly enough, I do not have “developer options” on my kobo colour? It just says firmware information instead of

I didn't mention it in the video, but you have to enable the developer options first. Go to the homescreen and use the search function to look for "devmodeon" (without the quotation marks). Than go to the settings and the developers options should be available.

I'd like to know what's going on with the Libra black and white version. It makes sense that kobo would refresh the Libra 2 with a new Carta 1300 display, as they have done with the Clara B&W. The fact that the Libra 2 has been sold out on the Kobo website for some time would also point to a coming refresh. But why did they not release it along with all the other recent ereaders? If there has been a delay in production then why not give an update and say when it can be expected? Maybe that isn't the plan at all. Maybe they want to force everyone who wants a Libra to get the colour version. But then why pursue a completely different strategy when it comes to the Clara? It makes no sense to me.

Agreed - releasing an Clara B&W and not a Libra 3/B&W is a weird choice. Maybe they think the market for more expensive 7" ereaders is saturated and people won't upgrade from an Oasis or Libra 2, so they just went for the Libra Colour.

@@ChalidRaqami Yes perhaps. I really hope they do release a Libra B&W. Clarity and contrast are much more important to me than colour and I'd love to see the Carta 1300 screen in that form factor. Oh well, fingers crossed!

Yes it does have a web browser, but it's really bad. Good enough for Wikipedia, but that's essentially it. Many websites are simply broken and on top of that it's also quite slow and doesn't have any settings. Downloading the comics on a computer and then putting them on the ereader definitely is the way to go with this one. If you want to have to convenience of a useful browser, I'd recommend looking into Boox or PocketBook devices.

Browsers on ereaders have always been bad, even on Kindles. People who buy ereaders do it because they want a distraction-free device solely for reading so these companies don’t waste their time improving the browsers.

You said 5% drain an hour at 70% brightness? Mine is draining about that much at 10-20% brightness.. is this not normal?

It also depends on the content. Comic books or large PDF files will need more computing power and draw more energy. Do you have WiFi enabled? That can also draw a bit of energy, especially if the connection is bad. If the device doesn't shut off randomly, I wouldn't suspect anything wrong with the battery and it being more of a software issue. Maybe a reboot or hard reset (sync and backup everything) can help here, if the drain is too much.

I wouldn't call it a defect - or did Kobo come out and say something about that? Most asymmetrical ereaders have similar brightness/color gradients and judging by how cheap the Libra Colour is priced compared to most other 7"-8" color ereaders, my guess is they just didn't go for the high-end frontlight or more expensive QC as they did with the Libra 2.

No, Kobo offers a complete different eco system that's not compatible with Kindle. It does have its own built-in store though, so you can buy new ebooks directly on the device.
