Pretty common trope. You see, he's a fighting prodigy and has also the amazing potential of his bloodline so therefore he can become more powerful than anyone can no matter what they do. The main appeal to the character was never about that though. It was the struggles to get there. It was his personality of a veritable asshat but with a heart of gold. The way he hung out with the others and got into their situation makes dynamics I can't begin to put into a character limit here like Charlie mentions. Putting that on fast forward, it turns whatever goodness into a mishmash of confusion even the fans can only shrug their shoulders at.

My biggest gripe with it is that live actions are so afraid of downtime that builds the relationship between the characters and audience. Spirit orb, training, banter during travel to dark tournament should all slow down the narrative to hit harder at plot climaxes

As an animator, this live action has the best choreographed, executed and animated action I've seen in a very long time, the stunt and animation team are outstanding. Even in Hollywood movies, when super heroes jump and land from heights, you can easily tell they are on wire, everything feels floaty, but in YYHLA, every single move has so much weight and impact that there's no floatiness at all. It's the first time wall runs and tokusatsu air flips feel realistic and have weight and contact with surfaces, it's the best action Japan ever made.

YYH had a very stylish 90s look to it with the ramen shops and Yusuke and Kuwabara's pompadours, and Sakyo's 90s MULLET that so much potential to bring such a 90s vibe to the live action has just gone down the drain.

Yes he wanted to work on hunter hunter but he had much bigger plans for the ending of yu yu hakusho but was rushed so he couldint continue his idea. The ending wasn’t even supposed to be a tourney it was supposed to be an all out war in demon world and also fighting against koenmas dad after they find out he was allowing demons into human world/setting up disputes to justify his presence and doing shady things. He in fact almost DIED several, LITERALLY several times because the publisher kept bullying and harassing him, making him stay awake non-stop for a full week on several occasions, calling him after midnight (and angrily going to his place to yell if he didn't pick up) and forcing him to redo ENTIRE PAGES because they didn't like ONE tiny thing in the background and shit. As much as Sailor Moon is garbage, if it wasn't for his now-wife creator, he would've died. She went full aggro on the publisher, threatened them with lawsuits and a police investigation, she showed up to make him food (he only ate instant ramen, since no time for anything else), forced him to rest, helped out with drawing (mostly contouring but hey, that shit takes just as much time). In the end, he rushed the manga ending, aka, literally skipped through half the demon tournament arc, including the last fights (Yuusuke etc), as a huge FUCK YOU to the publisher. But he also set up the next arc, where Koenma investigates his daddy for being a dick and forcefully keeping the dimensions separately so he can have sole ownership of the souls and shit. He loved, and still loves it, but he's traumatized and gets flashabcks and shit whenever he tries drawing more. I wish he would've focused on YYH instead of HxH's garbage ant arc. ^^;

Stuffing so many episodes into only 5 is really the biggest problem. Doing it this well could easily have led to a second season if they hadn't botched it with the rushing. I think they could have gone through the first fight with toguro, the one he threw and then end the season with him getting "invited" to the dark tournament. Iit just makes me sad how good it could have been because it was done well for what it was, and could have been so much more.

I kinda liked it. I think what makes Yu yu hakusho special is the characters, their growth and interactions. For this to come out in the live action they needed more time. It's a real shame, it could've been something really special, if they either covered only until Rando in the 5 epidoes or had more episodes in general to shine the light on the strengths of the original. As it is right now though, it feels more like a well done recap rather than a show.

What I've always wanted isn't a live action but a remaster. I've tried to put people on to Yu Yu Hakusho but their biggest complaint is how old the animation looks making it hard for modern audiences to get into it.
@zerouan8647 ай бұрын
I also liked the live action even though it missed some of the character building moments for the main characters fighting on the: - succession arc - 4 saint beast arc - mainly the whole dark tournament arc And i'm still hoping, but i feel it wont be shown anymore, the black saga arc where sensui and his crew was. The territory system blew my mind when i was a kid hahaha

This comment will probably will get drowned out but Charlie you might want to consider watching the stage play for Yuyu Hakusho! Its close to a live action and the stage play itself was HUGELY popular in Japan. I havent watched or ventured into the series but I remember all my friends who loved the series also absolutely love the stage play adaption.

I grew up watching the anime. Now, as an adult, i introduced my girlfriend to it. We'd just gotten into the Dark Tournament arc when the live action dropped so we both watched it together. They totally spoiled, i think, the Spirit Orb and that Toguro and Genkai knew eachother so she was like "Whaaaat!?" Totally didn't see that coming. So far, we both enjoyed the live action, but its such a bummer that they skipped through so much!

Netflix hasnt ever actually ruined anything, aside from cancelling shows on a cliffhanger. You listen to too many idiots on twitter (like IGN) that have no taste (Like Charlie) and dont know any better. Most of their shows are actually quite good.

Honestly, the show would have been a lot better if they didn’t even introduce any of the dark tournament elements, and they only focused on the demon bugs, and the saint beasts.

They should've just leaned in heavily on Season 1. If they were that scared it wasn't going to get a season 2 then they shouldn't have wasted their time making season 1.

I had never watched the anime and had never planned to but the live action has given me a lot of interest, I also agree that it could have used more episodes but I felt that things like the orb scene held weight just because you knew why it was happening, also the demon who is all noodly was such a joy to watch the body language and his voice acting spot on man I loved every scene with him

What kills me the most about this adaption is that outside of the heavily cut down plot issue which borderline ruins the entire experience with how much amazing character development, interactions and fights we were robbed of, the casting, the vocal performances, the sound design, the CGI and especially the fight choreography are great overall. This seriously had the potential to be the best live action adaptions ever made if they just slowed things down and focused more on the plot. Now if they get a second season all we have left is Chapter Black (which is a fantastic arc) and the Three Kings arc (much less so sadly) so they effectively put themselves into a corner. So sad :(
@Bowltoker7 ай бұрын
It’s impossible to make a live action like the show unless you want them to work on it for 20 years how do you dumb boys not understand pretty sure Charlie said something similar and mfs think it’s supposed to be the best shit ever made no… it’s supposed to be good and it was just because of the fights
@jadenbryant92837 ай бұрын
You could do the anime filler approach but considering game of thrones problem was that they couldn't use the source material yeah there screwed
@martincortez76947 ай бұрын
I think if they get more seasons they can redeem the dark tournament arc by doing another tournament like they do in the end of the three kings arc there is even room for creative liberties since we didn't see what happened in that tournament

Charlie's opinion on the live action is basically the inner voice in my head while watching the show. I loved yu yu hakusho and watched it dubbed by animax as a kid so many times, to rewatching in japanese as an adult. It was good till ep 4, I really wished they did an original ending the live action instead of just played out the first toguro vs yusuke fight with elder toguro. But they had to make it all goofy and genkai giving out her spirit wave orb like its furniture on Craigslist.
@robinchirps17757 ай бұрын
I know it wouldn’t have been exciting, but I think they could have done these 5 episodes just as the yusuke ghost arc. It’s longer in the manga and they could’ve focused more on those side stories, or even just do the 6-episode arc of the original. That could’ve been easy and fun. But Yu Yu Hakusho IS an action anime and known for that, so, I guess it was just an impossibility to focus on the story where there’s not a lot of fighting.
