Did our livestock water survive 25 below! By plumbing the pond inlet pipe into the center of the 400 gallon tank, our water supply line does not freeze. We chop off the ice in the morning and cattle keep it open all day long. For more tips on grazing, check out my books on our website: greenpasturesfarm.net/books/

These two young men are learning so much , what a tremendous internship to be able to pick the minds of Greg and Jan who I realize is filled with an abundance of farming information as well ... It’s like playing back up quarterback to Tom Brady .. That guy if he asks questions and keeps his eyes and ears open is gonna benefit so greatly from spending all their time around a guy or gal ( Jan ) who is at the top of his profession

I am 69 years old and my grandfather always put a south and north windbreaker around our cattle tank plus some roof. Then when UT was starting to freeze we thru fresh manure around about half of the sides. When you get manure at the right stage it will produce heat. And if cattle gave access to water all the time they will not rush the tank. Have to do what ever it takes. Necessity is the mother of invention.

It’s starting to warm up here now. It is sunny and 16 here. We had -30 below windchill along with more snow. Our animals did really well in the cold. The sheep properly liked this weather the most compared to the rest of our animals along with our long haired dog.

Your title had me worried for a moment but I then thought about it and realized it had to be a rhetorical question of course with the years of herding experience that you have had, if your herd could not take the cold I would be astonished. Minus 25 is over minus 31 degrees celsius both numbers are just too cold for comfort with or without the chill factor! I am glad that you were able to film without bare hands!. Glad to see you three out and about , oh, I wish a good night to the four of you

@@vm3166 he said wind chill once, but wind chill is not a temperature, it is an approximation of how cold the wind makes you feel, the wind can increase penetration and evaporation essentially robbing more heat, but that effect discontinued when the wind is blocked with out changing the actual temperature.

Mr. Judy, Thank you for your channel, your willingness to help others and your example. I am interested in trying to replicate your methods in North Texas and want to know if you have any mentors or contacts in this area. I don't see a lot of Fescue in this area and it may not be needed given our more moderate temperatures (current winter storm being a 100 year exception). I am contemplating a career change into Ranching, raising beef cattle and like most of what you do but am just starting my research and reading. Any help (other than your books that are already on my list) that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Regards

@gregjudyregenerativerancher

The ice can form on top of the float from cows drinking. The float gets heavier and let's more water rise up higher in the tank than where it should be. This can make the tank overflow onto the ground, ice River is formed on the ground.

If cattle are grazing stockpile in wet snow, they don't drink much water. If they are on 100% hay, they need a good water source. The colder it is, they drink less water.

Ice floats and will not sink your float; also you might invest in a pitch fork for throwing ice.

If ice freezes on top of the float from cattle dripping water on it while drinking, it does weight your float down. We use neoprene gloves for removing the 4 foot pieces of ice, better control than using a pitchfork.
