Also, if you record someone saying Paul McCartney and reverse it, it says Ian Iachimoe. Ian Iachamoe is the name signed at the bottom of the lyric sheet for Paperback writer. And also in a few strange ads in the International Times. I agree, I'm sure he could have figured out the fake mustache part.

Aleister Crowley's book, Magick. a) Let him (The Adept) learn to write backwards, with either hand. b) Let him learn to walk backwards. c) Let him constantly watch, if convenient, cinematograph films, and listen to phonograph records, reversed, and let him so accustom him self to these that they appear natural and appreciable as whole. d) Let him practice speaking backwards: thus for "I am He" let him say, "Eh ma I." e) Let him learn to read backwards. In this it is difficult to avoid cheating one's self, as an expert reader sees a sentence at a glance. Let his disciple read aloud to him backwards, slowly at first, then more quickly. f) Of his own ingenium, let him devise other methods. This is the reason they were doing it. They even have Crowley as one of their heroes in the Pepper cover.

We used to reverse the tapes on our reel-to-reels back in the 70s inspired by the Beatles. It's really amazing how simple normal conversation can become this weird OTHER conversation when reversed. My dad heard us doing that and learned to recite 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' in reverse by reversing himself reciting it normally. Then he recorded that so we could reverse it again. It worked though he had the oddest accent.

I left a comment above about how almost if not all recordings played backwards would have supposed secret messages. Another You Tuber found messages in The Chipmunks and other pop records he backtracked. The key to it all is to let your imagination run wild and contrive meanings to what is all just gibberish.

Me and my siblings, all " budding musicians" (we all still play- at home!, LOL) did this stuff too back then. A four track reel-to-reel tape deck was a WONDERFUL, almost magical "toy" for sound experiments! Of course, we can do all this stuff and more with software (much easier), But we did have fun. As to what your dad did, I did this too! I'd say something, then reverse it then practice SAYING the reversed words. When I thought I "had it down", I'd record me saying the reversed words and reversing THAT. It's does make an odd accent, Cool as hell for BLAZED 16-year-old in 1978. All analog!! 👍😎👍

You missed one obvious thing to do, recording yourself saying "it was a fake moustache" and then playing it backwards so we can hear how they got "Sgt Pepper's lonely" from it. They must have started with the fake moustache line and then figured out what words would sound closest to it backwards. I can imagine Paul saying "it sounds like Sgt Pepper's lonely, dunnit. What can we add after that, Sgt Pepper's lonely what?" And so, music history was made.

Great stuff, well done with the contextual manipulations! Articles like this are far more interesting than those which don't play the music of their subject! I always thought it wasn't a fake moustache on Paul on the Pepper cover, it looked so natural, and the explanation of it being bespoke accounts for it. I listened to track 1 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for comparison, and indeed, the reverse of John's vocal of the phrase 'We're Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' is 'it was a fake moustache' in all of the choruses. And this seems to be a quirk of John's vocals only - Paul singing the same phrase doesn't quite get there. Cheers!

James - I'm *loving* all this Beatles content! They are the best band of all time and it still blows my mind that they made all that incredible innovative music in just a few short years and at such a young age. Obviously I am far too young to have ever seen them play but I saw Oasis 8 times - all bar 1 of those gigs was before they did "Be Here Now" so I wouldn't consider myself a superfan like yourself (I stopped listening to them after B.H.N) but I was fanatical about them in those early years. I share my birthday with Liam and am from South Manchester so in my youth I thought that it was written in the stars 😄 and of course when I found out how much they admired The Beatles - well that was the cherry on the cake. Please continue to do more deep dives into the fan four, I'm enjoying it immensely, thank you 😊✌

Here is another clue for you all: The Anthology 3 cover. The pictures of John, George, and Ringo are all from the cover of Let It Be. The picture of Paul for Let It Be is torn away to reveal a picture of Paul from the Rubber Soul album. The original Paul. That is NOT an accident. That was done on purpose. This was a multi-million-dollar product they were releasing. Nothing was left to chance; it was all thought out ahead of time. The Beatles were STILL promoting the “Paul Is Dead” idea in the 1990’s. So you have 2 options: Paul is really dead or Paul is just playing with us. If you want to blame someone for the "Paul Is Dead" theory, blame Paul because he started it. And the McCartney 3 cover shows that Paul is STILL playing the "Paul is Dead" gimmick. What you are looking at is a DIE. It takes 2 DIE to make Dice. But there are not 2, only one. And the DIE does not show the number 4. THIS cover reads McCartney DIE, with 3 black spots for the other 3 Beatles. It's the most OBVIOUS "Paul is Dead" cover since "Let It Be".

@@JeddorianJalapeno So true, conspiracy is the act of 2 or more people conspiring together - usually for no good - and in this case we have 4 people. But it was meant as a harmless joke. Nothing bad should have came out of it. Just jokers joking around. But if you want to talk conspiracy, how about this: Jim Morrison heard the “Paul Is Dead” story and on the date of Brian Jones death, he faked his own death and split to Africa, with only him and Pam knowing. And of course the guy that saw him get on the plane, though he was not involved in the plan.

My theory on these things is that it really is gibberish, but when we "know" what it's supposed to be saying (mostly because it kinda sorta sounds like actual words), then our brains fill in the gaps and make it work. I did an experiment with an ex-girlfriend, where I had her listen to the backwards Stairway to Heaven bit. She listened to it several times and couldn't make out a thing. Then I showed her what it was supposed to say, and she could instantly hear it. And once you've got it, you always hear it. For this one, I did my own listen without looking at the words here. And I came up with something quite different. I think some of mine fit better and some of his fit better. And I definitely can't hear "it was a fake moustache." What was kind of frustrating is that in some places I could have made coherent sentences with minor adjustments Anyway, here's my take on it. Have a song. In words. With every thousand words With every thousand words With every thousand words With every house Maybe the reputation Now the song in urban when goals With every house Make it snow we never can be worse Now a song in winter With every thousand words With every thousand words With every thousand words With every thousand words With every ass What was nast Is here a suit Never sorry in wings With every house Why should we all in we were here Never sorry went with every possum.

The technique you speculate that Paul may have used in finally getting to the right phrase is quite interesting --- he would have had to have listened to the forwardly recorded phrase _"It was a fake Moustache"_ and heard something similar to _"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"_ when playing it backwards. Many years latter a variation on that technique was used by David Lynch in his series TWIN PEAKS when he had some of his actors learn backward phrases insuring that they would enunciate them in a very deliberate and careful manner so that when the _forward_ spoken _backward_ phrase was actually _reversed,_ it would come out sounding something like straight English but with a surreal dreamlike tone to it. It can be a very fun experience to play with this type of thing but it was much easier back in the days of reel to reel tapes when you could easily reverse them on the spot without any specialized software.

Thats fine that you have this opinion , mine is different. i do not find it challenging to download or operate a pc. so i can download a free audio application which is called AUDACITY fairly quickly and painlessly . this does not caus me duress , because it is 2023. it is not very hard to drag and drop an audio file , select it , then click the effects tab and select reverse . back in the day when you had you buy a HUGE back breaking reel to reel ... connect your turn table to it , transfer the album to tape , fast forward to the song , flip BOTH reels carefully to not mar or tear the tape ... is this really less challenging . i am almost 60 years old but i am aware of the fact that any free digital audio workstation software such as reaper or cuebase will let you reverse audio with a single mouse click. its not just the common one AUDACITY that does this. perhaps unlike some, i am conscious of the fact that we live in an exciting time if you are a person who actually does make music. if this is the case then you are fully aware of the fact that the good ole days are now . longing for heavy inefficient tube based tape machines, well to me -this is a cop out. in the time you took to type that i could have downloaded audacity , and performed this edit. at that point the data as non linear . Do you understand the benefit of that ? I can assure you it tromps the tube/tape effect which is also easily obtainable thru plug ins these days. i was well aware of this one btw, for a good while but it did make me laugh out-loud when i heard it . its not so funny when you understand the other side of it . this was one of crowleys commandments . he was very specific about this effect and how to train yourself to be adept in reverse speech . keep em comin pal - you are knocking it out of the park with the beatles stuff .

This is a very fascinating video, although as somebody who is blind and can't see the subtitles, the lyrics, "It was a fake moustache" sounds nothing like the clip backwards, even with the isolated vocal. The last syllable for example clearly sounds like an S sound, not sh or che. Also, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely heartsclub band is 9 syllables, and "It was a fake moustache" is 6. Still though, it is quite interesting hearing it backwards. Maybe if I knew what these backwards lyrics are meant to be, I would understand better. That being said, what you know or think can influence what you hear. Edit: I have just noticed that "Sergent Pepper's lonely" does have the same number of silables as "It was a fake moustache."

I am reminded of a quote from Nilsson’s story ‘The Point’ - “You see what you want to see and you hear what you want to hear.” Most of the ‘words’ when looked at purely phonetically are not the words many have concluded they are. It’s like the claimed “Turn me on dead man” which is supposedly “Number nine” backwards. If considered purely phonetically it sounds like “eeyon denmen”. There is no sound of the letter ‘t’ as that does not exist in the source phrase. You hear what you want to hear.

@@kensims4086: I came at it without a preconceived notion of what I was going to hear. You have better ears than I. I've found that once one gets the notion in their head (ears??) that it's hard to not hear something. This is especially true with figuring out lyrics. Fogerty does not sing 'there's a bathroom on the right' but there are many who think that's what's being sung. I've heard that John puts that phrase in now occasionally when he performs live as he finds it humorous. Thanks for your response!

Interesting the bit about raw soup, here is a passage written about Tara Browne who A Day In The Life was written about:- As a child, in his blue satin pyjamas, he would walk barefoot along the table whenever his mother, Oonagh, Lady Oranmore, would be hosting a dinner party. “Hello, I’m Tara,” he would say to the guests in turn. Once, at Claridge’s in London, he caused diners to drop their spoons when he shouted, “I asked for cold vichyssoise, not hot, you c**t” at the waiter.

This is so well done and you have me thinking it might have been done deliberately! Maybe Paul was looking for a character to lead his Lonely Hearts Club Band and went for Sgt Pepper because it created “it was a fake mustache” backwards. The whole salt and pepper story he tells about coming back on a plane with Mal Evans is just a cover story! Please keep these coming - interpreting Beatle songs and albums is always a lot of fun.

It's much more credible that "fake moustache" preceded "Sargent Pepper". When you know what was really going on in their lives, behind the scenes, much of what seems wildly imaginative is actually literal and autobiographic.

I think it is even easier than that my friend. "It was a fake mustache" is the source. Sing or say "It was a fake mustache" and then spin the tape backwards. Then come up with Lyrics to fit the wanted backward phrase. Now? Sing the invented right way lyics repeat and refine. Once you do it that way you could do the reprise in 4 hours or less. All of the music is in reverse. Did you know that? Everything. Listen to The Beatles Remix uploaded by The Beatles and it is dead obvious to me (I make records) that the entire song is backward so the forward lyrics are actually backward. Listen. The attack and decay give it away for each instrument. Zero instruments are forward on the final song. It is not hard to do and not that novel, actually ubiquitous in Classical music. Often phrases are inverted or reversed. Once you write the notes down it is simple to reverse an entire song. Ballsy is what it is, not "new" on the music side. The Lyrics are new because they require a reel to reel and playing around.

I have an explanantion that I think is a much more likelythan Paul deliberately hiding the backwards text. The Beatles had simply written and recorded Sgt. Pepper's LHCB and the reprise. We all know that George Martin and crew with the beatles had also experimented a lot directy with the tapes durng the production of the album. At some point SPLHCB was run backwards in the mixing room, at which point someone spotted the words "fake moustache". So not actively organised but it just happend so, but having noticed it, they then decided to include a fake moustache cut out and possibly even prompt all four to cultivate their moustaches for the famous cover photo.

No. In the late 60s/70s, we had record players that you could set between the speeds of 33 and 45 rpms. Then you could manually rotate the album backwards, and the sound would come out of the speaker. The Beatles themselves started this with the Paul is Dead rumors. The words "number nine" in reverse clearly becomes: Turn me on, deadman. The French words spoken by John (?) between I'm So Tired and Blackbird on the White album is clearly someone saying: Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss hm, miss him. None of these are coincidences. Think about how the Beatles had already stumbled upon backwards tapes by this point. What a laugh they must have had! All of it is completely plausaible.

i've been saying this for decades. first, you don't have to believe paul is really dead to find the "paul-is-dead" myth fascinating and fun. this myth only adds to the beatles' overall mystique. today's beatle fan, like everyone else it seems, is ridiculously fanatical. second, at least 4 "clues" had to have been purposely placed. 1) the jibberish at the end of "i'm so tired" that backwards says "paul is dead man, miss him, miss him." that was purposely put there. there's no other way to explain it. 2) the end of "strawberry fields forever" that says "i buried paul." we all lnow now lennon says "cranberry sause" but also they left phrase muddled and hard to hear. i'm sure SOMEONE among the beatles noticed what it sounded like but they purposely left it so it could be misinterpreted. 3) there's a picture in the booklet that accompanied MMT of a fish-eyed lensed scene of the cast eating at a table. when turned 45 degrees and held up to a mirror it looks like a skull. its the ONLY picture in the booklet that doesn't appear in the film. 4) if you hold a mirror halfway up onto the sgt pepper cover's drum logo there's a strange message that the beatles are now 3 and paul is no longer among them. there's no other way to explain these except that they were intentionally placed. personally, i believe it was an beatles inside joke that got out of hand that led fans to other clues that weren't intentional but purely coincidental and many more that are just silly. i always enjoyed the "paul-is-dead" myth. for one thing it demonstrates the power of fame and has social implications of mass psychosis.
