If we rely on officiating to get further into the CL, then we're approaching it all wrong. Still feeling good about the tie overall, but the referee didn't cost us the game per se, the defensive fuck ups did.

The problem with the ref applying "common sense" is where do you draw the line? A ref can make a common sense call in one match but not the other, opening up the door to bias. And mistakes often happen in games when players are put under pressure, which is absolutely an aspect of the game, so how could you make a ruling against that?

I think both things are true - Saka is looking for the contact but the contact is unavoidable. At the pace he was going at and the direction he was facing, Saka cannot avoid Neuer who just stepped to his (Neuer's) right. However, Saka is looking to ensure contact is made and leaves his leg to collide with Neuer's. This is, in my opinion, why the ref doesn't give the penalty. But, like I said, the contact would have happened regardless. Look at Neuer's face, he knows he's been lucky. Best thing that could have happened would be to let the VAR review take place in full before ending the match and perhaps looking at the monitor. If the ref looks at the monitor and still rules it out then it can't really be argued.

I dont know the rules, to me it looked like Neuer stood still and Saka ran into him at pace. No idea how to decide what to do in that situation, VAR should've been at least used however.

It’s not a red card for Kane, he’s trying to shield the ball from Gabriel going around and he’s ran into the elbow whilst bending down. Awarding a penalty isn’t the most serious punishment as you said in the first clip, sending someone off is for accidental and soft contact would be.

The Kane elbow you could argue should have been a red. There were a lot of calls you could say were wrong. There is no point dwelling on what ifs.

Arsenal cost themselves with the uneforced errors for Bayern's goals, the inexperience showed but they did well to come back and draw the game when Arsenal teams of old might have collapsed under the pressure. If he would have had a bit stricter approach then kane should have gotten a red and Arsenal and bayern both a pen. But With his overall handling of the game was great and his decisions were understandably true to his line

By the letter of the law, gabriel's handball is a penalty. However, unless someone can show me the subsection paragraph in the handball section of the rulebook where this EXACT context/circumstance is highlighted and included as worthy for a penalty then it is not a penalty. Common sense has prevailed. It'd be a different discussion altogether if even just one of the Bayern Munich players had pressed or sprinted toward Gabriel to pressure him. Not a penalty. Never a penalty unless you have no common sense.

Sometimes the context of the game must inform the ref's decision in tandem with the written rules. Look at Saka's "foul" by Neuer. The keeper went for the ball and Saka positioned his foot to make contact with the keeper's leg to force the foul. It was not a penalty at all. This is embarrassing for Arsenal because they can quickly lose respect in this competition when they act entitled and think that they will get their way in this tournament. They need to keep their heads. Saka had a last-minute open chance to win the game and instead, he ran up and tried to get the foul. They need to improve their attitude for the next round or it will be over for Arsenal by next week.

The Saka penalty is 50/50. But the Handball for Bayern is a clear penalty. The Ref was aware of but did decide not to give. Also if both sides get a penalty my bet is on Kane and Neuer. In the end the draw is fine. But Bayern now have home advantage.

(2) The "pull" of Odegaard on Kane is not a foul/ penalty (3) Neuer on Saka at the last minute of the game is not a foul. It was a dive by Saka (4) The elbow of Kane on Gabriel was deliberate, and that is a foul. Probably a red card, but that was malicious in intent and could easily be a red card.
