David Letterman was the opposite. When Norm Macdonald started doing his Letterman sketches on SNL, Dave immediately invited Norm on the show, made a couple of cracks at Norm and then let it go. Norm kept doing the bit on SNL, kept frequently going back on Letterman’s show as one of Dave’s favorite guests till the very end. Norm performed the very last stand up spot on Late Show with David Letterman before Letterman retired.

The thing is Johnny Carson was not a comedian. People forget that he was an entertainer there’s a difference. A standup comedian can take it. An entertainer cannot they are too thin skinned

Johnny could take it from his peers (same generation) and dish it out. Wayne Newton threatened him physically one time and he ceased his rubbing of him. I believe he didn’t want to be the butt of jokes from the younger generations, however.

I agree, many have fond memories of different periods due to nostalgia but early nineties was the best for talent and real belly laugh humor.
