Did Work Sharp stop $3 short of Professional level? Is it really PRECISION Adjust-able until the fix

4-5 months of moderate to heavy use has brought me to realisation that some shortcuts were taken in order to keep the price of this sharpener - Worksharp Pro PA - in check. The funny part is that for less than $3.00 YOU can take it a huge notch up. Eliminating slop, rocking, and rolling in this machine is as easy as removing 6 screws, swapping bushings, and placing 2 zip-ties on the plastic components. I kid you not!

I saw a lot of big channels reviewing this, but I didn’t feel that they are getting into enough depth. LMK what you think! Here’s the link to the bushings: 6mm Bore x 10mm OD x 10mm Length Self-Lubricating Sintered Bronze Bushings 10PCS amzn.to/48Aafl9

Well unfortunately and good for them but most Big Channels are paid for reviews or the item has been given to them. Doesn't leave alot of room for the negatives or suggestions.. only the positives and ➕️'s.. That's why your channel is Important to give us the real and real world challenges.. Good job on your unbiased opinion and Honesty.. Thx!!

Jon machinist 45yrs here have you disassembled the frame from the adjustment screw and vertical support bar. I would like to add 2 assist springs to keep light tension on the whole thing, like a press
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 5 ай бұрын
@@broken1965 I think the assembly is more akin to the tool feed drive on a lathe: a worm gear with a parallel shaft. So all that was needed was additional bearing pressure on the shaft side. Unfortunately they left that side open hence the zip tie fix, no way to fit a bushing there.

If you don't mind me asking what are your thoughts on the lansky Precision Sharpening Kits ? It's a nice small rig that is easy to field carry .
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 5 ай бұрын
@@daryenmirabal2656 just saw the question. If I was looking for a portable kit, the WSPA is much better than the Lansky. The latter’s stones fall out and crack in the middle of sharpening and just for that I would boycott the brand, so disrespectful I find the lack of proper adhesive. But, since it was my first fixed angle sharpener, here’s the truth: It nearly destroyed my confidence in the ability to sharpen knives. With all its shortcomings, the small WSPA is a decent portable tool.

Thank you for the video. I really like my Worksharp pro and use it often. I think the things you pointed out and found a solution for will make my experience even better. I hope you will let us know if/ when Worksharp responds or comments on your findings. I think they should appreciate your video, especially as you were a promoter of their product. The only negative I think they might perceive is that you suggested your viewers send the inferior-bushings along with a thank you to Worksharp. Other than that they should be appreciative. Thanks again for the video and suggestions.

Haha! I intentionally poked fun at their engineering department! I am of that profession and if I was a betting man, the bet would be the prototype was all metal and somewhere along the way the design got “optimised” for production. The logic is that professionals would use stone wheels or shop belt sanders so they didn’t expect some amateur doing 20-30 sharpenings per month. Thanks for the great comment!

Nice to see you returning to your "roots" towards the end of the year: proper sharpening as well as very elaborate and justified nagging. First. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!! I also have the professional sharpener. I’ve used it from "Victoninox "to Magnacut steel. I’m gonna solve the problems 1 &2 this afternoon. Thank you again I never had problem 3 maybe because I don’t use the original stones. I bought, from Gritomatic a 6 inch stone holder (hapstone brand) and I use Venev centaur double side stones and Nano Cloths with diamond “spray”. The scratch pattern in the blade is better. My problem with this system is with long knifes. A 8 inch blade, if has 15 deg at the center of the clamp, will have 10 deg at the tip or at the heel, no matter how you clamp the knife. Another problem with long and thin knives is that they bend using only 1 clamp. 2 clamp system is better. Anyway, my kitchen knives cut towel paper even with those isues

Thank you for the brilliant information, really annoys me that Worksharp overlooked or didn’t recognise these issues at design and testing phase, especially as they had a previous iteration to learn from, Worksharp will never thankyou, they would be admitting their fault in design, it almost put me off buying it to be honest, I’ve already ordered it, just waiting for stock to arrive at my UK store, I’ve also ordered the bushings off Amazon which are arriving today. I never trust sponsored reviews from the larger channels, unfortunately this is KZfaq. Thanks again for the brilliant test and review, Subbed 😊

If I had to bet, the prototype had more metal hardware content than the production version. It happens often enough that the engineers lose these arguments with the suits that mind the profit margins. Besides, they were probably thinking that a person who sharpens blades for a living would not buy a tool like this. This is a product geared toward (borrowing photo camera terminology) an amateur or pro-mature DIY home-shop sharpener.

No, by the time I realised the original little WS PA wasn’t going to be able to satisfy my rapacious sharpening needs, this became available and I went for it.

Hello CBRx, I was wondering how long the sharpening plates and stropping plates last. Did you have to replace them in the few months of using this before making this video? How many knives would you say you can sharpen before having to renew a plate? Thanks for the honest review! We need more people like you on YT! You have my sub!!

Welcome to the tribe! The fine grit plates, 600 and 800, last well over 50 sharpenings. The heavier grits don’t get used as much so I haven’t replaced them yet. I don’t like the strop that came with the set a s the leather is waaaay too rough. You shouldn’t need to keep the fixed angle for stropping anyway, so I recommend a dedicated strop

They sent me 6mm x 10mm x 10mm and it will not slide onto the rod. I ended up using a size B drill to ream them out and it made them fit perfectly. Bit was only 5 bucks on Amazon. Yes...you are correct the 1/4 would be to big.
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
I ordered metric bushings and they work. It supposed to be a slip fit meaning almost no clearance, so 1/4” is too big. If your rod measures 1/4, send a picture to the email address in the channel description please

A few things to consider: 1. When you're measuring the flex of a the jaws in the knife sharpener, you have the measure the variation between the movement of the blade and the pivot of the rod that holds the abrasive. If the plastic base flexes, causing them to both move the same amount, then you would not affect the angle at which the abrasive contacts the blade, and it would not be a problem. 2. If the mount of the pivot, or the jaws flex when force is applied upward or laterally, it should not matter. You won't be applying force upward or laterally when you sharpen a knife, so there would be no reason for those parts to be engineered to brace against force in those directions. Doing so would add un-necessary cost to the unit. 3. When you measured the angle of the rod above and below the abrasive, was it contacting the table? It was hard to tell from the camera angle, but that would naturally change your outcome. Really, the measurement should be taken with the abrasive contacting the blade, as that is how it would be used. The comparison would ideally be between the contact at either end of the abrasive. 4. How much force are your applying when you sharpen? The task does not require much more than the weight of the arm and the abrasive, and the combination of your complaints about flexing and the wear on those two bushings implies the use of more force than is necessary.

Following up on this, you showed the rotational movement on the clamp when it not in the down position supported by the base bridge. Would assume the bridge serves to eliminate/reduce any such clamp movement. If not, you should show that flex while in the intended, down position.

Sorry about the delayed response. I have been having too much fun with this sharpener to be totally unbiased. That said, there is no such thing in nature as a perfect mechanism: any mechanical device will have imperfections! I find this one a good value based on how how much you get for your hard earned money.

Worksharp just made a change...not for the better. I ordered a couple extra Rod / Abrasive holders and one of the abrasive holders no longer has screws to take it apart for your bushing modification or cleaning it out. It is probably snapped together, but i don't want to destroy it for no reason. I really don't need it and would be glad to mail it to you if you want to dissect it on video.

Thanks for a great review. I replaced the nylon bushings with brass ones from Amazon but am having a problem. After sharpening for awhile the bushings seem to gum up and bind on the steel at the far bottom end of the rod. It appears that either the lube in the bushings is gumming up or maybe the rod heats up and expands (I would expect the bushings to expand also). I did check the diameter of the rod with a digital caliper and its straightness by rolling it on a flat surface. Any advice? Thanks

Might it be that the weight of the inclinometer at the end is gently bowing the rod, and that mass isn't on there during the sharpening procedure?

Absolutely love these hints/fixes and they come to me a day after I sent mine back. 😒 However, I think I will order a new one, implement these fixes and carry on. Loved the sharpener otherwise, although I'm placing the Work Sharp Ken Onion Sharpener into my tools tomorrow when it gets here, which I have also used. One thing - Can you find a way to get the clamp about a quarter turn tighter to hold the blade from laterally wiggling, if that makes sense? Thanks bunches!

How do you deal with the problem of the angle changing from the heel to the tip for longer knives? When you set the angle at the centre to 20 degrees and move to the tip, the angle gets smaller.

This video is worth its weight in gold. You'd never see paid reviewers address issues and design flaws like these in their videos, let alone provide solutions on how to fix them. All the flaws aside, would you consider this system recommendable for sharpening beginners? I'm currently undecided whether to invest into regular (diamond) sharpening stones and learn to sharpen by hand, guided sharpeners like the Precision Adjust or electric ones like WorkSharp's Knife & Tool sharpener.
@CuttingBoardRx

Not only would I recommend this WSPPA for sharpening beginners, but considering it’s price, I would suggest getting the basic WSPA ($60) as the first sharpener for a beginner. Either allows you to focus on the fundamentals of edge geometry without having to deal with the Human factor. Starting with a hand held or wet stones will lead, with 90% probability, to forming bad habits. Get the edge geometry and burr formation right first, then, when you switch to hand grinding, or belt sanding you will immediately know if you’re not forming a correct edge. I would not recommend the composite stone Lansky system, you know, the red box one that is selling for $39 or anything by Smyth. They will distract you from learning the fundamentals and then break 😂

@@CuttingBoardRx Thanks a lot. Really appreciate the insight. Obviously, the basic WSPA has been on my radar as well but since I'm more of a buy-once-cry-once kinda guy, I feel like I would immediately regret not getting the WSPPA instead. 😅 In terms of build quality and improvements, it certainly seems like the better investment in the long run, even though it would mean living off of Ramens for a while. 🤣
