You just summed up The Rings of Power perfectly! It's one of, if not, the most beautiful show I've ever seen. Yet the story was terrible, it completed disregarded almost every bit of LotR lore known to man, had characters doing/saying things that were completely OUT OF CHARACTER, and in the end you have a show that was absolutely mediocre at best, airing at the same time as a show where the showrunners don't hate the source material - House of the Dragon. Although Bill Murray did improvise a lot, he was still going off of what was written in the script, he just tweaked the words a bit. Many of the other actors did the same thing. Sigourney Weaver's line "You don't act like a scientist, you're more like a gameshow host" was an ad lib, as she was supposed to say "you are more like a used car salesman".
