Did You Know In PEAKY BLINDERS…

Such was the attention to detail on the show that actors were required to perform a perfect native Birmingham accent in auditions if they were to be considered for a role. If the accent was not deemed up to scratch then regardless of an actor's status they were deemed surplus to requirements by the show’s producers. Star of Poldark, Elena Thomlinson, found out first hand how difficult it was to impress Peaky Blinders’ casting directors as her accent was deemed unsatisfactory and she was rejected from starring in the show. Thomlinson has said of her audition for Peaky Blinders: “I auditioned for Peaky Blinders when it was first starting, but they said, ‘You need to be able to do a Birmingham accent’, I tried and they said ‘You just can’t do it can you love?’” Ouch.

But they got one key thing connected with the title entirely wrong. This according to someone that is on record as having been a local historian and a descendant of the actual people involved in this. That business about razor blades being stuck in their caps and that they would swing their light little caps around and cut people is pure crap. Historian tells us that they would pull their belts off and swing them at people and hit them with the buckles. This is something that gangs have done for a long time in a variety of places. Now, if you're hit in the face but even just the common d-shaped buckle, you can easily be blinded by the blood coming off your forehead, eyebrow, or even getting hit in the eye. But the actual origin of the phrase, as he had described it, was that they would wear their hats Lowdown so that they would nearly cover one of their eyes so as to show off a particular jayanti image to the ladies. Therefore, the hat would activate "Blinder." Think horse Blinder, like you see on horses in Amish Country or Central Park.
