I was shocked to find out that your car, even if modern, will use MORE fuel than on the previous E5 unleaded. Yes, E10 actually reduces your MPG!! There has been a lot of chat about E10 petrol but most has concentrated on the possible damage it can do to older or classic cars, the increased cost at a time of already high petrol prices has not been discussed,

you left out a very important detail... IT takes fuel to create the ethenol... typically made from corn... so its a poor offset of anything.... in the US, ethenol is pushed because of all the farm subsidies... also, it drives up food costs because its taking crops out of the food system...

Most of your arguments against ethanol from corn you mention are nolonger issues. Bio-fuel is used for the corn production, in all field equipment. Co2 is trapped during ethanol production and sold for industrial use.

@@troyg3439 in response to your argument, a bigger irony is the amount of fuel wasted and polution created for private jets to attend climate talks, and for 85 vehicles multiple aircraft for our president to attend climate summit when he could have attended via zoom. any offsets by ethenol is blown out of the water by the amount of waste on the bigger scale... another item which would give the same or better results than changing fuel is better investments in syncing traffic lights, giving more incentives to reduce congestion traffic, ie higher tolls at certain times, etc. i watch my mpg go down the drain from stop light to stop light vs being able to drive smoothly at a constant pace...

This is old news in the US. We've had E10 for all grades of petrol for years and yes it does cause a decrease in fuel mileage. We also have E85 (85% Ethanol) for vehicles specifically designed to run on it. Many newer vehicles can use it, but it has to be FlexFuel rated. One advantage to Ethanol is it has higher octane, so even though you get worse fuel economy, it can actually improve performance in a FlexFuel car able to take advantage of the higher octane. I'm still not convinced about any real emissions saving because there's also the additional emissions of producing the crops the Ethanol is made from. Not to mention potential increases in food costs because farmland used to grow crops for fuel aren't used to grow crops for food. We still have 100% gasoline available at some stations scattered around the US. I try to use those on my older performance cars whenever I can. Anything late model runs on E10 just fine, but the mileage does suffer.
@nickb3968
@nickb3968 2 жыл бұрын
In the US, E10 has been in use for some time- the claim that it's for the environment has always been dubious. The thing is, the farming lobby is very powerful in the US and has been paying off the legislature to continue the subsidies for ethanol production. So the "savings" is not what it appears in that it's all taxpayer subsidized in addition to the poorer fuel mileage. Given that most of us are taxpayers, we are paying more for the use of ethanol, it's just not at the pump- but via taxes.
@troyg3439
@troyg3439 2 жыл бұрын
Might want to look up those so called ethanol subsidies, they haven't existed for quite a few years. The RFS(renewable fuel standard) requires the production of ethanol and gives blenders tax breaks, and tax incentives to fuel stations upgrading equipment to offer say E15 or E85 fuel Blends. No farmers are receiving subsidies in any way for production or is the price of fuel artificially lower due to subsidies on sales as was previously the case.

I agree however in most European countries there is no such thing as Ethanol free petrol. 98 sold in France contains up to 5% Ethanol and it's not mentioned anywhere at the fuel pump. Also you mention +15% in fuel consumption which seems like a lot. @@pereldh5741 according to recent studies traditional biofuels like ethanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 19-48 percent compared with petrol, while advanced or cellulosic biofuels can reduce emissions by more than 100 percent. A less-recognized benefit of biofuels is their ability to reduce other harmful emissions that are found in petrol exhaust. So yes you need more fuel but the eco balance is better. However the production of ethanol also has to be eco-friendly. Swapped to Super (it's ethanol free, according the brand's website) on my carburettor 2-stroke moped as E10 isn't compatible and there's no way I can safely process fuel to extract ethanol in a flat! I'd also do this on cars that are less used as the alcohol absorbs water more readily, so fuel sitting in the tank and carb will degrade faster. Like dash-for-diesel's unwanted side effects overall, but as petrol use decreases with the switch to electric ("bolt for battery"?) it will have less impact. I await the endless "Were you mis-sold a battery vehicle?" legal ads. It would be better for the government to set particular targets that engineers and consumers can work towards, than subsidize particular technologies that turn out to be lobbyists' over-promised snake-oil.

I'm of the opinion that many modern petrol engines were never at their best, even on 95 RON E5. My bike used to knock on it on occasion when at low RPM, so I got a remap done with super unleaded instead. The handbook does state that 95 is good enough but I always felt that a compression ratio of over 11 to 1 makes a nonsense of that. Years ago, with motorbikes at least, with anything above 9.5 to 1, 5 star {remember that ?} was advised. I don't know if any bikes newer than my own have knock sensors, as is the case with cars. Had enough trouble when low sulphur diesel came in, as my fuel pump failed. Since then, I tip some mineral two stroke oil in the tank when I fill up with diesel. Esso super is currently ethanol free but there isn't an Esso station near me. I sorned the bike 'til April 2022, brimming the tank with Murco super, after first adding 170ml of Briggs and Stratton Fuel Fit. What a palaver all of it is !

Wait until we get E25 forced on us here in the UK within the next few years!! The step up in energy loss and the 100% gain in the hygroscopic nature of the additional ethenol in petrol will be a time bomb for older cars. Even with E10 use a good quality PEA / ethenol stabilising fuel system additive (liqui molly) every month and this will inhibit the corrosive and hygroscopic properties of the ethenol in the fuel and safe guard tanks, pumps, lines and injectors. I am even sure costco fuel has there own PEA cleaner mixed in at the pump and I hope big fuel company's like BP and shell adapt their own chemical package to help drivers. All this carry on with petrol and damaging cars when they could implement HVO diesel with zero compatibility issues and take a massive chunk out of pollutants in the industry (equivalent of going E90 on petrol) over night .... But that would go against the anti diesel rhetoric.

In simple terms - yes, E10 has 10% ethanol, compared to 5% ethanol in E5, because ethanol is about 30% less power dense than petrol, it means you get ~3% higher consumption compared with pure petrol and 1.5% compared to E5 for same power output. In practice however the difference is very very small. In my experience E85 (85% ethanol) increases fuel consumption by ~10%, but that was in DI engine with "smart ECU"... so who knows. It probably as well delivers 10% less power, so match probably checks out. I have not noticed any difference between E10 and E5, but again maybe there is difference in power. What is slightly sad is that most people don't know it and goverment just sells us basically inferior fuel for exactly the same price, kind of even worse in Europe, where in most countries E85 is standard and it still cost same despite one needing to consume at least 10% more of it. I always thought it is little bit unfair to sell it for same price as if it is same product, if E10 would be 10% cheaper compared proper fuel, then fine... E85 probably should be 50% cheaper to be fair, but we know it won't happen. As for government policy - it always been half baked, for frankly rather raw... they just do these "smoking mirrors" sort of policies, with cool titles and they achieve nothing, because they are not based on any particular science. Or sometimes even if they are... they limit the science in a way which proves their point (selective bias). Good example is diesel cars - government was pushing them for 2 decades, because they have lower CO2... except CO2 is just one of many types of different pollutants and as a whole diesel proven to be more dirty. And they do this every single time. I am surprised that anyone is surprised about it. But in other hand that is why these politicians keeps doing this - they know majority of people are ignorant, they know nobody does fact checking and they get away with it.

I've done several full tank trips recently(same route etc) since E10 came in, and as I monitor my MPG closely can vouch for the fact that I am getting between 5 and 8% less MPG than I used to get on E5.This is also compounding the cost due to recent fuel price increases.Lastly is the fuel truly cleaner if you're having to use the same percentage more (5%) as has been increased as a proportion in ethanol!?

I've experienced a similar increase in fuel consumption - I reckon on around 7-8% on my elderly 'modern'. That's almost exactly the premium on cost of E5 Super petrol. Since I have two classics which need E5 I have made the decision to run all my cars on the more expensive fuel in the hope that the demand will ensure the continued availability.

I do about 1500 mile a week and track my mpg using Fuelly, I’ve noticed over the last 3 months the mpg has dropped from early 50’s to mid 40’s, a drop of about 5 mpg. May not seem like a lot but with fuel prices being as high as they are it means I am spending about £8-£10 more per tank and getting less mpg so am getting a double hit of loss.

I knew that for along time that alcohol contain remarkably less energy than the same amount of petrol, so it is obvious that the fuel consumption will be higher with E10 than with E5. I had a Brazilian car magazine from around 2010 with an article about the then new Fiat Palio - Fuel consumption with E100 was 40% (!) higher than with E20...

I have been running my car on V power for ages. Its E5 instead of E10. And after a few fill-ups it started to run leaner. Not only on the board computer on the dash but even looking at the fuel trims via OBD you could see it was correcting itself to run leaner. So the extra cost of E5 is paid for (and some) bij extra mileage.

The first time I filled my tank with this fuel, 2012 VW GTI, 14.2 gallon tank my car went more than 160 miles further than it normally did on E10 fuel. I have only put this fuel in my car since. E10 sucks, and I will only go back to it if prices continue to go up!

I’ve known this for some time. If you watch some videos on big horse power turbo cars in the US or Australia which run E85, to gain a cooler burn to prevent detonation, the fuel systems have to be massively uprated to flow a huge amount more fuel as it just isn’t as efficient. I’m continuing to use the super unleaded fuels as they still only contain E5. Going to E10 is the first step on the slippery slope and I don’t think it will be long before the UK follows the USA and we end up with E15 and E30 grades of fuel which are extremely damaging to cars not set up for ethanol. Ultimately the government don’t give a shit because their ultimate goal is to remove petrol and diesel cars from the road completely. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I recently had mainly performance turbo petrol cars. Super unleaded in those generally offers more performance AND better fuel economy. This was proven in comparisons between E5 and E5 Super. Ok, if you have some 1 litre naturally aspirated Dacia then no. But if you have some 2 litre turbo or more you were going to see benefits. I believe it was in a Ford Focus RS and it only 2 MPG on average but enough to help offset the cost of premium fuel. It would be interesting to see the difference between E5 premium and E10, because I would say there is a fair chance it'll be more noticeable. On paper E10 simply has less energy content. Perhaps the gap would be as much as 3-4MPG in certain engines and conditions. For me getting the extra performance is my priority, but I know the car will also go further anyway than on weak sauce E10.

Interesting video Jack, and I think you're right about the Gov't's half-baked thinking on E10. However, regarding heat pumps, your statement that they are only suitable for modern airtight houses is not strictly true. There are circumstances where they work well in older houses too, but there are considerations that have to be made when installing them. We have a Victorian stone-built detached house, which isn't airtight. It has thick stone walls and no insulation in the walls, but it does have a lot of loft insulation. We have 15 large rooms and use a heat pump to provide most of our heating needs in the Winter. It runs underfloor heating in the cellars and oversized radiators in the upper two floors. However, we do combine this with a gas boiler (in a hybrid system) so that the gas takes over when the outside temp is 5c or below, this ensures we only use the heat pump when it is at its most efficient. I realise this solution is not viable for most people, but I think that we have to be careful when making blanket statements that don't hold good for all circumstances.

I have a classic Citroen DS. I filled from nearly empty with E10 as that was all that was available at the time. I noticed the idle speed had slowed- to the extent that it was stalling. I added an octane booster additive at half tank and now it is fine- actually I tiny bit fast because I had adjusted it. Coincidence? it is the only thing that changed and I use the car all the time. I assume the tick-over changed because it was running less efficiently?. Modern fuel injected cars use a crank sensor to govern tick-over so would not notice a change.

@eoghanobrien6980
@eoghanobrien6980 2 жыл бұрын
@@Stevieboy130664 Agree with this. E10 is very bad for cars like a Citroen DS, or anything without fuel injection really, will chew through fuel lines and the general fuelling system. Also, the very earliest cars with direct injection won't tolerate it either - think of GDI Volvo/Mitsubishis and naturally aspirated VW Group FSI engines, Mk3 SCi Mondeos etc - cars like that. Pretty much any other car will run with E10 without an issue, but as noted, you will get fewer miles to the gallon because of the lower energy density, but because Ethanol has so much lower emissions, you still get less CO2 than using E5 even allowing for the poorer fuel consumption. Even if fuel consumption goes up by 5% using E10 compared to E5, CO2 emissions are still 3-4% better than they would be using E5.

One important point Jack. The carbon reduction savings are by law measured on an energy content basis and cover the whole ethanol supply chain. There are also minimum CO2 savings for biofuels used in the U.K. and EU. This keeps out ethanol produced to lower or unaudited standards.

I have a Twin Turbo V6 Kia Stinger for which 91 octane or higher is recommended. I say recommended because it's not absolutely required. So, here in Quebec, Canada, all gasoline at the pump can have up to 10% ethanol (mandatory government regulations). I've noticed that if I fill my car with 87 octane fuel (regular), I do a lot less kilometers than a full tank of 91 octane (super). So I've come to the conclusion that paying less for regular fuel per litre isn't economical at all. Not to mention possibly being detrimental to my high compression engine. So 91 octane for me from now on.

Yes, I was aware that the energy content in E10 compared with E5 could be a few percent down. We’re a few months on since you produced this entry, but now that we are a full winter on from the conversion to E10, I have noticed that the fuel consumption over a few months year on year, for similar travel/weather etc is about 3% higher, which is roughly in line with that fact. The other point to note (notwithstanding the oil price rises) is that the conversion was a back door tax rise, as the excise duty is per unit volume, and not based on the energy content. So if you work out the Treasury’s revenue based on kWh thermal, they automatically benefited from it, even if oil prices stayed the same. As much of the ethanol for E10 petrol in the UK looks like being made from animal grade wheat, it’s anyone’s guess what the effect will be given price rises for all kinds of wheat, and other crops from the farms this year.

But is it worth using it if it consumes more fuel and possibly slightly damages the engine or fuel system?. For the sake of around a 10p saving per litre, I'm not sure. Plus if we did use E10, I would end up worrying and using a fuel additive more often which also costs.
