Did you know this about Joker? When Arthur looks in the mirror and sheds a tear, this was an accident! Joaquin Phoenix was overwhelmed by the scene while struggling with Arthur’s smile, and the director thought it was perfect and decided to leave it in.

If memory serves Phoenix actually hurt himself while trying to force his smile. Really shows the dedication he had for the role.

not that he hurt himself. its not 100% sure what caused this but its 100% sure that it was 'improvised' or how i would say: it just happened, it was not part of the script.

It was self-induced, self-inflicted. But it made the scene that much more real and believable. That of a man struggling with himself, with life. Coming to grips that he lives in a grim world and it's changing him. He's torn between the shreds of goodness he still has left within him versus what he's becoming. He wants both, but can't have both. He knows giving up on either one will hurt him, but he's tiring of holding onto both. He's being driven to a bad place: He knows there's good people in the world but he rarely gets to see it, and it's always taken away when he comes close to it. On the other side, part of him wants to go headlong in the other direction. Merely a reflection of what the world gives to him, and choosing to amplify it. And he knows he's being consumed. He has to accept the fact that as bad as this world might be, he may not be the best person in the world either but he at least has his reasons.
