Filter feeding almost feels like a modern invention. We don’t often think of a ton of extinct life forms that filtered water for their daily bread, and yet they existed. More are being found all the time. There were pterosaurs that did it, extinct birds that did it like they do today, giant whale-like fish, the ancient whales that gave rise to today’s whales, and a slew of ancient marine reptiles - like the long-necked plesiosaurs and some of the bizarre manatee or turtle like placodonts. However, a brand-new study shows that an entirely different group, related to the ichthyosaurs, also tried their flippers at filter-feeding.

There is also a family of filter feeding anomalocarids called Tamisiocarididae which means that filter feeding has been around since the Cambrian period

That intro made me realise something: Gamera is a placodont, not a turtle at all. The rocket limbs and flying make sense now.

It’s cool to see this niche slowly start to get filled out in the record. I know when I was a kid which wasn’t even that long ago, leedsicthys was the only animal being recognized as a pre-Cenozoic filter feeder. At that time I always thought it was weird no marine reptiles did.

Bro you forgot about the filter feeding invertebrates like Tamisiocaris borealis and aegirocassis when making the thumbnail Edit: thank you for listening!

Legit, that's just taking the mainstream vertebrates perspective. Filter feeding's been around since at least the Cambrian lol

Interestingly enough, Dougal Dixon on his book "The New Dinosaurs", created an species of mosasaur called Whulk, which was an filter feeder. Now, we're discovering real life Whulks, it's All Your Yesterday's predictions all over again.

If my time reading fringe conspiracy forums and old pulp sci-fi magazines has taught me anything, it's that an ancient race of lizards has always done something before you.

BTW 19:55 the 'knuckles' on this triassic Ichtyosaur's 'wings' closely reminded me on a modern humpback whale. Is this just artistic freedom, or was it the real deal?

@@icarusunited Right. Photosynthesis would not work in larger animals though - we just don't have enough area for it to make a real difference.
@icarusunited
@icarusunited 9 ай бұрын
Exactly, in was mostly towards smaller animals. One who could theoretically evolve it would have to be small (Less than the average dog/cat sized.), or enormously large. Almost blue whale size, but on land. The only way it could evolve is through a para-sympathetic evolution between a virus/bacteria, and an animal however. It's unlikely to evolve for that reason. (Actually occurs like this in sea slugs who eat macroalgae by stealing chloroplasts.) Among Vertebrates, the Spotted Salamander is the only known one. Its genes fuse during the embryonic stage, and it gains the ability to use chloroplasts to make energy. Granted, they still need to eat chloroplasts plants to continue to do so. @@tt-ew7rx

Yes, they are. Only that they filter bigger prey. Instead of microscopic food, they fill their pouches with water and small fishes, then filter the water out
