Bruce Willis returns as John McClane, an off-duty cop who is the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. On a snowy Christmas Eve, as he waits for his wife's plane to land at Washington Dulles International Airport, terrorists take over the air traffic control system. It's now up to McClane to take on the terrorists, while coping with an inept airport police chief, an uncooperative anti-terrorist squad and the life of his wife and everyone else trapped in planes circling overhead.

Studio executives had problems with crashing an entire jumbo jet with passengers. The backup plan was to crash a cargo plane and kill only the two pilots. But ultimately the director felt like the terrorists would seem more dangerous with the bigger spectacle.

In the first movie, most of McClane's one-liners were scripted, but Bruce Willis threw in a few ad-libs. The director liked them and told Willis that for the second movie, he could ad-lib all he wanted. The third movie is really good. Can't wait for the reaction.

Did I miss something? Jane looks like she is dressed up for a 1940s costume party. She looks like she's going to sing and could her lipstick be any redder? Could have used pagers. People typically had codes worked out to send messages with pagers.

The one thing I just cannot gloss over is the scene when John proved Hatchling team was using blanks with the blue stickers. It is beyond believable that he would fire all of those in a station and not get gunned down. Look at all of the cops behind him.

1990... virtually nobody would have a cellphone. Maybe a bulky satalite phone or something, but not likely on the plane. Wifi for sure wouldn't have been a thing. The internet wasn't even open to the public until 1993. Idk how the phones built into the plane worked. Probably by satalite.

Cell phones were bulky, expensive and not widely available like today compared to 1990. Also there was no wifi and internet. That is why you see John with a pager and civilians using payphones in the airport.

At about 37:00 minutes you mentioned that people should be turning on their cell phones and realizing what was going on, In 1990 cell phones were still rare and just starting to filter down into the public purview and coverage would have been very spotty at best, so the chance that someone on the plane had one and could use it to help would be remote. This is demonstrated by using beepers and phone booths early on in the movie,

Great reaction. I'd say this is a fun fact, but there's nothing fun about it. Originally, they were going to show the little girl who owned that doll that John found in the wreckage of the crashed plane. But the filmmakers changed their minds and apparently came to the conclusion that it was a step too far, so they showed other sympathetic passengers like the elderly woman instead to hammer in what monsters Stuart's terrorists were. 45:24 He didn't shoot him at that point because he was planning to use him as leverage to get the terrorists to back off and land his wife safely. So killing him would have been extremely stupid as that would have meant he had no bargaining chip and the terrorists would have had nothing left to lose and probably would have just killed everyone they could out of spite. Not that it mattered since the plan failed when Stuart's men showed up the very next second, so John had to improvise as he does every time he's in these situations.

Yes, practical effects. They did the explosions at a small regional Michigan airport. In the movie it was just one terminal but it was actually the entire little single-terminal airport. The movie paid to use it and then rebuild it.

Why did the plane explode like that if they had no fuel left?
@FrozenTundra88
@FrozenTundra88 Жыл бұрын
I believe it's because it was low on fuel because jet fuel is actually hard to ignite other than the engine doing so, but the fumes are far more flammable. Absent a more scientific explanation, though, I think we could just say 'Hollywood Physics' where cars can explode by merely crashing head-on into walls or trees.

At 36:30 you mention never seeing modern movies kill innocent people this way, and it's true - 9-11 forced Hollywood to hit the emergency brakes on what had been, up to that time, the #1 Box Office draw - the action movie. It took a few years of relying on the previously old fashioned "disaster" movies before they finally found a workaround - SUPERHERO movies and FANTASY films (with sizeable budgets, finally). But here's some trivia if you're interested: producer Joel Silver changed the action genre forever with the one-two punch of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard in 87' and 88' respectively, and for just over a decade, action movies used terrorists and faux terrorists as their go-to bad guys. "Die Hard on a..." became a phrase to encapsulate a TON of wannabes like Passenger 57, Air Force One, Toy Soldiers, Under Siege, Cliffhanger, Speed, Sudden Death, Executive Decision, The Rock, Con Air, Olympus has Fallen, and White House Down. Those are also among the best (and most entertaining) examples. Prior to that, during the Chuck Norris/ Burt Reynolds/ Richard Roundtree/ Clint Eastwood era of the 70's, it was mostly "gangs" and "drug runners" doing the heavy lifting for all the Hollywood heavies. Films like Death Wish, The Warriors, Assault on Precinct 13, Dirty Harry, Shaft, The French Connection, Gator, Good Guys Wear Black, and Mad Max led the charge with a TON of random gangs and violent drug dealers. The 80's ushered in the era of "ultra-violence" though. Parents in the conservative U.S. were up in arms about films like Robocop and the Die Hards/ Lethal Weapons because they were shockingly bloody affairs compared to our parents' old cowboy films - and even a lot of WWII films - where there was virtually no blood on screen at all. The 80's were drenched with it, from action films to horror films, and this started the era of the Hollywood "kill counts", where rabid fans would compare horror icons like Freddy and Jason and Michael Meyers, or action heroes like Rambo, The Terminator, and John McClaine. 9-11 changed all that, and Hollywood started focusing more on physical action, Jackie Chan-inspired action like the Bourne movies, or car-chase movies like the Fast and Furious films, or computer-generated violence like the Transformers, plus an ever-increasing emphasis on superheroes and high fantasy/swords and sorcery films. I remember either an article or a news bit on TV back in the 80's talking about how the U.S. was - at that time - largely immune to terrorism, and people wondered whether we should glorify such stories when Ireland and Europe and the Middle East were increasingly becoming hotbeds of terrorist activity. On 9-11, we joined the club, and now it DOES seem a bit odd to go back and watch the "innocence" on display when young filmmakers would just show off horrors indiscriminately, but on some levels, that "spectacle" has been a big part of box office draw since the waters caved in on the Egyptians in Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments. If you guys are squeamish about seeing kids getting killed on screen, DO NOT watch the director's cut of Wolfgang Petersen's Troy. The theatrical cut omits a LOT of violence, but the longer - and far better - director's cut shows what it probably would've been like for real, with invading armies simply putting EVERYONE to the sword without mercy. Talk about shock, lol. Nice to know that people (like you two) still care, of course, but before America got a taste of real-world terrorism, "ultra-violence" was just another movie maguffin that became popular because of the unprecedented success of the first Die Hard, as well as horror films like Friday the 13th.

Great movie. I love this movie better than the first. Another great Christmas movie just like Die Hard. Also you should also watch Die Hard 3 (Not a Christmas movie) and stop the other Die Hard movies are horrible. Of course you decide what you like all we do is warn you about the really really bad movies :) . In the Die Hard franchise they had a perfect run for years with first 3 movies but you cant always succeed. Die hard 4 was very bad and depressing and when you thought it was over but then somehow they succeed to make even a way way more bad movie in Die Hard 5 (which I don't even consider a Die Hard movie), Save you're self some time skip part 4 and 5. Also The General in Die Hard 2 comes from the same fictional country as the bad guy in this movie and also that fictional country is where Predator takes place so Commando, Die Hard and Predator all happen in the same universe :)
