Fuji taking the guns with her arms in her sleeves looks silly but it makes sense. Your not supposed to touch a blade with your hands as the oils from your skin can cause rust. She is not familiar with guns but simply applies the same custom.

I think you got it wrong. Consorts at the time were supposed to treat items owned by their husbands with respect, thus using their sleeves as layers to avoid coming into contact with items not their own. Has nothing to do with rust

Fuji handling the guns that way was sort of her way of being 'ladylike' in Japan. English cannons were different than the Spanish/Portuguese cannon. Spanish/Portuguese favored bigger cannons that shot larger shot, but had shorter less accurate range. Were harder to reload and adjust aim as well. English favored smaller cannons easier to aim, reload, and fired longer range. Depends on the cannon ball, but yes you could reuse them if they weren't deformed. Ships would fire cannons from the ship that shot at them at times. But later cannon balls were hollow and packed with gunpowder and a fuse added so they'd explode. But if the fuse was too long, or just went out for some reason, you could pull the fuse before it exploded, refuse it and fire it back.

Yabushige is a far more realistic depiction of Samurai than most of the romanticized versions seen in film and television. Just like their Arab, Indian, Chinese, European or African counterparts, they were all immediately concerned first with their own survival and accrual of power and second with their legacy. Yabushige is just unusual in how blatantly obvious his self-serving actions are. Everyone KNOWS he's not as loyal as he claims, but he can talk his way out of almost any problem.

There were certainly SOME samurai who were concerned with honor and justice, just as there were European knights who sought to be chivalrous and virtuous. As always, reality is somewhere between optimism and pessimism. Lord Yabu is human just like the rest of the characters in the book/show, and therefore his actions are informed both by his cultural values AND his incentives.

Some cannon shot could be reused but it was not usually feasible or worth the trouble to do so if you were well supplied.

also, because of the heat of the explosion, the cannonballs would sometimes warp. using warped cannonballs could make the ball ricochet inside the barrel and cause the cannon itself to explode.

16:10 yes you can but that doesnt mean you should. any deformation on the cannon ball will cause it to bounce around in the barrel which leads to damage of the cannon itself

The cannon balls could be reused but typically not so They were made from the cheapest iron possible and would tend to shatter or deform

18:54 _"She scares me"_ . He he he. Kiku is one of my favorite characters in this show, just like Fuji. Given that this is show based on an orientalist, deeply patriarchal story, it's great to see how its writers developed female characters who are three dimensional. I wonder if the ladies in this channel mistrust Kiko for exactly the same reason male viewers find her absolutely captivating. A beautiful, thoughtful, self-regarding woman who understands the power of her sex and sexuality. Imagine that.
