The whole point of the show is she is self destructive, and the curve is not heading towards redemption. The curve is going in the opposite direction. She is actively destroying herself, incrementally, and slowly. The only redeeming quality of the situation is that she is an amazing sense of humour. Fleabag is not a name that someone else is calling her, it is what she thinks about herself.

I wonder if maybe it's hitting a little too close to home - I've seen lots of older Americans just love the Fleabag character from day 1 with a mix of concern and delight. But to be closer to her age, where many of us make *some* variant of these mistakes, when Fleabag's a peer who is all too recognisable and who you love feels like a matter of life and death... I mean, the show is a lot, and these reactions really focus on how close to psychological horror it is (is horror the right word? distress. It's dark!), and that's rather why I'm liking them

Season 2 is a lovely sendoff but I think people praise it higher because it releases and soothes all the horrifying tension of S1, and that's so much easier to love and connect to. "Toxic" = human disoriented by grief and reaching out for comfort and escape in all the wrong places. Once you two are on her side, it'll be much smoother sailing. I appreciated that you immediately clocked she was being self-sabotaging/destructive - but ... you need to love her too. lol I say this as someone who spent my 20s flailing around for stability, having chaotic relationships, leaving wreckage behind me. in a state of barely controlled panic, racing around being horny, when all I wanted to do was cry for ten years. I totally get her and I loved her instantly. people always talk about "feeling seen" onscreen and how important it is. Yup. I feel like my 20something self was never ever seen until Fleabag. in fact, an old flame texted me after seeing it saying "have you seen fleabag yet? that's you when I met you." lol

I can't with these comments. Hey Maple, you are in the absolute right position here: the position of the human, of someone that can empathize. Maybe you will increase the "unseriousness" in later episodes just to comply with the standards of the audience but know this: the audience is mostly immature. They don't know the full extent of relationships and impact of using someone as precious as Harry in the show. 9 out of 10 people I've talked with, who watched this show, have this "Oh my god, she is such a queen right, radfem right, go off queen, slay." OR "Empathize with herr, take it easyyy, she is also humannn." vibes but they are missing the whole point of the show. They can't admit the flaws of the protagonist because they've attached to her immensely as a result of later episodes and so on. I'm giving it a thumbs up and a subscription due to your reaction.

I’m honestly surprised and a little bit upset to see so many people insist that they shouldn’t deeply examine this show or approach it from a psychological angle. Imo half the appeal is that the show is way deeper and a bit darker than most comedies, it’s very well written and demands that the viewer actively engage in understanding the unfolding character dynamics and looking deeper than just the surface character traits. So many people are insisting they’re not “getting it” because they’re American, but they *are* laughing at a lot of the jokes, but they’re also clearly interested in the psychology of Fleabag. It’s hard to take a lot of the British commenters seriously when they themselves are missing a huge aspect of the show. I’m really enjoying the reactions and can’t wait for the rest of the episodes, I really appreciate the deep thought that is going into all of this 🖤

C'est un humour très british/french. beaucoup de second degré, d'autodérision. franchement j'adore ce personnage qui n'a pas peur de ses faiblesses. et qui se soigne .

I am mean for suggesting this but the ladies require the british version of the Office. They will hate it.

' Second hand embarrassment ' - Not a term I had ever heard until this generation came along. It is a comedy, TV isn't always meant to make you feel comfortable... Fleabag is brilliantly written and the performances are excellent.

Second hand embarrassment is not a new term, and has been researched and proven by scientific study btw, so you not having heard it before is not a sign that the term is new or tied to a specific age group as you implied but just evidence of a blindspot in your own knowledge. I agree with your statement about Fleabag, but you could have defended Fleabag without being all 'back in my day-'. "this generation" is not a monolith.

This reaction video is painful to watch, especially the woman on the left with her vocal fry cringing like an awkward teenager...just doesn't get it..a shame really, one of the most incisive intelligent comedies.

the actress really fits the role imo, she never should have been chosen for the role in indiana jones, it was an awful role for her

The actress, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, wrote the show and originally acted it out in theatre.
