A year after his debut in professional football, #Maradona was already a highlight for Argentino Juniors. In 1977 he was summoned for the first time to the #Argentina team. Even with a reasonable performance in the few opportunities, the young Dieguito ended up cut from the final list of the 1978 World Cup, won by Argentina.
After the frustration of not being summoned to the Cup, Maradona would begin to settle in his team the following year, when he was just 18 years old. Here, against Brazil, in 1979, in a classic played at the Maracana stadium.

Diego, the capacity of the Maracaná used to be around 100,000 in the mid 20th century. It was later improved (made more comfortable and safer for the fans) and the capacity reduced to something shy of 80,000 people). Still, quite a feat for Diego, and not surprising to those who knew him from his childhood. He was a tough guy in the fields.

Bro, this man played football ahead of his time. Diego was a complete player. A central midfielder who even scored more goals than his strikers or forwards. He was also a defender. Will go deep , gets the ball and makes plays, and then receives the ball back and scores. His leadership on the pitch was what even set him apart from other great players. This guy was busy on the pitch for 90 minutes. I wish the media was evolved and advanced back in the day

Only who has lived that times may understand what gift has been Maradona to football history. We have been blessed in the past few decades by great, amazing players: Ronaldo "o fenomeno", Zidane, Van Basten, Ronaldinho... of course Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. All of them have been among the greatest of their own time. But the only one who was able to win with "ordinary" team was this great artist of this sport. Maradona has won at Naples, a club who hadn't basically any football history so far. His leadership was undiscussed not because he was just a phenomenal player, but because he had the qualities that only great leader posses and of the player which I have mentioned above only Christiano Ronaldo, probably the less skilled, and Zinedine Zidane have had. I have seen very few player with that kind of earned respect, Paolo Maldini was one of them. Who knows about team sport and not individual sport knows what I am talking about. That is why Maradona was able too reach twice the World Cup final and winning one while players like Messi, even with team which had more talent where a failure. Of course Messi has won much more and with better statistics but when you see how a football team is transformed only with the presence of a respected leader than you will understand while Diego Armando Maradona will ever be an icon and while, with all his troubles is still so much loved in Argentina and in Naples.

My point is that it takes leadership to transform a good team in a great team and it is only this great leaders that will remain forever in the heart of people. Gattuso from AC Milan has won much more than Maradona. Nevertheless Maradona will be remembered for ever in the history off football. Yes, Maradona had not done much non the 82 World Cup but the impact that he had in 86 and 90 will remain forever. They have been heroic sport stories like the ones of old greek mythology - and it is a pity that we have had not an Homer in modern time to praise his fortune and misfortune - and no one would take them away. I don't know how old you are but for a person like me with over 40 years of football knowledge Maradona still remain one of the great heroes off this sport, along with people like Beckenbauer, Zidane, Maldini, and few others, even if they were less skilled than Messi or Ronaldinho, which I admire much.

I think you are missing the point and we are going out of the beginning argument. The point is not who has been the greatest and I think such a question is a childish one which will remain ananswered. I have watched too much football to understand that comparison within great players are nonsense. I admit that I have never seen Pele playing football. I am old but not that old. I am just saying that Maradona has been a gift to mankind on regard of this beautiful sport, as well as Pele, Di Stefano, Valentino Mazzola, Schiaffino, among many many others. And if you go back and read again my opening statement you will not find any were where I have said that Maradona has been the greatest. One thing count on team sport that can be compared and that is leadership. on this regard Maradona has been a great sport team leader and this is a fact. Than you can go on having your favorites player but this is not the topic. Just one more thing: you talk about Zico leadership but you forgot that the real leader not the Brazilian team in 82 was not Zico but Socrates (go and read who was this great human being) and they were defeated by Italy not because they were better (the Italian team) but because they had two great leaders (Zoff and Scirea, read about them too) who made the group very tough.

Rivelino was more skilled than this guy. He won 2 leagues in 7 years, coming 8th in 2 occasions, 2nd, 4th etc... It took 3 years for him to win his first Serie A.

Pasarella would have done well as flyhalf for the Pumas on this showing in front of goal. This video also demonstrates just how much Diego developed and matured as a player by the time his World Cup came round, which shows that besides being blessed with God given talent, he also worked very hard to be the best. So much respect for this man.

I remember this time. Leão was the first average goalkeeper we had in the Brazilian squad. All the ones before him were just not good enough to mention. No one in Brazil wanted to be goalkeeper. It started to change with Leão, but the change happened in 1986, with Carlos and finally Tafarel in 1990. Nowadays we have a tradition of the best goalkeepers in the world, Neymar and no number 10 since Zico. Since 1990, Brazil has been a good defense, no creative midfield and a couple of excellent strikers. At the moment not even that. I’m afraid that our history of a fearful squad has finished. Finito.

This pitch was horrible in this game and in many of the others Diego played. Maradona is the best I have seen and it's impossible to imagine what he would have achieved with the pitches we have today, with today's referee's protection and with a more disciplined life without drugs. No Brasil , infelizmente hoje em dia muita gente comenta e assume opinião sem pesquisa e conhecimento da área abordada . Muita gente fala que Maradona venceu sozinho a copa de 86 , tendo feito apenas 5 gols , isso é matematicamente impossível , contando com a ´´colaboração `` da FIFA ao permitir o gol de mão . Plus there's a difference between this in a world cup vs a friendly, he was playing with a team that had just won world cup, Brazil didn't even press him. Coutinho menosprezou o Maradona, como se ele fosse um "cai cai", um jogador menor. Coutinho tinha um certo desprezo pelos craques, mesmo sendo treinador do Flamengo, um ano antes, na copa de 78, deixou no Brasil Júnior, Adílio, Falcão, preferindo improvisar o zagueiro Edinho na lateral esquerda e levando o volante Chicão em vez de vários craques que havia no meio de campo.
