Rare track from the original recording sessions of "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts".
After a legal controversy with the estate of the late Katherine Kulhman, which refused the license for her sampled voice, it was rewritten/rearranged and it became "The Jezebel Spirit", with completely different voice and lyrics.
Thanks to Hans "the mad taper" for this rare gem finally in good quality :-)

I’m thrilled and very grateful to hear (and see) this, having loved My Life in the Bush of Ghosts since the day it was released in 1981. I wish I had known about this surfacing when it happened. Thank you very much.

This album too has been with me since it was released. A true masterpiece. I have listened to “ Quran” well over 5,000 times.!it was only in the initial release. This track fits so very well with it.

Already was under the spell of the 80's LP.. This is absolutely admirable, the acoustic perfection, the visual development, a travel inside Space from here to there and then infinitely

I love this album. Bought in the summer of '82. Lost album in '05. Still have the cassette which eventually broke from play. Even read the book I checked out of San Bernardino Valley College by Amos Tutuola. Need this on CD and The Catherine Wheel by Byrne and Twyla Tharp. I recommend fellow talking album around the same time, The Red and the Black and everything Eno. And The Flying Lizards and The Suburban Lawns and Oingo Bingo and The Specials etc......

You can easily hear that Kuhlman did Eno/ Byrne a huge favour because, beside KK's witterings being inconsequentially inane (& so originally losing any 'recognition'), the reworked 'Jezebel;' is far superior - being spookier/ menacing.

@@carlosreira2189 Hmm: interesting: may well be WITHerings - as I discern your take on the track? But I still thought she sounded like she was WITTering - in that, exactly what is KK trying to impart? (See the 'Lot' story in Genesis 19.5; 7-8! Nasty!)

I remember when in 1980 the musical magazines in Italy wrote about the forthcoming Eno&Byrne album. When the release was deleted because of the Katherine Kuhlman voice, I read an article (probably in a fanzine) in which a bootlegger offered a tape with the "first sessions". I bought that tape and I think that also other people made the same thing. After some months I saw Magazzini Criminali in "Crollo Nervoso" shocking act, with some tracks of the soundtrack taken from the same source.

Living in Paris, France, when the album «My Life in the Bush of Ghosts» went out. As I was already fascinated by Roxy Music and Talking Heads realisations, obviously I adquired the vynil of this very wellseen and welcome duo, and I never regretted it 👌🏻 I love Music I know the voices I also met the bush and its sad creatures (accepting to lose a substantial part of oneself cannot be a happy will) and only The Super-powered Spiritual Mind knows I was able to be there, here, Face to Face : it takes to be clean inside 🙂 and a musician as well.

So interesting! Such a different tone to the version on the album. Her voice is much more integrated with the music, whereas the male exorcist somehow counters it. Thanks for revealing this to the world!

First time listening...sounds like a toned down version of Jezebel. But this could also have been used for a Bowie song. Her voice is definitely not as audible as in the final version. Great find, thank you!

Hans “the mad taper” (search Google) was a dutch Sony employee and then radio conductor, friend of many rock musicians. He taped many demos, unfinished tracks, live acts… Chris Frantz of Talking Heads wrote about him in his "Remain In Love" book. Years ago Hans put his gigantic tape archives online but every week his blog was closed. Changed name and web address but again closed… many, many times. Some tapes are still available in “Guitars101” and "The International Echoes Hub" forums, also the full “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” first sessions. I remember he wrote that this tape was given to him by David Byrne.

Sorry for the delay in replying. "Hans De Vente (The Mad Taper) was a friend of the Talking Heads and is also mentioned in the book written by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth "Remain In Love." Ten years ago he published the demo version of "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" in his blog, which was later shut down. He reopened others, but they were all closed. He then gave many of his tapes (demos and live recordings) to the Guitar101 forum, and many can still be found there.
