As a Mum to 2 kelpies and a border collie who live in the city, I can say these working dogs can thrive away from a farm (even if that is where they are really bred for). We find frisbee and ball can be great outlets for them … people are always saying … wow they must be a handful! But once the exercise is done, they mainly like to sleep! I would never adopt a puppy working dog for this lifestyle but we can make it work for rescues … with a bit of work!🐾💕

I think real personal protection dogs spend most of their lives incredibly stressed. They have some level of drive, but also a lot of their behaviour is taught and the dogs themselves don't get a choice in it. I think if you could ask the dogs what life they would want, they would choose EXACTLY the life you offer the dogs at The Farm.

A friends dog kept failing all her service dog training…what to do, he took her to the beach on holiday and found out her love of the water…surprisingly two weeks later she rescued a child, now she had a new role. Works with lifeguards at the beach.

There’s so many factors Luke & Sam need to consider when deciding where to next with ALL their foster dogs, I don’t envy having to make these decisions. I know it all comes from a good place but everyone’s suggestions about extra training etc for 1 or 2 of the dogs would put a huge strain on their resources, ie Luke. Plus, the more dogs that find a permanent home at the Farm means less options to take on more rescues as well as the expense of taking care of such a huge pack & the restriction it places on socialisation for the human pack. I trust in Luke & Sam to make a decision that’s best for the individual dog, the pack & their family 💚💚💚

I stopped watching your videos after one of my dogs died last November, but felt ready to watch again this evening, and found this video fascinating! While living on the Outer Hebrides some years ago, I met a Border Collie who was still working, slowly. at age 21! So Diesel has a long life ahead of him with the right family, possibly yours!

A daycare dog named Nala would hang out in the pool and always run outside the pack when Luke would race on the motorbike. I Believe Nala was a Kelpie.

I'm just going to come out and say it.... I am not a fan of isolating dogs, making them hungry, and stimulating them to attack rather than live, all for men’s desires. It makes me angry, actually. Animals don't get a choice to make these sacrifices. They shouldn't have to do it. I'm really glad you've decided not to go down that road and want to keep her happy. I'm confident that you will find the right balance of work and play for Abra.

Im glad that we know what Diesel is now, Ive kept several kelpies in suburbia....they do well with lots of exercise, brain training games and agility training, he'd do fantastically well with someone with lots of energy. Im also just quietly hoping that anyone who is thinking of adding pressure for you guys to foster fail with dogs remembers how many people pressured you to keep Chance and Nevaeh, and just how fantastically happy they both are in their new forever home.....Luke and Sam know what theyre doing, lets just all support them in doing it.

Thank God you will keep Abra happy as farm life. I just couldn't see her working as a police/swat team dog. After seeing your mate's facility, Abra had already experienced your farm life. what a relief. No matter how much you two try to validate your mate's dog training facility, I can see in your hearts, it's not your way! Abra landed in the right hands. Thank God she wasn't handed back as a puppy to the breeders, she was destined to lead a dogs life on The Farm.

As a mom of 2 purebred rescue American foxhounds, (think of the paintings of hounds with horses) they both were both past their ability to be what they were bred to do. So, I spend time letting them be hounds and hang out with horses and exercise. . In other words, I completely understand why neither will be "working" dogs. But Abra and Deisel will have amazing lives!

I have a friend who breeds working kelpies to train & sell. The puppies are exposed to a yard of sheep at 8 weeks of age. Those that will pass & go on to be trained & those that will fail & be sold as pets are decided there & then. Perhaps you could have some fun teaching Abra for search & rescue. You could hide people around the farm for her to tack & find. Then, if someone really gets lost in the bush she may be of use to go & help search for them. Of course, with you, too Luke.

Once you've been in the house with family.....there's no going back. There is a special family out there who will embrace Abra and the special gifts she has can be encouraged to be her true and loving self. There is a universal truth: 'Always go with the flow'; so perfect in describing Luke and Abra's binding relationship. Might very well be a sign that Abra's forever home will be at The Farm.

This was so informative about Diesel's DNA result. He has progressed enormously under your care. So lovely to see him so happy and settled. I am glad Abra won't be going down the protection road. She is smart as a whip, so in love with Luke and Rosco 😁 and this kind of life. I think if she had a choice, she wouldn't apply for any of those other jobs. 😊

There's a Search And Rescue org around the corner from me here (in Southern California): they have volunteer groups searching dog pounds for young healthy dogs, not puppies, but with high toy drive: these dogs are highly trained and paired permanently with a professional Emergency Response human, and these teams are deployed nationally and internationally. These dogs seems to have a great, enjoyable life and get their special person to be with for life. It's called National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. I guess this sort of placement is not available there for Abra. I love Abra! Thank you for thinking about her good!

Earlier in the week Luke said the Farm Pack were a bunch of 'misfits'. I'd add wonderful, talented and happy misfits and this is why I keep following them. I try very, very, hard not to tell Sam and Luke what they should do. But, my favourite doggies plus a dingo are the greatest misfits and I'll leave it that.

I have so much respect for both of you and for how well you are doing your training. The love and care you give to each dog is beyond comparison. Thank you for what you are both doing.

I learn something with each of your chats. On Diesel I learned a working dog only has so many years to perform, and unfortunately he has reached his peak so a farm wouldn’t be interested in him for herding. So what are you looking for as a suitable family for him? Diesel is a lovely dog, I can understand why he wants to herd the others. We have a golden retriever and sometimes border collie puppies try to herd him, he is a pale cream and looks just like a sheep, especially after a swim 😂. Abra is a fascinating dog, super-wriggler and wrestler. She is so full of character (like Miss Pie). It will be interesting to learn more about her training.

Abra's challenge requirements may lead to some interesting additions to doggies fun on the farm like a wall climb and a slightly taller dock to leap from. Roscoe would be right up there in wall / fence climb😁😁😁🥰🥰

Abra ended up with you guys so her best outcome is for her to be as good as she can be without all the seriousness of the job she was bred for. She will live a happy and fulfilling life and that is all she needs. You follow your instincts and all will be well for her. I’m guessing you are keeping her and I applaud that.

So interesting to know Diesel's makeup! I really appreciate how committed you are to finding Abra the best home that accounts for her breed and background. I'm sure it's not easy. I wonder whether her drive to work might be successfully channeled into something like flyball or agility, high level obedience, heelwork to music etc which would still provide her a good "job" and relationship with her person, while allowing her to live a full doggy life outside of that. Either way she is lucky to be with you at the farm for the time being!

My guess was that Diesel was a Collie x GSD x Kelpie... Although I'm suprised there was no GSD, his mix goes some way to explain his behaviour... I still think much of it is from years of lack of stimulation (i.e. not being 'worked'), combined with abandonment trauma... It's so lovely to see him thriving at the farm! Thank you Luke and Sam! 🥰

His health concerns are being investigated further and you are always making sure the pups have the best life possible. Abra is Luke's. It's a shame she missed her window as a dog that could go into the military, police force, etc. You both care about Abra and want the best life for her. She is so smart. As an outsider looking in, I'm glad you see Abra as being a dog that has options. I have friends with "Abra" dogs and they have gone on to excel in dock diving competition and agility work in the US. Maybe Abra would excel in those categories? I love what you do and support and applaud your dedication and love for every four legged animal that comes through the gates of your farm.

Abra is still only a baby really. A very smart baby. Hopefully someone perfect for her is out there. She’s a gorgeous little girl that’s learning so much at the farm. She’s not a threat or a danger, she just needs the right person that can handle her breed. She will be such an amazing addition to a family. Solid social skills, loves water, playful, loves other dogs, even exposed to cats! And last but not least she’s an absolutely gorgeous looking girl.😍😍

Luke and Sam. You guys are the experts of your program. We, as mere followers, watch with pride as each dog finds their way at the farm, with Luke's 'special' type of training. And it works!!! I was 'shocked' when you explained the life of a dog like Abra, in training. Personally, I'm pleased that you are both against the idea of putting Abra through this, only to then sell her into this world. Thankyou! On another note in this clip. Why do people think training just stops, once their dogs learn the basics??? How boring for this animal to not be taught and trained throughout their life. Training maintenance is an integral part of continuously building the bond with your furbaby. With my Jessie for example, all her walking life, we would still stop at every curb even though there was not a car in sight... She knew she wasn't allowed to cross that road, until we both looked both ways and I said "OK" This kept her street safe, as we lived on a busy main road. I would have only confused her, if we stopped at some roads and not at others. This included the invisible line she wasn't allowed to cross at the end of the driveway....but yes training maintenance is for life. AS ALWAYS, well done guys. Thankyou xo

Luke, I truly believe that Abra has it in her to eventually(in a few years) be a terrific alpha leader for your pack, just like Rosco and Freddo. The extensive behavioural training you are going through with her now, will guide you exponentially with training options for future challenging rescues you take on. Plus, she'll make for added security for the farm once she matures. I think Diesel would make a wonderful companion for adoption. Ideally, for someone where he would be the only companion, but I can see him enjoying one other brother or sister. He's great with cats, so that a bonus!
