Both the Southern and Norfolk & Western railroads, local to the game’s area, ran their diesels long hood forward. They were unusual in that they ordered them with the controls on the opposite side of the cab from most railroads, to make long-hood forward running easier. It was supposed to make road operating safer for crews, giving them the entire locomotive between them and hitting anything

It was more about operating flexibility and signal visibility. Having the control on the "left" side allowed the crew to see the signals along the long nose and still be able to see signals running short nose lead. Southern and Norfolk Western both also had dual control units.

In the UK, many of the lower "type" early diesels only had a single cab. The Type 3s, 4s and 5s, and some of the heavy Type 2's were double ended - which gave the drivers a better view of the road, and eliminated the need for turning facilities. For the small stuff, I believe originally the thought was that steam locomotives only had a single cab, usually behind the boiler, so a single cab diesel would not be an issue either. It was later found that single cab did present a visibility issue, and as the light local freight traffic dried up (moved to road transport), these lighter diesels were run in pairs, to enable haulage of the heavier freights, and always provide a clear view in the direction of travel. Most of the Type 1's were retired very early in life, which eliminated the problem of reverse running, the Class 20's (single cabs) continued to be run in pairs, as in that formation, there were still trains within their capabilities to haul.

Part of the issue with British diesels is they don’t have the gauge clearance for larger cabs. American diesels typically have an extra 3 feet or so in comparison, so it’s much easier to see around the locomotive body. Just another sacrifice the Brits must make to trying to fit as much power as they can into a tiny package.

Or they can do what they did with some of the 8s and semi permanently couple them together and rip the cab off of one essentially turning it into a b unit

@@HenryGengler That does also double the maintenance cost for things like wheels and traction motors though, it's not a very popular solution

The Whittier to Sylva section is a nice section. A nice slog up to dillsboro.

You probably already have the HP to run up from Silva, you just have to consider the time taken, mornings and evenings, to get from the interchange to the businesses down the line. Obviously, the AI passenger can now be left to its own devices, so that's less to worry about. What you will probably find useful is a bunch of local switchers (not necessarily the switcher class locomotives), to cover strategic areas - Silva/Dillsboro, Whitier/Ela, Bryson, and Akarka/Alarka Junc. That way you can run the main freight end to end, then go back along the way to deliver the drops to local businesses and collect the returns, before you run the main freight back to the interchange. You will need more HP once you open the grade to Andrews - a B65 (and probably a GP9) can solo manage 4-5 loaded Robinson coal cars, you'll need to triple head or split trains at Nantahala to reassemble up at Topton - anyways you look at it, it's a royal pain.

I already have local switchers for Whittier, Bryson, and Alarka so adding more for the expansion will be a natural progression

I've expanded to Andrews. You need some serious pulling power west out of Nantahala. You go through quite a bit of water too so top off your locomotives before you leave. I'm using two of G-16 Mogul to pull my four car passenger train and it barely is enough horsepower. Eventually as funds permit we will be buying larger locomotives with more power. I couldn't take on any more freight contracts due to having to having to keep an eye on my passenger progress. The new update helped me immensely. Once we acquire power we can handle more contracts now. Not much business for the copper mines so far and I'm on tier three. Enjoying the game ever since it came out. I beginning to understand how a railroad operates and why they do things in a certain way.

It sounds like a pure electric locomotive rather than a diesel electric. Needs a clattery & claggy engine belching black exhaust smoke when you open the taps.

Let's go ahead and back up." One of things I when a crew member says that, I'll move forward, then back up. It only takes them once figure out what they've said. Now watching your GP (Jeep) video I am going to save up for a couple for the heavy runs. Keep up the great videos. And I have been pointing people to your videos to see what Railroader is all about.

When you open up Sylva, it's pretty much down grade from Sylva all the way to Whittier, but can get pretty steep heading back to Sylva. I use C46 consolidations on my railroad and going from Whittier to Sylva they can manage right around 1900 tons unassisted up that grade, but "Just" make it.

It’s downhill westbound from Silva. 1% at mile 50. So it’s basically uphill from Bryson both ways. I find with the GP I use the 1.5% number on the load/grade chart for 1%grades but with steam I can use 1% for 1% to be able to maintain speeds in the mid teens.

With the new update, the AI can be set to run your passenger trains. They will stop at all the stations you have checked in the passenger list of any cars in the consist. Al will wait for all of them to load and unload and wait how many minutes you have it set in your settings. So far the only issue I've seen is making sure you have your passenger trains routed to the correct station platforms.
