This video will illustrate the differences between male and female faces. In part 1 of this video, I will compare male and female facial features, bone structure and musculature. In the in the second part of this video, I will do a demonstration. During this demonstration, I will review what we learned in the first part and teach you how to draw the nuances of the male and female face for artistic (art) purposes. During my demonstration, I use a pencil an eraser and a blending stick (stub) also known as a tortillion.
Lets look at the differences of the male and female skull first and then we will work our way up to the skin. Male and female children have similar skull shapes. But once children hit puberty, the differences start to appear. Testosterone provokes the growth of certain facial features in males, while female faces remain relatively childlike. The presence of higher levels of testosterone give men a thicker bone structure with more prominent bones. Male faces have a wider, more prominent jaw, chin and cheekbones (also known as the zygomatic arch). The physical size of the male skull is usually larger than the female skull. A very distinct characteristic of a male skull, is a protruding supraorbital ridge also known as a brow line.
Female faces are more rounded and tend to have a narrow jaw line. They have a softness that the male face lacks. It carries more fat than the male face, especially in the cheeks. Female faces tend to have thicker lips and a higher arch on the top lip. Female eyebrows generally sit a little higher than male eyebrows and they usually have a thinner and more arched shape, mainly due to plucking. The female nose tends to be smaller, shorter and have a narrower bridge and nostrils than the male one. Also, female noses often have a straighter or more concave profile. Men tend to have thicker and lower eyebrows than women. The male jaw line is wider than the female chin. It is also more muscular and square in shape. The lips are thicker and more full on a female. Also there is less of a distance between the arch of the top lip and the bottom of the nose.
Before we go on to part 2. I want to make this complex subject as simple as possible so I took notes for you! If you are watching this on youtube hit the link. If not, just go to my website Merrillk.com and type skull in the search box and download this cheat sheet for when you draw.

Well you know, the video deals with archetypes, or stereotypes, rather than real life. He wasn't drawing from real life after all, but trying to explain what the title declares. It's simple, and if used as just one source of how to draw faces/heads then it can prove very useful. As with all things in life though, we all learn as we go along, and we usually learn from lots of different places.

Oh thank you so much Mr.Merrill Kazanjian! I was looking everywhere for a video that explains the differences in the male & female bone structure and you sir are the closest I've come to explaining in a less complicated manner. You also show a list that I haven't seen in other videos on how the face of female and male faces are different and I thank you for posting your knowledge! I'm so subscribing!!!

Sounds like the paper Lusa! That shouldn't happen. Ive been using Borden and Riley "Bleedproof" #234 paper. (Yeah...fancy name) It is 110 lb. and made for the illustration markers that I use. Definately strong enough for color pencil, oil paint, everything.......Another suggestion- Try Liquin! Heres what you do. 1.) color with the pencils. 2.) Pour some Liquin on the side. 3.) Apply the Liquin with a soft paintbrush (It should move the color pencil around like paint!) -The Kazajimanian! :)

No. Water wont work. The color pencils are pigment (color) and wax. Water and wax dont mix. You could also use mineral spirits or turpenoid (both are the same thing).....The water would work with watercolor pencils. Those are a lot of fun too.

ofcourse the obvious if the obvious,but I dont see much differences in the skulls exept the jaws but ive seen women with some crazy wide/square jaws as well,we all have masculine and feminine features but the ones that dominate make your face look masculine or feminine. there is not a certain feature that makes someone look male/female but its the combination of features which do.

wider faces are considered a feminine trait just like short foreheads and ''high foreheads'' are considered a masculine trait, I think the drawings are very off, BUT most people have male and female features in their face/body.

If you compare a brother to a sister the brother will have a squarer lower jaw but thinner cheekbones, whereas if you look at the sister she will have a less square jaw and a more curvy jawline, but larger cheekbones.

In my experience, I've found out that it's easiest to draw women than men cause guys have a much more stronger facial structure (s); Ladies (on the other hand) are simply curvy lines to form the face and body to where only left thing to do is shading to create dimension, and that's how it's hard for me to draw male proportions due to the numerous amounts of shapes (not needed to create a female figure) depending on the characteristics of the human being.

@apolllos7 No they don't. Why would men have oval faces? If you look at a male face you can tell it clearly has more width and size to the jaw, therefore a more square or rectangular appearance. Women have thinner chins and jaws, which gives their face a more oval or round look.

you drew the female with a strong jaw, square chin and a large,sloping,bulbous masculine nose. women have pointed noses, rounded chins and rounded jaws. you also gave her a square hairline and an EXTREMELY high hairline, making her forehead large which is a male trait.
@8bit_pineapple

Actually men on average have larger brains, but that is because on average we are larger. Being larger implies more sensory information has to be processed; most obviously a larger surface area of skin implies more touch/heat sensory information. With more sensory information to be processed a larger brain is required. So if men generally have a larger brain because they are generally larger, the added brain size doesn’t make us anymore intelligent.
