Differentials - Why are they so Important for EV3 Robots?

Differentials are an essential mechanism in every car we drive today. They are also important for anyone looking to make a car-style EV3 robot. Differentials enable the drive wheels on an axle to spin at different speeds as the EV3 robot turns. Within the realm of LEGO Technic, there are two different types of differentials that we can use with our EV3 robots: the parallel differential and the 90-degree differential. Each type has its own applications. Learn everything there is to know about using differentials with your EV3 robot today!

Finally, someone slowed it down and did a close up! Now I finally understand how a (Lego) differential works! I'm just getting into Technic (and Lego in general) so I can build RC cars etc. I have some parts on order (including differentials) and thought I''d have to wait and play around when they got here to understand. Now I can understand all the other videos while waiting for my parts. Thanks

Nice video, quite clear! I have just one correction and suggestion. It's possible that it wasn't Leonardo da Vinci who invented the differential, but rather the Chinese, with their south-pointing chariot: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South-pointing_chariot Also, the differential has many other uses that you might want to explore in further videos, not just on drive systems. For example, its property to spin one output when the other is blocked can be used to power two functions from a single motor (each in one direction only, though), by mounting a ratchet on each output. Then each output can, for example, drive via crank its own pneumatic switch.

I just looked into those south-pointing chariots and they're fascinating! Thank you for sharing! Also, I've heard about using differentials for multiple purposes, but the idea that you shared is absolutely brilliant! I will absolutely do a differential revisit soon after I explore this some more.

great video, could you give me some advice please? Last year my FLL team was scoring 350 points 19 out of 20 times. We got to the competition and scored 0 in our practice round and 55 , 95, and 73 points Can you give me some advice to help my team this year?

The number one most important quality that an FLL robot must have is consistency. Back when I was in FLL, our team repeatedly tested and re-tested our mission solutions. We knew it wasn't good enough to have the robot work once or twice then move on, we wanted missions that would work every time. Make sure that you have reproducible results in your programming. There are several ways to make your robots more reliable, which I have discussed on this channel. Check out my videos on driving straight, using odometers to measure distance, slop distance, line following, and line squaring.

Thanks' I re-wrote your gyro follower and line squaring programs. I also remembered that the mats had 1/2 inch bumps in the mat. I found out that First changed the the mat material and and it loses traction during use over time. The team that won was the only team that used the tank treads. Could you make a video on turning with the gyro sensor because I can't find one on your channel. Thanks again for the advice!

I'm currently making a video on gyro turns as we speak! It will be out in September.

Sorry I replied with my other account! Thanks that will help me a lot, my gyro turn program is this: reset gyro, turn on right of left motor, wait until the gyro gets to the threshold value 90 deg, ect...., and turn off right or left motor. I was wondering if I was doing it correctly. This video is of my team's run last year I was wondering if you could tell me if I was doing anything wrong? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hq6aeJyG2NWdn2g.html Also what do you think of this season's mat and robot game? I think it looks very easy because my team is very good at using one-way doors and passive attachments. Last year didn't have many. Thank you so much. You have helped me become a good programmer and inspired me to start my own channel and helped teach four other FLL teams how to build a robot and program. Thank you, JP brix member of Tech Falcons team #20201
