For those that are curious, the letters ع and ح represent pharyngeal sounds. These are produced by pulling back the root of the tongue towards the pharynx, which is the highest part of the throat. Pharyngeal sounds are not very common across the world’s languages, being found mostly in Semitic languages such as Arabic and Ancient Hebrew (although Modern Hebrew lost them due to European influence), as well as in Berber languages and some languages spoken in the Caucasus region such as Chechen.

And not only! I'm learning Modern Hebrew myself, and even though I know most of its speakers don't pronounce it like this anymore, I actually do. 😁 It flavors the language real nice and it also serves as additional practice to get better at pronouncing Arabic. 😉

The alphabet is pretty easy to learn , I got in a few hours of practice (and a native speaker told me my handwriting looked great after two days of practice), and it's exciting to look at Arabic writing and recognize the letters even if I don't know what they mean. Putting it together with speaking and listening is a whole other challenge 😅
@fish3977
@fish3977 10 ай бұрын
The alphabet really seems like a specific form of IPA with the base letter changing it's "position" in mouth depending on the dots I spent double the time I usually do on my last monthly visit to the middle eastern food store as I were too busy just mouthing the labels. You mentioning good hand writing gave me an idea about actually starting to learn words by working on my other hobby - calligraphy and fountain pens instead of just playing the scary owl game when bored

To Maha: ض and ز are simple enough, but as someone who's been pronouncing Arabic since I was a kid and memorised a good portion of the Qur'an, I've always had difficulty making ذ and ظ sound different, so I always end up pronouncing them the same. I would *really* be interested in a video that differentiates the pronunciation between these two or even these four as much as possible.

Fun fact. Maha means not or "is it?" in Somali. Maha sidas (not like that) Maha miya (Isn't it?) Yakoub (Somali: Yacquub, C = ع) Yac - run Quub - spill Caanaha quub - spill the milk. Soo yaca - run (plural - towards me) Somali phrase: Hal mar ku yaca. هل مر كو ياع Hal is in Arabic, Somali means: one but like the one for "one piece", or female camel. Mar is also in Arabic "Mara"; means same thing. Ku is proposition Yaaca/yaca - run to Full meaning: Run to it for once (everyone run to it like a massive dash) Maya also used as name in Arabia means NO in Soomaal. I speak 6 languages.

@@marayas7618 yeah I love Arabic and Somali comparison as someone interested in languages. Somali does have some loan words from Arabic usually objects eg mis, Kursi, sarir, etc But they also share root words. Even Somali preserved long forgotten Arabic words. This is why we can learn Arabic fast. It's also true Arabic incorporated words from other languages and cultures it conquered such as Levant who spoke Phoenician, Punic, Aramaic or Sham region with the Akkadian, Assyrians, Kurdish and others. This is the reason why Arabic has different dialects and terms because some survived with their original indigenous people. Arabic: Hal arak (Will I see you?) Somali: Ma ku arki? But arak = arag (see). The word Hal means female camel in Somali. In Arabic it's naq. But naq is the pasture in Somali. In Arabic pasture is Almarai (written in Somali: Al maraci where C = ع). As Maha explained Ma prefix in Arabic means place in this case where animals graze. The suffix is raci and it's the same in both Somali and Arabic. Rac is to follow or look after animals like shepherd. Also it can mean follow. In Somali, ii so rac (come with me), si raci (make it go with it) So many examples. Luckily I understand both so I can dig their roots. Example of word no longer Arabic uses in every day convo is عب Cab Means to gulp or drink fast in classical Arabic. Somali means to drink. I also study Akkadian. Closely related. Much love.
