I have been driving automatic cars for a number of years because of painful joints and I would never go back to a manual car. Great choice choosing an automatic car. Enjoy safe driving for many years to come.

We start our car purchases with the amount we can spend and the type of car. We've never been picky about the make or model. After we narrow our choices down, we narrow them further by year and mileage. Then we start researching safety, reliability, warranties, and comfort of the top few cars. We've found that used cars at dealer lots that arent the brand that dealer sells can often be purchased for much less. After we've decided the best car based on price, needs, safety, gas mileage, reliability, etc we test drive it. If we want the car, we ask for their best deal and always ask for more off. If we have a top dollar we ask for that. We've only once had a dealer not come down to our price and even that dealer called us the next day with a better deal. We've bought cars very economically and honestly, all of them have been good purchases and lasted for years. We've had to buy several times because I used to drive 60 miles a day. Our best tip is this: We've given all 4 of our kids hand me down cars when they started driving. Good reliable cars but with high mileage. We didnt go buy them a new car. They'll beat up their first car anyway if they go to college and it's parked in a lot daily. We decided to give them a car and pay insurance as long as they get good grades in school. Them concentrating on studies and getting a good start in life is worth more than money to us.

Since it is mostly my car - I told my husband what I wanted in a new car & he did the research and narrowed it down to 4 makes and models all within about the same price range we put as our cap. We test drove all 4. That narrowed it down to 2. These were new cars so we just looked at the differences, which weren't many at all. And finally we had to go down to color. It sounds weird but we did not want a white or light colored car so that actually narrowed it down a lot. We finally found the one we wanted that was $5000 less because although new, it was last year's model. We didn't need to consider the age of the vehicle as we will keep it for 7-10 years and one year in age won't make much difference in trade-in value when it comes time to sell. And though we could have paid cash, it was such a large amount that we paid half in cash and loaned the balance & then just paid it off in one year anyway from our paychecks without having to dip into savings any further.

Congrats on reaching 15k subscribers!!! I really like your new to you car - lovely choice. We have been shopping for a new car since ours is 11 years old now. It was always a bit of a lemon and had to have a lot of work done on it over the years. It's a Subaru Outback with only 125,000 km on it. We have been preparing to buy for the last 2 years!LOL and you're right Jane it's a real circus out there. We have a big spreadsheet with the price and specs of all the cars we are interested in and have done many test drives in different road conditions. We get bad Winters here in Canada so we wanted to make sure the car was good in Winter even though the test drive models never have snow tires on them we can still tell if they will be okay or not. I think we are ready to buy now(we always buy in cash as well). We have spent many hours looking at YouTUBE reviews of the contenders and that has helped a lot too. If we buy now we have to wait until next January to get the car...can you believe that?Wow! Anyway - not much we can do about it.

Congratulations and I loved the Top Gear reference. We love that show. We have two old Hyundais which we've been happy with. So when the time comes to buy we will look there as they are less expensive than the Japanese and American cars. Car buying in the US is hard now too, for the reasons you listed. My son works for a Japanese manufacturer and he says their hours are being cut because of the difficulty of getting supplies into make the cars. I hope things will settle down soon. By the way my car is red also and it makes me feel like I'm driving an expensive sports car.

I drive a small super economical Japanese car. And I will keep I until it stops Our main choises were the 1: economical use of gas 1 l to 20 km 2 : the light car weight keep yearly taxes in the lowest catogory 3: being not very expensive the insurance is low and bonus was that at that perticular shop we got the best price for our old car ( we bought ours new 13 years ago, we went to 3 car dealers of that brand and haggled , paid cash) we test drove 4 brands to start with I think before we choose the brand.

Hello Jane and Micheal, I signed in to watch your video today and noticed you have reached 15k subscribers. Congratulations! . My husband and I also purchased a car this week. We had been waiting to private sell our big Dodge Ram truck for about a year now. We decided as gasoline prices skyrocket, that it was now or never. Our truck was 14 years old and needed a good bit of expensive body work so we looked at the car model we had been researching and found one about 6-7 years old in good condition and just went for it. It is a big expenditure for sure but now it’s accomplished and we move on. I so dislike shopping for vehicles because even when we’ve researched a model type, it still feels so vulnerable when it comes to spending years of our life and savings to purchase it. We both feel quite satisfied with this purchase and hope it brings us many years of economical service. Best of luck with your purchase as well.

The used car market is crazy on this side of the world as well. We have just recently had major flooding up the east coast of Australia. In Brisbane, the capital city of our state of Queensland, the flooding took out so many homes and all the vehicles. The water came up so fast there was no chance of getting the vehicles out. It's currently a sellers market here for second hand vehicles.

Congratulations! You will be happy with a smaller vehicle. I was in an accident at the beginning of Covid. I was so sad that Jim my Subaru cross trek was totaled. I didn’t want to go back in debt. We went to the used car lot with a list of vehicles listed online, I knew which one on paper looked the best, but we drove a variety. We ended up with 5he one that on paper was the best deal😂 it is not my Jim but a really good Subaru. Eventually, when I save for the next car and this market mellows out, I will get the new to me car and husband will get my current car. Enjoy your new car!

We purchased a used car for our Daughter’s 17th birthday - we have been saving for it since she was born - I put in the research and asked her to have an open mind - we found a 3 year Vauxhall Corsa - I was pleased as I wanted a British made car, with relative reliability and cheaper parts. For us it was as much about the future costs of owning and running the car as the initial purchase price xx
@bria2596

I did this recently, out of desperation because my car was 14 years old, and the mechanics did not like to work on it, and there was a used car shortage predicted (which has happened). Your description of the quandry is so accurate. I actually follow a very similar process. I asked for a specific drive it off the lot price (including all paperwork). I paid cash. My car looks a lot like yours, shape and color, Hyundai Elantra GT (GT stands for nothing - it has a back hatchback). I named her Rosie Bodacious. Best wishes to you, and me, Rosie, and your Kadjar. I hope we both get 12 or more years of happy, safe, driving from our "new" vehicles. This is my first automatic car, I have always driven manual transmission, but my "clutch" knee is very old. So, a manual transmission is much safer for me to drive. Win-win for all of us. Whew! Glad to have that taken care of and off my mind for years into the future.

A lovely car and really uplifting colour. I work in forestry and need to change my car . My late husband was very good at this and researched our car replacement at length with safety top of the list. I confess doing the car change myself is nerve racking and about the hardest financial decision I have faced. I had settled on a Dacia duster …. till I saw your video🤣 . One thing I hv learnt is if you go for a new one you pay £500 extra for colour so white will do as it would soon be brown with Welsh mud! Like you I need to get on and just do it … this week then! You have inspired me.

Sounds like a great purchase! My top tip is take someone along who really knows about cars, where possible. I too have a second hand car that is small, reliable, safe, and economical to run. I had narrowed down to two or three brands that were the right size/price and that I knew I would feel confident driving. Then I went to a dealer and took a friend' along plus her teenage son who had spent his life watching Top Gear and knew lots about cars. He pointed out a car I'd not immediately spotted and that was the one I bought after a test drive. It has been a great little car, I've had it 5 years and it's still going brilliantly.

Congratulations on getting the car you wanted, at the price you wanted! Looks like a good car! Will you name your new car as you did, Bert? Also congrats on getting to 15K subscribers! When i buy a car, I look for reliability, gas milage, cargo space (to carry things for D"IY etc) and of course a good price. I have found the Honda Fit to meet all of those requirements. They also hold their value, here in the U.S. and can last well over 100K miles with regular maintenance.

I’ve been following this with interest as we are doing the same. In 2008 we bought a second hand Subaru Outback Ltd, top of the range 8 years old , but with only 125,000 km on. We have extended family that drive Subaru’s and they said brilliant cars, will go 400,000km and last 20 years just service and you only need to replace tyres and batteries. In January 2019 I started saving as my car reached 300,000 km and 12 months ago the mechanic said it’s starting to rattle, etc. so we really started looking for a good second hand car. Prices were so close to new, but the warranty was only 3-6 months and they all had 80,000-100,000km so we bit the bullet this January and ordered our first ever new car in my husbands over 50 years of driving. We also went for a smaller car. I will have a red, Subaru Impreza probably by May, paying cash. We got extras, like tinted windows, important in our warmer climate and it was less than $1,500 more than a second hand 2 year old model, because second hand prices here have gone through the roof. I know this will be the last car we ever buy, due to our ages and they way the Subarus last. Well done on getting the right car for you.

Luckily, our son repairs and rebuilds firetrucks for a living so it is no big deal for him to help us select a reliable vehicle. It was so good to watch you in the decision making process. It would be great to see more “day in the life” of you and mike having to make real time spending decisions. Do you have debates in shops like my husband and I “you dont need more plants/fabric/tools…” dragging each other away.. even if it’s in budget or discretionary spend. I wonder how you navigate those impulse buys even if its something cheap in a charity shop?

good choice with your car. I was fortunate enough 5 years ago to get a new car for a good reduction as I have a family member working in management of the vehicle sales. it has given me a good service for the 5 years and hoping to get at least another 5 years or more out of it. I also get discounts on my services there. I don't do high mileage, so far it's done about 30 000 km in the 5 years, so it's like almost brand new. and its very low on consumption, it's a polo vivo tiptronic.

They just told us they cant cover it so now we are considering selling my husbands car to pay for part of it. Its a huge unforeseen and unplanned for expense.

I absolutely hate buying cars!! I do my best to research..compare.. and drive. I consult my son in law who is a very good mechanic and have him look over vehicle as I now buy used. I fortunately was able to pay cash and got a good deal. I just hope it will last many many years as I am retired and won't be driving near as much. Congratulations on your purchase.

Congratulations on the car purchase. I’d say that would hold up better for resale than the stepway. Was the duster just too big? I have a friend who has a family of 5 all tall and they find it good. Lovely to see Mike on camera, you make a lovely couple. I do tons of research and usually take out a subscription to which magazine which compares running costs and reliability. I also check KZfaq car reviews and I ask friends who have similar type cars for honest opinions. The reason why you see a lot of car ads on tv here in Ireland in January and February is not only to get new customers but also to reassure those who have just purchased one that they made the right decision. It’s all about post purchase dissonance which I learned about when I studied marketing. Those ads have to target your emotions and your logic. It’s fascinating how we are played. I needed a 7 seater for my family size so it restricted my search. Next time I think I’ll go for a hybrid or electric and won’t need such a big car as my kids should be driving their own at that stage and it will be automatic. I would be nervous as hell driving in France on holiday, it’s actually my biggest fear especially roundabouts. I think I would have to choose public transport because of my nervousness. Unless some KZfaqr could do driving tips in France video?

Always difficult buying a car especially a second hand one, glad you got what you wanted. How long have you owned Bert for? What has happened to him? Was he part exed? I hate buying cars, I've had my car for 11 years and will never sell it. Bit of a modern classic but only does 22 mpg so I think it's going to be parked up for a while. Good luck with the new car I hope it serves you well. Keep up the good work with the videos.

Car and home prices in the U.S. are ridiculous. Some cars are being marked thousands of dollars above list price. Apartment rents are going up by the month. Our son has been told his apartment rent is going up $1000 a month starting in June.

Congratulations on your new car. 👍 I am looking for a new car, not by choice, but due to the diesel prices, and a long commute to work. Looking for an electric car. Same as you. Delivery delays, expensive second hand cars, and I really don´t have the motivation to change the car, as I have the car that suits my needs at the moment. And yes, a tip, get an insurance that covers everything, even engine failure. That way you are covered, even if the warranty is out. 😊

Congratulations on reaching 15k subscribers. I really enjoy your channel. I have been saving for a car for quite a while as I want to pay in cash. I have a bit longer to go before I can make the actual purchase. I am considering a small SUV, such as the Honda HRV. My Civic is 7 years old and still going strong. Hondas are very well made and can last over 200,000 miles when taken care of. Enjoy your new car. Good job on the purchase. Can I ask, how far did you go on the test drives?

I have a 2010 Honda Civic going on 12 years, +156k miles. These cars can go over 200k miles. I'll drive it to Austin, TX from California and drive locally. When it dies I'll buy a used Honda Civic again. USA we finance cars, put a good down-payment, maybe 5k. or trade-in. The i currently own was purchased on line, I test drive locally. Then search for the one I wanted-quick decision since my previous died on the freeway driving to work on a Monday.. New car delivered to my credit union I was ģiven instructions and drove home Friday.

Hi Jane and Mike Happy and safe motoring in your new car. It is a great feeling going to buy your car for cash no loans to negotiate or commit to and usually extras given as less work for the garage to do win win all around. I bought our car over 3 years ago. I went to look at 3 second hand cars I was not impressed but as it happened a customer had ordered a new car and then decided on a different model I told the salesman I was interested at the right price. I bought it for € 3000 under our budget and €500 cheaper than the 3 secondhand cars as a cash buyer you are in a great position to negotiate with the salesman. The car I bought has all extras as well so I did very good 👍. The following month the savings began again for the new car fund. Jane there will be no stopping you now and you will feel so more comfortable driving a lefthand drive car in France. Well done to both of you. Anna.

I am actually going through this currently. I have a 9 seater people mover, but there is only 2 of us, our situation has changed since I bought it. With all the floods around, the demand for cars is quite high so I'm in a great position to ask any price and people will pay it. I already have a car in mind but just need to find a buyer for my car. This process only started last week so all I have done so far is worked out my 'pay out' figure, half bargained on the price of the replacement so I know roughly how much I need to sell mine for. I haven't advertised it yet but have had people asking if I'd like to sell it, so when the time comes to part ways with my beloved vehicle, I know there's interest out there already. I will let you know how all this pans out. 😊 😊😊

UPDATE: I have approached a couple of car yards who buy cars without trade-ins, one has come good with an offer I can't refuse, I haven't accepted it yet, but plan on asking a bit extra than what they have offered just to get the best price I can for it, either way I'll be selling my car and using leg power for a few weeks until I get another car, as the one I had in mind has been loaned to someone else to assist them with flood clean-up. I am not far from anything in my small country town and have coaches going to the nearby (over 100k away) town twice daily. I am thinking of going into the regional hub to source another car as there aren't many available in my town that suit my needs.

Buying a car is exhausting with all the thinking and deciding what’s best . I guess I’m lucky I bought mine in September when prices were normal . We know from the get go that we will only buy a Toyota straight away. We buy our cars brand new and we keep them for at least 20 years. My husband does all the maintenance on them and we seldom, if ever, need to take it in to a shop for repairs. We will research car for 4 to 5 years before we make the actual purchase.

We bought our last car in February 2020. We knew exactly what we wanted, as we were trading in the same make and model, but with many more miles on it (196,000). It was a Toyota Tacoma and could have easily gone another 150,000+. I shopped 2 dealerships, and while there were a number of newer pick ups, they had more miles than we wanted. I found exactly what I wanted at the 2nd dealership with less than 30,000 miles on it. Since then, we have hauled gardening supplies and camped extensively with it. A huge decision, and we make payments on it, but well worth it. Drives like a dream and we can do everything we need to do with it.

Congratulations on your "new to you" ride! Car buying is difficult in the U.S. as well. I haven't purchased a car in I think about 11 years. I live in the midwest U S. where we have difficult winters with a lot of snow and ice so the last vehicle I bought I wanted a small SUV that had all-wheel drive. I narrowed it down to about three or four different models that were all similar and I was also purchasing a pre-owned car. I wanted something around 3 years old with no more than 30,000 miles on it. That is exactly what I ended up finding in the price range I wanted to pay. I did business with a dealership outside of the metro area where I live about a 45 minute drive away but it was such an easy experience I can't even tell you Jane. U S. Car dealerships have terrible reputations. It is like taking a beating going to buy a car at many places. I basically negotiated the entire deal online before I even went to the dealership and drove the vehicle. I had a value for my car trade in and a price on the car I was buying. I had talked to my credit union for the best financing rate and when I went into the business office to do all the paperwork the credit manager said that he would meet the rate that I had gotten from my credit union and I explained him that he needed to beat that interest rate. At the time I was still working and only lived about a mile from my office so I drove very little except for when I would do an occasional weekend rescue transport drive. Fast forward to today and I'm not really driving anymore since my stroke but I still keep my vehicle because I do need to be taken to doctor's appointments and out for an occasional trip. Although I live in a city of over half a million people our public transportation is not great so owning a car is pretty much a necessity. I have put less than 20,000 miles on my car in the 11 years I've owned it so it is still in very good condition. I would like a newer car simply because of all of the newer safety features but I will not be buying a car anytime soon. At this point my car still runs wonderfully and probably is not worth much monetarily to trade in although car prices here are doing very strange things in the U.S. as well as it sounds like they are in Europe. I wish you many happy years with your new to you car. I know you will enjoy the automatic transmission!

@@FrugalQueeninFrance I probably will not buy another car. I will likely do ride share or pay a friend to drive me. If I were to buy a car I would likely pay cash since I don't work any longer. My disability covers my living expenses and I would have to take money from my retirement savings. Unless I am earning do much more in investment earnings that it would make sense to borrow. Interest rates will be going up here, predicted to raise 6 times this year!

We have NEVER bought a car on finance! We have an ongoing plan putting away some £each month. I understand that people do. We NEVER get a new car, always 6-12m old (but the price differences between new and old are now smaller so I guess that may change, though we have cars we plan to run into the ground). The monthly type of lease plans seem to be purchased for the pleasure of having a new car, tempting you further up the scale of luxury with each new vehicle give people the peace of mind if never having a large bill. But at the end of it all, getting a second hand car and running it till it starts to get unreliable is the cheapest form of motoring. BUT only if you are sufficiently disciplined to put money away for the purchase and as you do, money away for the repairs. We set off a few years ago to get a really small car cheap to run but ended up sizing up a model or two. It cost a little more to run on fuel but over the life of the car it worked out more economical, as the extra on fuel was more than the extra on the car price. The smallest cars are generally the cheapest to insure and In most demand, not only for the general population, but particularly for learner drivers and new drivers.

My husband can work on cars and can fix pretty much everything so we’ve always driven old cars. Some years ago he got each of us an 06 Toyota Prius and they’ve been awesome cars. They’ve given us no trouble at all and being hybrid they use hardly any gas. Well then my husband got himself a small van bc he drives for Uber and he can make more money with a larger vehicle. When car prices went crazy he decided to put his Prius up for sale for what he thought was a ridiculous price-way more than he paid for it, just to see what would happen. That very day he got someone willing to pay his asking price! So he sold it. But now he regrets selling it! Who ever thought we’d see a car market like this?
