I only ever flew one IMC in Casper, Wyoming but under instruction. Over in the US, they used to (not sure if they do anymore) fly; 1. 1 hour IMC 2. 1 hour night in the circuit 3. 1 hour night cross-country. ...all, under instruction. I absolutely loved IMC and I can't wait to start it here.

Liked this video a while back when you first published. Taking a second look as I'm now changing from my C172 to a PA28 to do my IR(r). Still found throughout most of this flight I was feeling anxious as though in the left seat myself. Thanks for sharing Jon. A very helpful insight into how to develop your awareness and capacity by pushing towards saturation. Felt relieved when I saw the familiar visual approach to R28 into Leicester - like a warm shiny beacon of home. Sorry to hear about Biggin, but all the best with Redhill.

Absolutely excellent video showing real-world IFR in UK’s unique ATC environment (where things are not quite as simple and joined up as in the US with it’s Flight Following etc). In fact, without local knowledge (now including some obscure new NATS website for advising Class D crossing requirements) in addition to a regular flight plan, is it any wonder our American and other foreign brethren find it a tad confusing to fly here?!

Superb. Many thanks for sharing your wonderful experiences - much appreciated. As someone who also flies from Biggin, it's lovely to see those familiar sights on video. A huge tip - if you are going to fly regularly in IMC, you really need an autopilot as this removes 80% of the workload, leaving you to concentrate on all the other stuff. Hand flying is best (in my view) practiced on a simulator, where it's safer! If you'd like to do a video from an airways flight, let me know (!)

Probably a bit out of date now, but I noted you checked Ts and Ps while lining up and after rotation - worth checking them at the same point as your "airspeed alive" call, as realistically if it's going to be a problem that's when it'll happen (before you go to full power it's unlikely, and after rotation it might be too late)

Brilliant video Jon and great comms with ATC. I agree with your comments that you should exercise your privileges under IR(R) otherwise what's the point. Just feel you're let down by no flight plan which enables support from London Control so you're exposed to undue risk due height and ATC restrictions which doesn't seem appropriate when in IMC with other traffic. Think you've really optimised the camera angles for a great view. Appreciate the effort you put into these videos alongside your day job!
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. Unfortunately a flight plan wouldn't have helped, and I'm not entitled to use the airspace London Control look after. An IR(r) holder cannot access Class A airspace.
@gasfiltered
@gasfiltered 6 жыл бұрын
Your airspace situation over there is mental. In the US, we often file IFR to eliminate worrying about airspace restrictions. If you're on an IFR flight plan over here, you just do as you're told; all the airspace lines just disappear. This flight was great, for someone who doesn't fly IMC often and with the added workload of all that wholly unnecessary dodging and weaving, you did a fantastic job.

Another fantastic video Jon. I also have the IR(r) rating and need to follow your example and get more practise in real world IMC rather than under the hood! (Despite the Big Sky safety stats I do get a bit concerned about fling IMC in class G with only a "subject to this and that" traffic service.) I read your reply to the comment below regarding using the autopilot. I fly a PA28 with the same autopilot and whilst it will follow a gps / vloc track from the 430 I find it is just as easy to fly it in heading mode making fine adjustments as necessary. So if your AP works in heading mode I would definitely recommend using it when things get busy, or all the time. I find the reduction in workload it provides surprisingly significant. Plus I don't have to worry about returning to my instrument scan after a bit of nav/comm tuning to see a 30 degree bank angle! lol

Great video, thank you for sharing. I wonder if London would have been happy to have you a little higher if you had a full IR? This video also made me very grateful that I fly an aircraft with an autopilot. It makes IMC days like this so much easier when you can focus on the radio and nav and let the aircraft fly itself. Couldn't agree more that those with IR(R) on their license should get out and use it. Finding yourself in IMC and needing to fly an approach to minimums 23 months after your last renewal doesn't seem like it would end well.

U.S. IFR pilot here. Wow, I have a lot of respect for you. Hand flying and what seemed like constant frequency and transponder code changes. Lots of radio talking required. // If you flew IFR in the U.S. you would feel like you were on vacation. Went 700 NM last week, same transponder code the whole way. Simple GPS point to point just going around some military restricted space. Your complete hand off is done controller to controller. You just switch frequencies and say your call sign level 8,000 feet. Great flight!
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Charles. This isn't your typical IFR flight, as I'm on a restricted rating, which is an inferior qualification to the full IR. Perversely, it's somewhat harder to fly this way, than if on a full IR, as you're pretty much on your own, weaving around controlled airspace, outside of the airway/controlled system.

I like watching your videos. As a pilot in the US it is interesting to see the differences between flying in the US and anywhere else. When we get our instrument rating in the US it is not restricted. We can do as little or as much with it as we wish. If you want to fly your first approach to minimums in hard IMC then go for it. I am curious as to the difference between your restricted IR and your full IR. I could google it but if you have a video explaining the difference...??? Thank you for your videos. I am a commercial rated pilot with about 1700 hours of flight time and I really do enjoy your videos. Not only are they very well made and produced but they provide a glimpse into how things are done over in the UK and I find that very interesting. Thanks again for your great work.
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg. For the full IR you need to do pretty much the ATPL studies for the following subjects: Air law, Aircraft general knowledge - instrumentation, Flight performance and monitoring, Human performance, Meteorology, Radio navigation, IFR communications. You then need 55 hours of practical training. The IR(r) is a 15 hour course, with a very slimmed down theoretical knowledge exam, and a flight test. It is only valid in the UK, (which obviously suffers from inclement weather quite a lot) and allows you fly down to the IR minima, but it's recommended that you apply more conservative minima (ie +200ft, with absolute min on a precision approach of 500ft). Minimum vis for take off and landing 1500m. You also can't fly in class A airpspace, which means the airways and the TMAs are out of bounds. It's a very useful rating for the UK climate, but many people see it just as a 'get out of jail' card. If the skills are regularly practised, there is no reason why you can't use it more extensively, as I do.

Great video Jon. I'm an under practised and expired IR(R) holder. How do you feel being under a Basic Service (rather than Traffic or Deconfliction) when IFR in IMC outside of controlled airspace? I understand non radar units can only offer a Basic but obviously you can't practice "see and avoid" for traffic avoidance.
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
You do what you have to do, and get the best service you can. I've yet to ask for a deconfliction service, because I imagine I'd be vectored all over the place to be honest, but I wouldn't hesitate to request avoidance headings if the traffic was a real conflict. I often try to route in airspace where I can get a radar service, but there are gaps. It's a big sky, but there are risks.

It is for IFR outside controlled airspace in the UK, if not on a proper IFR flight plan. My instrument rating is restricted, and so I don't have access to the airspace where you'd be under proper control, such as the airways etc.

That’s really interesting...Didn’t know a Restricted IFR Cert existed..What’s the difference in training from a Full IFR rating vs Restricted? Seems kind of crazy to offer a restricted rating , as I would think they would want everyone to have a a full rating...Thanks for the info and safe flying.
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
It's a feature of our climate. We have a lot of IMC days! Some thing the rating is designed to 'get you out of trouble', although there's nothing official. It allows you to fly in IMC in all but Class A airspace (which we have quite a lot of in parts of the UK - especially around London). You can fly procedures etc. The theoretical knowledge studies/exams are very light, and the practical training very short. We can only use it in UK airspace.

Just a quick question from someone who doesn’t fly in the London area, is there a reason you don’t request a transit of London City? Is it a glide clear issue or just not a chance of getting it? (I’m a controller too)
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
There is a glide clear issue, certainly west of City. You can just above go overhead, but I don't like to, it's tight from a glide clear point of view. Even on vectors to BIggin, east of City, in the city zone, it's quite congested.

Why don’t you program the 430 to remind you on fuel tank switches? You would retain the “ 12 minutes” on the left tank when you landed when you fire her up again if you don’t refuel. If you are imc it seems crazy to add fuel tank switch timing to non precision approaches, holds, etc. my 2 cents

The ceiling mount is just a gopro shoe mount that comes with every go pro camera, stuck the ceiling of the aeroplane - obviously, you'd need to check with your aeroplane operator before doing so, as they are very difficult to remove afterwards. I also use the gopro suction cup mounts, and another shoe mount just under the dash.

Do you operate your aircraft as a share and create your videos when utilising your time in the aircraft or do you own and operate it wholly by yourself?

I own 1/6th of the aeroplane.

Thanks for the information. Have your economics changed significantly since leaving Biggin Hill?
@TheFlyingReporter

Very slightly overall. We took up Hangarage which was more expensive...fuel, landings cheaper.

The Flying Reporter do you intend on making videos to assist people who would like to venture into aircraft ownership in part or full? It would be I retesting to understand the added negotiations or pressures associated with use of allocated time or owners maintenance

I thought 7000 was a VFR squawk only? is it because you are outside of controlled airspace? I'm an armchair pilot only, so excuse me for any stupid questions. Nice video, as always!
@TheFlyingReporter

+TumzDK 7000 is a conspicuity squawk, can be used regardless of flight rules in the UK.

Not everyone is a pilot, although I am familiar with most of the basic terms used, I didn't figure out it was supposed to be IMC. (by coincident I read this comment.) A minor note/caption would have been really helpful :) But i don't want to be too picky, you make some great videos which show a realistic view of flying. And you channel among with others like 'Friendly Skies' made me have an increased interest in flying as a recreational pilot. Going to have an introduction lesson next week! Thank you for all the time and effort you put in! Much appreciated! :D Greetings from The Netherlands! :)

I passed my IMC test last weekend, good to see you using it properly and I couldn't agree more regarding using it properly. Two little points: I think you could do with pumping up your tyres a little bit perhaps? And secondly, why don't you use the autopilot in IMC, I understand it's quite a basic one but I'd imagine it would help the workload - is it not certified in IMC? Oliver.

Thanks. The autopilot is not in great shape sadly. I think it can handle headings..that's about it.

Why not just ask to fly higher? You're already IFR so it seems you should be allowed into the LTMA.
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 жыл бұрын
Not with only an IR(r) rating. You need a full IR to use Class A airspace.

Definitely a much different IFR System then here in the states..An IFR flight here , we file to get in the system , contact ATC or Flight Services to get our clearance , and then we are with ATC immediately, with a clearance, Squawk code etc.. Seems like there’s a bunch of extra things you have to think about in your IFR system, which triples your work load. I can’t believe you have to request service during an IFR flight , especially while you are in IMC. Seems to be an antiquated system compared to ours. Or perhaps I just don’t understand your system ? Also, here, we could request higher to get above the clouds ..9 out of 10 times , they will give you higher...Just flew IFR to Ocean City New Jersey last Thursday and just before Philadelphia airspace, ATC cleared us direct to Ocean City, right through their Class Bravo airspace. Having said all of that, great job hand flying...I don’t have an Autopilot in my Cherokee , but do have an old AutoFlite Wing leveler if I need it,..Hand flying is definitely stressful in the soup , but great practice..Keeps is sharp !

Hi Gary. I fly IFR in a restricted instrument rating, which doesn't allow me the same privileges as a full IR, hence why I have to take such odd routings, and get whatever service I can get from ATC. Ironically, even though I have an inferior rating, that I didn't have to do too much training for, relatively speaking, it's probably harder work! With a full IR, you could fly as you do in the US.

Why do you use oh instead of zero? Is there something wrong with your brain? Dont do that again. Zero is a word and a number.
