this was done for the benefit of tv, i'm sure they had a back up plan, to drop someone into the sea like that and then try to find him would be foolhardy, it's extremely risky. A strong swimmer with open sea currents like that wouldn't make much difference from a dummy. the best sell of it was the part where they had 30 mins fuel left. yea, right. i can see it already, " umm, control, we can't find John after dropping him off for this tv show, what do we do now? we're running outta fuel"

@winterstellar Point being that there is nothing mysterious there, the direction and speed of the current is known now and so on. The point in the show was to show how difficult it is even today to find a lone survivor in open waters, and that it would be more difficult in the past when the accidents happened that helped create the myth about something strange going on there:)
