Welcome to Gem Dictionary by The Gem Academy where we explain the terminology used for gemstones. Let’s learn about diffusion treatments…
Diffusion treatment is an interesting one… sometimes referred to as bulk diffusion and surface diffusion (often referring to depth of diffused elements)… this treatment has limited applications and can only be successfully achieved on particular types of gems (namely corundum and feldspar). This is a relatively uncommon treatment, and treated gems typically have a significantly lower price than a natural (untreated) equivalent and even a lower price than an equal quality heated equivalent.
