In "Dig Deeper Episode 44 - The Jack of Plate Armor, Part I Recovery and Conservation," Jamestown Rediscovery Senior Conservator, Dan Gamble describes the excavation and conservation of a very unique and 400 year old piece of armor, a Jack of Plate. One of only a few complete samples in the United States, this armor was perfectly suited to the needs of the earliest English colonists.
"In Dig Deeper Episode 45 - The Jack of Plate Armor, Part II Blacksmithing a Replica," (to be released in mid-February 2002), Blacksmith and Historic Trade Interpreter Shel Browder, discusses how aspects of a 400 year old Jack of Plate armor (excavated at Historic Jamestowne) influenced his design of a wearable replica. He also describes the methods he is using to construct this Jack of Plate armor that will subsequently be part of future historical interpretation programs at Jamestown.

Thin pieces of metal that been in the wet earth for at least 400 years. And it was almost lost forever because the general opinion was that the whole fort was washed away. I love seeing all these finds that should not have survived this long, but there they are! Thank you for picking our history out of the soil.

One of the 16 known surviving jack of plates will be on exhibit at the Jamestown Settlement Museum in mid March!

Is the soldier's pit an area where things were intentionally discarded by Jamestown residents? Since the jack of plate armor looks mostly complete, why would such a (presumably expensive and time consuming) piece of armor have been discarded by a soldier? How 'broken' would armor have to be to be discarded and not fixed? (also, just a side note, the video description says that part II will be released 20 years ago - not next month)

Interesting presentation. I look forward to part 2. Do you have any idea of cost to buy, produce this armor? Could you discuss the size of the plates and was the armor being produced in the Colonies?
