Another good idea for Alaska. As you’ve noticed, snow in Alaska, once you walk on it once, gets really hard thereafter. So get yourself a set of large snowshoes. When it snows strap the snowshoes on, and stomp down all of your paths. They get solid overnight and you have easy walking trails for your muck boots, and no need to shovel all winter long. If you didn’t see my Nalgene comment on your previous video, it is a great idea. So look for that. Good luck! Hope you enjoy the best state in the Union!

Yes, the tramping paths with the long snow shoes is a "thing" for sure. I use my long ones first thing to break trails for the dogs to easier toilet time! I also break trail to the mailbox which is a good distance, but not as far as your driveway!! Dang! Still, I do my best to walk straight and take sort of smaller steps forward to break the snow down and render a really good trail actually. Going out then returning maybe a bit wider. Such a simple minded task, but ends up really making a significant difference traversing the heaps of deep snow!

if your not using the water to drink ..and its just for animals and washing , you can put a pot of snow on the stove and let it melt .... will help you out till you can get moving properly... as for the spring ... set up a clothes line type contrapment and add hooks to the line .. then fill your buckets and hang them from the line and reel it up to the house ..

Normally we would be here from the beginning of the season to keep it under control with the side by side plow. It’s just gotten too deep and compacted for anything but a loader at this point unfortunately.

So glad this is well in your past !!!! A great look at the reality of what the depth of the snow fall really is. Thanks for filming the struggle you went thru upon returning. How long did you have to wait to get your drive ploughed ??

Oh, it’s not plowed out yet. We’re still parking at the road and hauling stuff back on the sled. I’m getting quotes from $500-$800 to get someone with heavy equipment. The snows just to deep and frozen for a regular truck plow. Ive not got funds like that. We’re just gonna have to make do until it melts.

It would make things easier. Unfortunately all our extra funds need to go towards finishing the house. Doing the entire build out of pocket is keeping our bank account drained. Trying to save up to get metal for the outside. I don’t really want to go through much more weather with just the house wrap.

Can you rent or purchase a gas snow blower? Seems it would be a key investment!!!!

A neighbor let us borrow his gas snow blower but the snow has about turned to ice a few layers down and the blower couldn’t get through it.

Question does your water tip over in the truck (ever

Yes 😢 we try to position it so it doesn’t but sometimes if we hit a pot hole they fall over and either split (twice) or the lid pops off and we loose all the water. Luckily it’s only happened a few times.

two more months, need a tractor really bad, and lean- to and more lean-to.
@melaniedriscoll2286
@melaniedriscoll2286 2 ай бұрын
For winter, is it possible to build a lean-to just out of trees on your land? No milling necessary to get flat boards, but maybe for the rooftop just smaller trees lined up and secured for your lean-to roof. This could be for a wood cache, just so you don't have to go so far in the winter for your wood! The house serves as one good dry wall and a lean-to wind & water shield - and it won't blow away!

Why are you buying water. All that snow on your jeep could have been put into pots and sit on the heater. You also need a chain saw to cut you some firewood.

Am I the only one or are others a tad concerned about the dogs' behavior?
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead 5 ай бұрын
When I fell or just in general? Overall they are very well behaved. Gidget is still just a pup and got a bit over excited when she seen mom on the ground. Tess and Kyzr both have AKC performance titles, Hanz was a Covid pup so I never got around to showing him but he may be the calmest and sweetest of them all. But yes, Gidget is still a bit exuberant.

We’ve actually been in Alaska seven years and were prepared for winter. If you watch back through our videos in November you’ll see why we weren’t here to maintain the snow and how it got too deep for even professional snow plows.

In a previous video you said you have lived in Alaska for 7 years. And yet you don't appear to have given much thought about the basics of living in a place that receives a lot of snow. No plow, or snow blower, or snowmobile, or firewood. Maybe rural living isn't for you.
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead 5 ай бұрын
Grew up in the country, rural living is all we’ve ever done. We do have a plow on the SxS but having left in the fall we weren’t here to maintain it. It’s just too hard packed for anything but heavy equipment at this point. Same thing with the firewood, normally we would have two years worth ready to go. Summer was spent building the house. We got the shed built and started processing firewood but left before completing it. It’s just a matter of playing catch up now.
