Generally laying a penny on a headstone indicates, simply. that someone paid a visit. Also to the military aspect, penny = visitor, nickel = boot camp friends, dime = served together, and a quarter indicates the visitor was there when the serviceman/woman died.

According to the story, he said that Booth newspaper fell into the hands of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, as well as photographs of the body, which disappeared within a few days, just as his diary also lacked leaves. It is likely that the shadow of the plot was with Stanton.

I know I'm a few years late. But good content. Coins on grave sights usually are a symbol of respect. It's been a tradition for centuries with Jewish culture, except they use stones as a symbols of permanent memory, a stone lasts forever. Just watch the closing scene in Shindler's List. The real person and their counter part, the actor placing stones on Shindler's grave in the Jewish Garden of Hero's in Israel. Shindler wasn't a Jew, but he was a hero to the Jew's he saved. Back to Booth. If that's his grave then the penny represents the face on the coin. Go Figure.

His full name was Hugh Louis Paine, the man Herold supposedly led to Seward's was Lewis Thornton Powell, who was Paine's third cousin. Herold and Booth hid out on the farm of a man named Jones for a week. Oddly, that man wasn't charged with aiding and abetting the conspirators.

OneifbyLandMike I Had heard that the man who tied the hangman knots took a short cut in the case of Mary Surratt because he didn't think they would ever hang a woman even up to the last second. One of the men's last words before the rope drew taught was "Mrs.Surratt is innocent!" Careful examination of the photos do show less wraps on Mary's hangman knot.I hate to tell you none of them should have been hung or that they should have not shot Gary Gilmore who's last words were "Let's do it" -Gary Gilmore.Later it became a slogan for Nike "Just do it".Sort of sick to think to build a brand so powerful that countless kids have die for a pair of those shoes : ( I admire your unpopular effort in these people and thank you for sharing it with me.

Traditionally, coins left on a grave marker is a way to let family member's of the deceased that you have visited and paid your respect. The denomination of the coin indicates the relationship you had with the deceased. Military version goes as follows; Penney, no relationship, just visiting. Nickle, went to basic training with deceased. Dime, served in a unit with individual. Quarter, was present when they died.

I was told John Wilkes Booth is not buried there because the man they shot was not John Wilkes Booth. John Wilkes Booth was known for having beautiful white flawless skin (he was gorgeous! Most photos don't show his beauty). The man shot had reddish hair and freckles and that was not the real John Wilkes Booth) Actress Kathy Bates great grandfather knew John Wilkes Booth in his older years and wrote a book about him in the early 1900's.

Initial published news reports accused the Catholic Church in Rome as being responsible for Lincoln's death , partly due to the fact that Booth had attended a Catholic school in Maryland, along with Mary Surratt's son John, who ALSO had been involved in the conspiracy. John Surratt successfully escaped to Canada and then made his way to Rome, where he served in the Papal army. Federal agents pursued him and he escaped again to Egypt, eventually returning to the U.S. after the statute of limitations had run out on his suspected involvement. Afterwords, he did travel the country giving accounts of his adventures to fascinated audiences. One theory is that the huge amount of Union Army soldiers who replaced the long dead protestant Yankees from New England were German and Irish, thus, bringing a large population of Catholics into the country who could carpetbag and take over the formerly protestant owned southern institutions. Lincoln had been AGAINST such ideas and wanted to go EASY on the south, even letting former soldiers and leaders of the Confederacy hold office in the new south. Lincoln cared more about the peaceful reunited states than anything else. The conspirators DID have an attachment to the Confederate government , as Powell had been a member of Mosby's Rangers and a cipher machine was found in the hotel room of conspirator George Azerodt. It is a FACT that during the war, Lincoln ordered Union cavalry officer Ulrich Dahlgren to raid Richmond and KILL President davis and as many Confederate leaders as possible. Confederate cavalry under Jeb Stuart crushed the raid and Dahlgren's official orders were found on his body. Those orders have been verified as authentic. This action by Lincoln may have caused his own death....out of retaliation. One clue is the cryptic comment about Lincoln made by General Lee. Just after Appomattox Lee praised Lincoln saying : " I have surrendered as much to Lincoln's kindness as I have to Grant's artillery" Days later, upon hearing the news of Lincoln's murder Lee's tone was different. He said that the murder of a President was " unprecedented in our history". Hmmmm. A cool response with possibly a slight reference to the INTENTION of Lincoln to kill Davis FIRST. Booth was a fool who hurt the south greatly by killing Lincoln. He did NOT LISTEN as he was standing with a dagger just feet away from President Lincoln during his second inaugural address, where Lincoln stated : " with malice towards none and charity for all". Booth only paid attention to Lincoln's public remark right after Lee's surrender where he said that he now wanted to give blacks the right to vote. That remark set Booth off to murder Lincoln, instead of kidnapping him. For some strange reason, authorities have refused investigators requests to compare DNA from the surviving section of Booth's spine in the Smithsonian to DNA from Edwin Booth's body buried in Massachusetts. Many believe that the man shot in Garrett's barn was NOT Booth, but, former Confederate officer and prisoner of war, James W. Boyd.......SAME initials as Booth and a prisoner personally released by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton only weeks before Lincoln's killing. One Confederate soldier had told the Union cavalry that it was NOT Booth in the barn with Herold, that it was Boyd. Booth's own doctor came to the deck of the Union gunboat , " The Montauk", in Washington to inspect the dead body from Garrett's farm. The doctor REFUSED to confirm that it was Booth !!! he said the dead man had red hair and Booth's was black.....he said the dead man had freckles and Booth had NONE....he said that he had recently removed a mole from Booth's back and that the dead body had no such mark from the removal !!!! Why would Booth HANG AROUND Garrett's farm for 3 whole days, waiting to be caught, when his previous behavior was to move constantly from place to place ?? People forget that Booth was an ACTOR....someone who used makeup and disguises on stage !!! He may have met Boyd at that farm and then LEFT, as Boyd stayed behind . Some people accuse Stanton of being involved in Lincoln's murder.....he was a rabid " Radical Republican" who wanted to severely PUNISH the South, in return for all the dead Union soldiers ! Stanton secretly possessed Booth's diary and did not admit to having it for a long time. When the diary was finally inspected, it had 18 pages missing !!! Just like Nixon's missing 18 minutes from the Watergate tapes !!....where some believe Nixon discussed the assassination of JFK. Most weird of all is the following story. One of the richest and most powerful men in all U.S. history was John D. Rockefeller, who parlayed his early investments in the newly discovered oil of Pennsylvania into a a huge enterprise : Standard Oil. The man who held those oil stocks FIRST,but, was impatient and sold them was JOHN WILKES BOOTH !!!! HE would have been the giant oil baron of Esso and Exxon !!!.....but, NO.....he had to go NUTS instead !!!

The American Civil war was a between the Masons and Jesuits. The Surratt family hailed from what is now Clinton, MD, it used to be called Surrattsville. The Jesuit Order was first brought to America in what is now St. Mary's City, MD. The chief justice of the United States was Roger Taney, from Adelina, MD a stones throw away from Surrattsville. Taney ruled on the infamous Dredd Scott case, against citizenship for black slaves. The first Bishop of the Catholic Church in the US was John Carroll, a Jesuit, who founded Georgetown University. The number of Vatican ties to the civil war are numerous. The Jesuit parishes at the time also utilized slave labor which is now acknowledged.

Mary Surratt and Her son John Surratt were tried using the same evidence 20 years or so apart. Mary was convicted by a Military tribunal and even the tribunal nor the executioner believed she would hang. John was tried in a New York Court room and was acquitted. Now the part that amuses me about her execution is they kept an umbrella over her until she was set to hang so she did not get sunstroke they also tied her skirt down in 2 places instead of just tying her ankles so that her modesty was in tack.

George Vreeland Hill--Whose dream, and which vision? Lincoln's dream was a united, free nation where slavery was no longer extant. Booth's dream was to exact retribution and revenge against a POTUS (Lincoln) when the South lost the Civil War. Today we have a failed political candidate (Hillary), a former POTUS (Obama) , and a host of office holders (Pelosi, Waters, etc.) , media outlets (CNN among others), and actors (a plethora of those) whose actions look more like revenge against a sitting POTUS (Trump) because they lost an election and who adhere more to Booth's ideals than Lincoln's.

J.W.Booth supposed body was never formly identified,no photos Nothing, the soldiers whom murdered the man in the barn agreed it was not Booth on the ground so where does that leave us?

I'm pretty sure if you spent 12 days in the wilderness, tortured by exposure and hunger, you wouldn't look like yourself, either. Besides, John's mother and siblings positively identified him by a gold plugged tooth he had when he was still alive.

Considering the fact that the war has been over for some time now and I'm sure Booth would be dead by now I don't think it leaves us anywhere. President Lincoln has served his country, he was the 16th president, Trump is our 45th. Again, the war is over, has been over. If Booth was not killed that night...do you see where I'm going with this. It goes nowplace.

If you look beyond home plate of the Washington Nationals stadium, you'll see Fort McNair, which was called the Washington Arsenal. The old courthouse is still there. That's where the conspirators were tried. The tennis courts are where the four were hung and originally buried.

That is a myth. Booth is definitely buried in the plot but it is unmarked. The unmarked marker that is often thought to be Booth's is actually a foot stone of another family member according to most resources and workers at the cemetery.

I had always read that After Booth was shot at the barn, his body was transported to an ironclad and moved to some prison where he was burried under a floor somewhere. Assuming this to be the real story, where exactly is he hiding out? Or does anyone know more they can relate?? I would have thought photos would have been made in this high profile case to show he was indeed actually dead.

Military graves and coins - the denomination of the coin indicates the relationship of the visitor to the deceased. In training together, served together, were in combat together or was present at death.

They were all buried right there where were hanged right in front of the wall by the gallows, no grave markers no separate cemeteries. You can even see the open graves in the pictures, they had no fancy funeral ceremonies for these conspirators.

No one knows for sure where JWB is buried. There is no headstone in the family plot that bears his name. The stone the people place pennies on is the foot stone of his sister's grave, but many mistakenly believe it's his unmarked headstone. Also, on Powell's headstone I couldn't help but notice they misspelled the word "Cavalry." "Calvary" is where Jesus died.
