Digging The Greats

Күн бұрын

The movie Dune 2 is out, and features Christopher Walken as the Emperor. This is crazy not only for Dune fans, for Christopher Walken fans, but also for fans of early 2000s big beat electronic music!
Today we're diving into the Dune Cinematic Universe (albeit, a loosely connected one) to see the connections between the new movie and the 2001 song "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim. Then I'll be breaking this song down because it turns out, it's FULL of great samples, famous bass players, and 90s hip hop references.

Fun fact: A lot of people assume that Walkens appearance in this video was a factor in him being cast in the new Dune film. Yet it wasn’t. The director Denis Villenueve wasn’t even aware that Walken was in this music video until after Walken had been cast in the film. It is however likely that his involvement in the music video led to Walken wanting to do the film role.

He’s probably worked with several people who’ve been in the other versions of the movie. If the surrealist German director had gotten his intended 70s version made, a young Walken would have been great as Feyd-Rautha, not that Sting wasn’t excellent for the 80s one.

when I saw Walken in the movie I immediately thought about the video for Weapon of Choice (and of course more cowbell) but I would have never thought that the song has a connection to Dune.

There's a third important bass player you forgot to mention in the video... Fatboy Slim himself! Before becoming one of the biggest names in electronic music of the 90s he played bass in the band The Housemartins during the 1980s. They were really good, if a bit reminiscent of the Smiths, and you probably know them for songs like Bow Down and Happy Hour.

This is a really good video. I remembered being a bit irritated that my friends didn't hear the similarities to Black Sheep with the lyrics ("Black who?" was the response, and for that it made me feel old even though I'm the same age as them). What I like about Fat Boy Slim, most don't think that his records were using tons of samples. Quite complex use of different audio samples, yet it sounded so catchy and simple. Norman Cooke eh? completely forgot he was in Beats International.

When I saw Christopher Walken in the Dune 2 promo pictures, I laughed my head off, but nobody else understood why. Glad to see others that appreciate his casting! Now the question is, was he casted as the Emperor because of the Fatboy Slim video? Can anyone ask Denis Villeneuve? Edit: according to someone's comment, it was a coincidence.

Wow, you are also Digging Greats in the UK big beat genre. Then you should look into the Chemical Brothers with their infamous Schooly D sample and Q-Tip and K-os collaborations. Or how Liam Howlett sampled Ultramagnetic mcs Critical Breakdown for at least 6 tracks over Prodigys' complete discography.

The actress from the first Dune version who played Chani ALMOST played Catwoman in 1992’s “Batman Returns”, with Walken, but Burton found her to have an annoying personality, so she ended up playing a trans woman villain in “Ace Ventura” instead.

Would it be too much for you to make TWO Dune-relateed videos? We need you, and only you, to break down the 1977 song 'Sandworms' which may have one of the greatest funk bass lines OF ALL TIME, no exaggeration, and was part of a strange sci-fi themed instrumental album literally called... Dune. What? You know you have to do this, right?

Walken as Emperor Corrino was one of the worst castings in a high-profile blockbuster in a long time. In fact, now that I've sat with my Dune 2 viewing for a couple weeks, I think the only really great casting was Florence Pugh. Chalamet, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, certainly Jason Mamoa, maybe Josh Brolin... none of these very expensive actors were really needed, except to draw attention to the movies as a spectacle (vs creating a compelling story). Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling played great roles but they were so inconsequential to the story in the movies... why bother?
@chrisjfox8715
@chrisjfox8715 5 ай бұрын
@@slavadabadoo Tim and Zendaya did much better than I expected. I'm not mad at their casting. Bautista, Skarsgard, and Rampling were great. I love great casting no matter how small the role. And I don't think their roles are as small as you're making them out to be. Case in point, Javier Bardem I loved in the first one. In this one, it felt like they were being a bit too comedic about him being in awe of every little thing Paul did. Wouldve been more interesting if they'd continued to lean into his stern ruggedness and played that awe more straight, like conviction instead of exclaim. His casting was fine as the first film showed, I just think the way he was written, directed, and edited in the second one was a touch off.

@chrisjfox8715 totally agree with ya on Stilgar... Have you read any of the Dune books? I'm sort of cursed in my feelings about Dune 2 because I'm a huge fan of the books and have so much context for decisions Denis and his team did or didn't make. The Baron in Dune 1 was absolutely sinister. In Dune 2, he was an inconsequential character who had no real impact on the story and had a imo stupid death - exactly the same as Feyd-Rautha. Why do so well making the Harkonnens so vile in Dune 1 to just have them be superfluous in Dune 2? Thx for sharing your thoughts! Gonna go see Dune 2 again in the next week and hopefully some of your thoughts (and others commenting here) will resonate with me on the second viewing.
