The dub had one of the best lines in the entire franchise “pity is all I ever had for you” so freaking badass and one of the reasons Marcus is one of my favorite digimon protagonists

This show opened the gateway to the digital world for me. Marcus Knocking Out a champion-level Digimon in the first episode is still etched vividly in my mind. I'll forever love this series. Also, I didn't realise how young Thomas & Marcus were, I always imagined them being 17-19 like Yoshi

This season was my start to digimon. No matter what everyone says: This will always be the best digimon for me. And massive thanks to you for talking so positively about it.

Kurata is hands down one of best villains in Digimon and had one of the most satisfying defeats in any anime.

I really enjoyed this series! Older characters and more mature storytelling really helped up the stakes. It was also clearly obvious an attempt by the franchise to be aimed at Older fans who still watched and enjoyed the series.

Data Squad is my #2 series behind Tamers. OG and 02 were great, but both of these told a much better story.

What did Yoshi tell the royal knight when she went burst mode?! That line was sick asf! “Marcus went to get his dad back and he left us here to make sure there was a world to come back to when he gets back..” something like that then *burst mode*

Thank you for this video. When i was a kid my brothers and I used to rush into the second room with a tv at 8pm everyday to watch this show. A real bonding moment, and watching this bought back the memories while only dedicating 5 hours rather than 20.

Unfortunately this show never came to TV where I live, or if it did it I missed it. Seems like the type of season I would have enjoyed. One thing about Digimon that I truly appreciate now that I'm older is how unique each season was, and that they did bold things by changing each season.

If you minus the notolgia factor, I think Data Squad might be the best series. I don't trust my own biased opinion on anything in the "Adventure Series" bc of nostalgia, & Tamers too - to a certain extent. Everything beyond Tamers I have only caught up with in the last year or so. I thoroughly enjoyed Data Squad & will put it on for background noise when I'm gaming often (along with Raytaku's great retrospectives too), & will catch myself watching the series more than actually playing. Great show, awesome retrospective - know this had to take a ton of work!

Yeah, this was my first season of the franchise. Always watched an episode before school on Jetix.

I find it interesting how in this season digimon can't eat human food but for the past seasons that was never the case. it's one of the things I really enjoy about the Digimon anime. Each season puts their own twist on the lore without being weighted down by past seasons' continuity, with the exception of 02

I saw this season on German television and loved the show! Really don't understand why people are hating on this season. A little fun fact, I was raised in Austria, so I kinda found it funny that Thomas was Half Japanese and Half Austrian. The fact that our little country is known to the creators on Digimon was very surprising to me.

Marcus is my favorite protagonist because he would scrap without even needing to transform into a Digimon.

I never relly seen a single episode of Data Squad but it def feels very interesting. We have older protagonists now, even if Id prefer they up their ages to 16-17 since there's no way these boys are just 14 year olds (Thomas is a certified medical license holder too, it's less crazy to think hes at least 17-18 instead of a 14 med school graduate). While the first arc feels so very focused on Marcus (He gets his higher digivolutions first and oneshots most enemies despite being the supposed rookie of the team), Im glad we didnt end up to something like the two mains of Frontier that made everyone else useless chopped liver. I also appreciate theyre actually aware at how Yoshi doesnt seem to live up to her status as senior in a subtle way. Historically the girls, except Ruki, in Digimon never really get as good as the main boys. So making her backstory be about pressure and insecurity with the two younger boys doing so much better than her is actually amazing. It helps too she defs gets better and much more competent later on, being on mostly equal footing with everyone. Also Lalamon despite her soft design is hilariously sassy. I also appreciate all the main heroes reached mega level and beyond. As well as the supporting characters actually giving off substantial contribution and not just be useless npcs xD. Tamers also had adults who were active in the plot but its only here where said adults fight along with partner digimon so far. I do feel the second to last arc went on for too long. Or well mightve been better if they didnt introduce Kurata as the main big bad so early. It would feel more interesting if he was in the shadows or he kept up the act much longer. Knowing everything is his fault so early on kinda erases mystery. Watching the slimeball actively work and scheme for a long span of the show also makes him more annoying in a bad way. He's a menace and his ultimate comeuppance is made really sweet yes but less is definitely more and the audience wont get bored and annoyed as quickly. Due to Kurata's arc going on for so long too, it makes King Drasil a last minute plot arc. It helped he's mentioned a few times earlier but now it inevitably gets compated to Kurata's arc and King Drasil's arc isnt as good because things feel less intense, as well as full of questions we will probably never get an answer to. Also yea, so he managed to bring Spencer back to life as thanks. But what about BanchoLeomon??? Is he at least turned back into an egg? We already had a sacrificial Leomon in the earlier arc. Do we really need two? Kinda sucky to save just one life from that merged being 8I. There's also some issues I have concerning Thomas' betrayal. While the double cross was excellent on Thomas' part it wouldve been better if its earlier or Thomas hinted enough to Marcus or Yoshi to make him realize he's being blackmailed and they need to put on a bit of a show first. Letting it go like this makes it feel like the friendship and development werent that strong from the get go. Also self destructing tears? With how Marcus deals with everything, I was expecting he trying to wrangle with Shine Greymon himself so he calms down. All in all though, I think the story is mostly good, especially when viewed by now adults. THe next series, def never seen them but will still wanna hear your summary and thoughts bout it xD.

Gallantmon's attack names in Data Squad's dub are actually the orginal Japanese names of the attacks. Still not sure why they went back to them, but I ain't complaining.

This series is why I love digimon. They have never told a story like this again since.

I think Data Squad, Ghost Game might be the few series I know nothing about. Most others I caught a bit of them on TV. Season sounded cool so happy to have learned about it.

This season was good, but there are some things I didn’t like: 1. Why have Lalamon’s mega form be Rosemon instead of Lotusmon? We’ve all been waiting for Mimi’s Palmon to become Rosemon 2. Weird Digivolutions, Drimogemon to Digmon and Elecmon to BlackGarurumon? 3. Changing BomberNanimon to Citramon in the dub. This one I had a real problem with. 4. Gender swapped Digimon. Biyomon as male and Frigimon as a female? If they wanted to give Keenan a Digimon mom couldn’t they have gone with a Lillymon? 5. UlforceVeedramon’s less than epic debut and debuting before Veedramon. I’ve always they would bring back the second season team for a storyline based on the V-Tamer manga so Veemon could unlock his Veedramon line. Which if you think about it made more sense than his anime ones. They should’ve just excluded UlforceVeedramon from this Royal Knights line up. 6. Changing Crusadermon who appeared in the previous season to LoadKnightmon. Whose dumb idea was that? I’ll add more to this later when I have the chance.

I love Savers as it gave me my favorite Agumon line but I don't think I can ever watch it dubbed. What was so wrong with calling it Digisoul?

So far, Savers/ Data Squad is one of the better seasons as well as one of the better dubs, imo. The cast was interesting and got almost an equal amount of time, and I do like how Masaru's gimmick/ street fighting skills are used for Agumon's evolutions. I can't wait for your reviews for the other seasons, especially Xros Wars and Ghost Game. Though, for the former, I highly to see the season in the original JP dub/ Eng sub for full context.

This season was my first introduction to the anime as a child (i saw a children's book of the first season in a book fair) and i absolutely loved it. I saw the rest as a teen and i was very much like "this is fantastic, but i like this." As an adult tho, i like tamers the best cuz i find psychological horror(?) delicious

Data Squad is defiantly the most unique in the Digimon franchise not only did they use older characters, but they made the enemies and danger much more serious and darker compared to the past series. The character I consider to be my favorite is Keanan he had such amazing character development going from a dangerous member of the enemies to a proud member of the team was perfect.

Data Squad was not bad at all, because I felt it was one of the Digimon stories that balanced character development really well. Once more highlighting how a cast of three protags plus one more joining in later is a lot better and easier to handle than a cast of five or more.

I will 100% recommend watching the Japanese version of this series. It has the same pacing issues but tone is much better

you know i do wonder whether people criticise marcus decision to leave home and family for the digital world but to me working with the data squad and fighting the digimon i feel like he found his calling something he loved to do and he didn't want to give it up and he loves agumon i feel like while thomas and yoshi liked working at data squad the had other things too fall back on and with kennan im glad he stayed on earth i don't think its fair to put his parents through that again but again this is just my opinion i do wonder if the ending should of been them reuniting with their after awhile thats my headcannon anyway that one day they got back what do you think of my observation sorry this is long

I was a teenager as this english dub aired at the time. I enjoyed the way the story played out, which got me interested in the rest of the earlier Digimon anime later on and trying out the games like the Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition. I don't really understand how the fandom is split on opinion of this anime. Maybe it was ahead of it's time while relating to older fans who have learned some mature content. Of course, you can't please everyone.

Data Squad felt like a Show that was perfectly made for toonami

I know they were the most disliked series as they came out but Frontier and Data Squad will always be my favorites. They weren't my start on Digimon I watched the originals, missed tamers before watching it later, and still these two despite mosts take on them are my favorite because the humans actually do something major in the fights from the start to the end, which was always my biggest problem with the others. I love Marcus fighting the Digimon because he refuses to just sit around and watch Agumon fight and that it's literally the only way for him to digivolve so there's a lore reason for it anyway. I love the more serious tone and I really like the antagonists and just the entire series and Lalamon is like my favorite rookie for no real reason I just like it. While I did miss the digimon partners in Frontier; becoming digimon was a really good idea, if it was fusing with a partner I think the series would have been way more popular and it's always sad to me that it didn't get the love it could have, but that's not connected to this video and I just didn't think about commenting on the frontier video.

Also, this season has my second favorite Digivice (gotta give it up to the tamer's digivice)

Another line changed in the english version. During the Pre-Burst Mode Talk the German/Japanese Version doesnt state that Power is the combination of them but "Power is not something u can simply lend one another. Its something we both give and recieve equally" (at least thats the closest Translation i can make). While the english line is great i prefer that orignal since it puts more empathise supporting eachother on equal ground being partners instead of just combining their powers. A minor difference though, the scene still kicks ass. Also Bantyoleomons Dialog was slightly changes. The Original: "Now u really achived something amazing Marcus Damon - and you too Shinegreymon! Within urself u became one, u have surpassed the strongest Digisoul by far. U have developed the absolut power that goes even beyond the Mega Level. Welcome to the next Level, welcome to the burst mode" It does hype it more up, though the english version is more about Marcus having failed before in reaching the Burst Mode and now finally executing it correctly. Both versions work great but nostlagia bias makes me like the german version more.

Data Squad is my second favorite season. I always felt that Masaru/Marcus should have had the beta design of flamemon as his partner, instead of agumon. Especially with the reveal of his family it would have made so much sense. It would canonized the beta flamemon. He’s such a cool protagonist. Another reason why this season is goated because you get to keep your Digimon into old age which is why I like it. Also masaru/marcus has the best greymon evos hands down. Also his hands rated E for Everyone.

The thing about Savers/Data Squad is: Do you really expect the Adventure crew (OG and 02) to possibly handle someone as crazy and insane as Kurata? That man outplayed the government, managed to make a Digimon that can outright delete them, and got Yygdrasil to act up! Personally, those kids would have fallen apart.

It’s actually one of my favorites though, with Tamers being probably the only season to actually beat it (Ghost Game may have as well) Small Edit: I forgot about Kurata for the longest time. I remembered his face and hating him, but not why. Now I do. And he is absolutely SLUDGE, not even worthy of being scraped off the bottom of my shoe. I dont think I’ve ever hated an antagonist so much in ANY media I’ve read or watched EVER.

You know while Data squad isn't the best Digimon series and I can agree it doesn't do a lot of things very well but I can never call this a bad show. It can be dumb, very dumb in fact but that's one of the things I adore about it, Marcus is easily one of my favorite characters, he sees things like gods, demons, man made eldritch horrors...and his first thought is to go unga bunga and deck them in the face like that's funny and you can't convince me otherwise. This will always be a solid number 3 on my list of favorite Digimon shows. A bronze medal isn't a bad prize if you ask me.
