I got a Digitakt this week and have only had a few hours to play with it between working and whatnot. I was really intimidated at first, but honestly everything is pretty laid out right in front of you. It's got a nice workflow and there's been more than a few times where I've said "it would be cool if it did this" then I try it out and the Digitakt actually does it. You can tell they put a lot of time and trial/error into the interface design. If you're someone reading this and your on the fence - Just buy it. If an idiot like me can figure it out, so can you.

From what I understand Elektron started as a school project. I always wanted to know how they got the idea for their workflow. Very unique. I wish they made a mini documentary and tour of their headquarters to show how it all started. Because out of all the hardware out there, it is so different.

Thanks for another great video! Finding these really helpful since I got my digitakt. What a beast. It's such a new world. So much more advanced than other machines I've had. And yet compact and not convoluted. I love your style, you're very fun and friendly. The only limitation that the Digitakt has that I think would increase its usability greatly to add is stereo samples. Even without I'm gonna keep using it and getting better with it. But I do think it would open doors.

I would be very happy about a level indicator when sampling. Which shows me the optimal level when sampling without having to normalize it later. Also a function that allows me to get out of the DT, into for example a preamp followed by a comp back into the input of the DK. Then you should be able to mute the master and just listen to the input while the DT is playing its tracks, that would be great.

I already have a tr-8s and would want a good sampler to go with my setup. Should I go with Digitakt or Octatrack or Sp-404 or something else?
@soffter
@soffter Жыл бұрын
i would probably recommend the 404 if you already have the 8S ! the 404 has all those effects and is a lot more open ended of a sampler which might be a good pairing with the sequencer and performability of the TR-8S Octatrack is great but there's a steep learning curve and compared to the 404 these days... it's a lot more neck and neck if you ask me - and workflow is KEY ! !

No lie. Elektron's desgign reminds me of something from Ridley Scott's Alien, and Alien isolation. The nostromo had a similar vibe. Very modern, very mechanical. If you look at photos of Alien Isolation, you will understand. The Digitakt and model samples looks like a medical device you would find on a space ship. Weird, I know. But still cool.
@ukbloke28
@ukbloke28 7 ай бұрын
I like that comparison. There are curiously retro aspects like the mono display and the simple boxy geometry but then it also feels futuristic. I love retro futurism, what people thought was futuristic in the past.
@nomad1517
@nomad1517 7 ай бұрын
@@ukbloke28 It has a very clean, and playful aesthetic to it. It looks like something used for a science experiment or a toy to teach children how to learn. Probably because the designer was a huge fan of Nintendo and trackers. That explains the pictures of dice, wrenches, etc. One thing that made Alien so realistic as far as the design goes, was it was designed by the same guy who did the millennium falcon. They used real parts of bomber planes, and real computer monitors, etc. They wanted it to feel real. The uniforms were inspired by the skylab crew from NASA. But yeah. Elektron has that fun retro style. I hope that evolves into more interesting designs in the near future.
@ukbloke28

@@nomad1517 That's true. I had a Japanese electronic kit when I was a kit called Gakken EX-150. it wasnt the same visually but it did have that same combination of technical with toylike. I think these devices are - or should prob always be - designed to appeal to the inner child! Toys for big people.

Very good video. I have a question; i have synths. Minilougu xd for example. Can i record a whole song into Digitakt with drums and samples from DT and pads and other stuff from external synths?
@Hakucho64
@Hakucho64 8 ай бұрын
You couldn't sample the audio of an entire song into the DT because it doesn't support such long samples (unlike the SP404 MkII, for example). You could plug the synth's audio into the DT's input (one stereo or two monos), mix it with the DT's audio using the DT's inbuilt mixer, then send the mixed output of the DT to a recorder like a Tascam, etc.

I have a Digitakt question, is there a way to reset an encoder after you tweaked it right back to its original value before you moved it. Kinda of like a back (pad menu) button on the model cycles? Aside from temp save? I know you can hit FUNC and fine tune but is there a way to reset it? I hope I’m explaining myself correctly. TIA
@soffter
@soffter Жыл бұрын
so i'm not sure if you can do it for a SINGLE encoder, but if you do a temp save and then hold the page you're on, and hit NO while holding the page button, it'll reset to the state that it was at when you did a temp save - so kinda ? It's like reloading JUST the page, to the temp save state, I just played around with it and i cant see a way it would work for a SINGLE encoder, but that's about as close as i can get

@hollywood4834
@hollywood4834 Жыл бұрын
Yup, it’s a proper sampler so you can do a whole lot of things. You might need a preamp or mixer to get a mic signal in, but you can record it wherever and import it too, plenty options.
@Hakucho64
@Hakucho64 8 ай бұрын
Yeah a mic by itself isn't enough, the DT expects a line level signal. I just use my Tascam DR-05X (which I usually use to record my tracks) as a mic; simply plug its output into the DT's input and arm the DT-05X for recording; the DT-05X then acts as a mic plus preamp.

The complexity is all under the surface of a clean and stupidly easy to use sequencer. Simple use but complexities bundled under the hood incredibly efficiently. Most functions of the digitakt I did not need a manual to immediately work with effectively.
