Another great video! So lucky you were able to procure a 600MHz CPU! Quick question, where does one go about getting the "OpenGL EV56 tech demo" you played around with near the end of the video? That's a pretty slick little OpenGL demo!

Well I have never made it public really because there is very little if any demand for alpha software and I just wrote it to learn to program some OpenGL for fun. I uploaded my demos for Alpha and x86 plus the source here to dropbox now. Plus there is a support directory with the libs, dll and header file if you want to compile glut/opengl stuff in VC6++ yourself. I also compiled glut for alpha because the demos uses that but the glut dll is included in every demo so should run with just that. Thats how I got the glut dll etc and there is a ton of demos included with glut by kronos there so uploaded that to. The EV56 demo is not that well optimized because I cant program very well. The Steam engine demo has no textures but its more optimized for lower cpu usage but uses a LOT more polygons so dont expect any high frame rates, was written more for GeForce 256 cards in mind, its high on polygons. But it runs. Here is the link. www.dropbox.com/sh/w2i18kwg31wjudx/AADF1ByHLiyZYMOPsgdi87pia?dl=0 Use my demos at your own risk.

@ Thanks for sharing. Do you have vc++6 for alpha? I had a hard time finding it last time I looked

@@Douglasvj ftp.braindrainlan.nu/RISC%20Windows%20NT/ ntrisc.zip contains one version. ftp.braindrainlan.nu/RISC%20Windows%20NT/Alpha/ there is also one version in there. I think they are from Internet Archive but they removed them unknown reasons.

Have you even thought of having ZORIN Linux or GhostBSD (Open UNIX) installed on that system might have been more in keeping with what DEC had in mind, I myself have Linux Mint CINNAMON 19.3 (Tricia) 64bit edition and enjoy programming in AT&T Assembler (Gas), the drives are listed as SCSI drives but show up as /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 and my data drive shows up as /dev/sdb1

It ran gentoo back in 2006 to 2007 and was a file server. Then it was reinstalled with Gentoo in 2014 and made in to a workstation again BUT it always had issues with heavy CPU load causing crash to SRM console. Did a PSU secondary side recap and a motherboard recap, seems to have improved stability but never got it fully stable, Linux complained about cache errors. Got a new CPU to see if cache errors went away and thats why its upgraded from 500 to 600Mhz, made no difference, also external cache was removed for testing, no difference. I cant tell if its hardware or software thats is the issue and the Cache errors went away at some point and I cant reproduce them anymore. So for easy use I tested Windows NT 4.0 and it runs very stable, for the most parts so I decided to keep it like this. Its less maintenance on the software side but it is very limiting in the software it can run but I have ported over latest Quake 3.21 (official is 3.17 and has bugs that later version fixes). I also wrote a AQ2 client and ported that to both x86 for windows 9x and for Dec Alpha for Windows NT 4.0. So it has it uses now as it is. I also ported over OpenGL quake, there is a port using SDL but its software and no sound. But I suck at programing so I cant figure out Why I get no textures rendered in Quake 1, there is some bug so its all rendered with no texturs so gray polygons are rendered but it runs fine and sound works and it even connects to our server. If ever learn to program to a useful extent I hop to fix that problem.

@ Strange with Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista it was the other way round so once I moves to Linux the problems went away so I find that strange and that time I was running UBUNTU 12.04LTS on an AMD PHENOM II X3 Stepping 3 with an ASUSTEK EN9500GT now I have moved on to a AMD A10-7800k powered machine with 16GiB of RAM and no problems.

@@DAVIDGREGORYKERR Well you cant compare Alpha architecture to x86. There are few distros supporting Alpha processors nowadays, gentoo is one of the few but its pretty buggy to get running nowadays. I run Linux as my main OS for 20 years. Also the last Windows version for Alpha was Windows 2000 Release Candidates. Alpha was declared dead in early 2000 and I think the last machines where sold in 2006 or something and supported to 2009. Its a big difference running modern Linux on it and comparing it to old windows, one could run old linux dist from the era to tough, might work better but then your stuck with old linux software to. Like I sad Idk if it has hardware or software issues but running NT 4.0 makes it a usable machine for retro and I tried to make a reasonably modern gentoo install work for 5 years but it never got stable.

@@DAVIDGREGORYKERR No need to be sorry for anything. I just tried to explain what I have tested and what worked and what did not work. Nothing sees NT 4.0 is the more overall stable OS and its not my first pick. It ran Gentoo linux in 2006-2007 but Gentoo Linux changed a lot until I tested it in 2014 again. I just knows the machine has issues with stability and if thats software or hardware idk, Its super hard to find parts to even begin to test that. So the remaining options would be to try and old version of linux or Windows Nt 4.0 or 2000. The last option would be to have it sitting there unused. I tested NT 4.0 and it seems to be stable so I ran with it. Thats all. And if you have more questions feel free to ask, not everything is in that video because I had the machine since 2006.
