Ive been a professional photographer for 11 years now, but i still find these videos interesting and helpful. Even if i know many of the things taught, there is often some little nugget of info or something being done in a way i wouldn't have thought of. Most of all though, i like the friendliness of the your teaching Mark. There are a lot of photographers who have a feeling of superiority, but you have a very humble approach and you meet people right where they are, however basic that might be (eg you explaining what a lens hood is). That is how photography should be, it's a fun thing to get into. Your videos are by far the best i have seen anywhere. They are informative, pleasant to watch and you get to the point, whilst making the whole thing fun. You also teach on all levels which is great. I really appreciate your efforts!

Mark used a 42-inch reflector here. Which size you choose depends a lot on how much area you are covering, distance, and lighting conditions but 42 inches is a good starting point for general use.

You're welcome, Adam! Off-camera flash photography (especially wireless, which is available for most modern DSLRs) adds a great amount of creative flexibility and allows you to direct and shape the light from your flash. Please feel free to visit the Adorama Learning Center (adorama(dot)com/learn) and you'll find dozens of articles about off-camera flash technique.

If you look closely at the photos using the reflector you will see a very unnatural catch light at the bottom of the eyes. The proper way to use the reflector is to raise it above your head this way the direction of light is more natural looking. This also repositions the catch lights near the top of the eyes.

Yea, besides, many professional photographers shoot in Av and for good reason too. Being in Av mode offers you a lot of control without much setup time. You can always still adjust your exposure compensation with a spin of the dial to adjust what you're getting. This way of working gives you the best balance of control and speed. Always being in manual mode can unnecessarily take up a lot of valuable time, eg events or photojournalism. This coming from someone that uses primarily 1970's slrs!!

But he made the choice of Av to get quick results that he wants, in that he wanted to shoot at a wide stop for shallow dof. Av grants control over everything but shutterspeed, which is inconsequential in that environment. Again, if he wants to under or overexpose whatever his meter suggests, you can adjust this with exposure compensation easily. You'll see how wise it is to do this when you really understand what it is you want in a situation and how the camera can do that for you "asap".

Some of you seem to think that using M for "Manual" is like using P for "Professional", lol. Just because Mark is in Av mode it doesn't mean it`s wrong. Why buy a supercar if you`re not going to use all of its power now and again? I used to shoot in manual all the time until recently, if you can do it that`s great, but why not let the camera do some of the work if you don't need to shoot manual? Think about it.

You have to hold the reflector high ,over the head
@trevordaviesphotography9335

I do sometimes wonder why people point the reflectors up, uplighting the subject... Get the assistant to hold the reflector high pointing down to the subject, making the reflected light look ALOT more natural... ALOT of photographers make this mistake. ( Probably because they are teaching the use of defectors wrong. )
@tommyspongefinger
@tommyspongefinger 10 жыл бұрын
You point them up to remove harsh shadows from under the chin and nose and to remove any shadows falling onto the eyes....its just clamshell lighting using the sun.
@trevordaviesphotography9335
@trevordaviesphotography9335 10 жыл бұрын
Not when the subject has their back to the sun like they do in this video... you effectively uplight the subject... If the keylight is in front of the subject, yes this method applies.. but not when the only key light ( in this case the sun ) is BEHIND the subject...
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 8 жыл бұрын
+tommyspongefinger No, you almost never point it upwards with natural light. You will always get that uplighting horror effect, even if it is to a lesser extent, even if the sun provides the key light from above. The reflector should almost always be lifted eye level or higher and feathered for desired coverage. It's way more natural and flattering than the uplighting people erroneously learn when starting out with reflectors.
@HotnessTim
@HotnessTim 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Bodden Nope, you're very much wrong about fill lighting. A reflector used as a fill light can be below with no ill effect, as the main light strength is coming from above and the job of fill lights are to gently fill in shadows where the key light was obscured by geometry (and a key light from high above is going to leave the most shadows on downward sides.) It is only nebulous if the low direction reflector was used to overpower the key light. In direct sunlight, that white reflector is not reflecting 100% of the light towards her face, so the key light (the sun) will dominate from above even if the fill is below.
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 8 жыл бұрын
+HotnessTim Lol. Very much wrong eh? Well, bud, I use reflectors all the time. I'm quite versed as to how each side of a 5-in-1 works. I know what looks good to me. In most cases the horror lighting is not a good look in my opinion, and that's what a lot of people end up doing. Even a few other people noticed that here. It's not just me (not that that makes any difference to me). I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. And what you said isn't totally right. If I were to go by that I'd have horror lighting on my subjects constantly, even if the fill doesn't overpower. It would just be less stark but it'd be horror lighting all the same. When using reflectors, there's a certain amount of angling upwards. 99% of the time to get a beautiful look, it's my personal taste that I won't generally uplight from below but I'd have the reflector at generally around face height or higher. Then I'd angle it to "scoop" up the natural light and feather it across my subject until I get what I want. The only times I'd ever use total uplighting is when something is blocking off the light from above or when the horror lighting is done on purpose for effect (which I pretty much hardly ever do, if at all). Very few instances apart from those I'd use that uplighting. Other than that, no. But thanks, though lol.
