In 1977, college graduates Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) share a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York, during which they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends. Ten years later, Harry and Sally meet again at a bookstore, and in the company of their respective best friends, Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher), attempt to stay friends without sex becoming an issue between them.

I read an article recently that said movies today are either superhero movies or REALLY dark, heavy, indie films. I don't understand why nobody makes a well-written, well-acted movie with a unique plot that's fun to watch.

I wondered that, too. Maybe bc it's difficult? Or bc it's something that doesn't draw people into cinemas, doesn't make enough money? There are some great french ones. But it's really rare.

Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner wrote the screenplay for When Harry met Sally. She wrote and/or co-wrote Sleepless in Seattle, You've got Mail, Silkwood, Heartburn, Julie & Julia....She was a great writer.

I was so happy to see you react to this! If you want to see another kind of similar style of movie with Billy, you should check out Forget Paris. Another good one is America's Sweethearts. He also has a brief but unforgettable appearance in The Princess Bride! And for more Meg, a definite must-watch is Joe vs the Volcano (also staring Tom Hanks), French Kiss (one of my favorites), You've Got Mail, and of course, Sleepless in Seattle. ~Caroline

So, the couples that are featured throughout the movie that tell their love stories are real stories, but portrayed by actors. If memory serves, Nora Ephron (R.I.P.) who wrote for magazines and other publications before becoming a screenwriter did an article in a New York publication that featured these love stories from real people and she thought it would be a nice theme to run through the movie.

What a terrific reaction. Your reactions are always awesome. This is my favorite romance comedy. I saw it a few months ago for the first time and I have watched every reaction to it. I did not expect it to be so well written and funny but my apology to Rob Reiner from the TV sitcom "All In the Family". His father produced many TV shows and movies; a lot of talent in that Family. It was fun from beginning to end watching you react to this movie; you should react to more romance comedies!

Just so you know no one ever carried a Roladex around (maybe old people😉), even when I was ten it was all about the Filofax (couldn't go anywhere without a page-a-day diary, conversion chart, contacts, somewhere to keep credit cards and a tiny fold out map of the world) oh, to be 10 again!😂
@hollytooker507

No one carried Rolodexes around like that. Which it is why it was funny. Yes, Reiner consulted with the late great writer Nora Ephron. Please watch YOU’VE GOT MAIL (also set in NY with a change of seasons) which she also directed. (Sleepless in Seattle too). Meg Ryan suggested acting out the orgasm. Billy Crystal suggested “I’ll have what she’s having” delivered by Estelle Reiner, Rob’s mother. I read the old couples are actors but the words are from real people.

Speaking of getting a ride with a stranger -- There was a ride board in one of the lobbies at my college (in the early 1970's) where people driving somewhere would leave little cardboard slips with their name, phone number and destination. When I needed to get from Boston to visit my relatives in upstate New York I'd check the board, call a stranger and arrange for them to pick me up at my dorm. Seems crazy now.

"I'll have what she's having." Fun Fact: Joe is played by Steven Ford, the son of 38th U.S. President Gerald Ford. Hot Take Fact: The scene where we see all four lead characters talking to each other individually on various telephones took sixty takes to nail. NFL Enthusiast Fact: The footage from the football game was the New York Giants vs Detroit Lions from October 16, 1988. The New York Giants won 30-10. Location Location Fact: The orgasm scene was filmed at Katz's Deli, an actual restaurant on New York's E. Houston Street. The table at which the scene was filmed now has a "Where Harry Met Sally ...Hope You Have What She Had!" plaque. That's Hot Fact: For the infamous fake orgasm scene, the original script called for Harry and Sally to merely talk about women faking an orgasm, until Meg Ryan suggested that Sally actually fake an orgasm at the table. Director Rob Reiner loved the idea and put it into the script. In a November 2, 2004 interview with NPR, writer Nora Ephron credited Meg Ryan not only with the idea of faking an orgasm in the famous restaurant scene, but also with the idea of setting it in a restaurant in the first place.
